That's wonderful! I unfortunately didn't see my Grandma using her treadle because she kept it in her bedroom, but I remember seeing it and being curious about how it worked. I love having it now - so much I have 2!
Awesome! I have a new Janome treadle machine to share, but they are so backordered right now it's not high on my list. Clearly treadling is as popular as ever!
Love that you showed using your 27. I would have never thought to use a modern walking foot on a treadle machine. This is a whole new game changer. Thank you!
Yep! Most Singer treadles are low shank machines so you can put modern feet on them. All of the feet in this set work with this machine: leahday.com/products/eversewn-deluxe-quilting-foot-set
@@LeahDay that's fantastic. My 3 domestics are all low shanks. I have every one of these feet already. My new belt came yrsterday. I'm itching to start learning on my 27.
Thanks for the inset showing your feet working the treadle. I remember using a treadle machine many years ago when I was a teenager. Don't think I'll ever seek one out for myself but I really enjoy seeing you using it. I agree. This is a great design for our fourth block.
You're welcome! I set up my little go pro on the floor and it's a bit tricky to find a good spot, but I think it's important to show how my feet are moving. I love this treadle base better than my other because the wheel is much bigger which means more stitches for every treadle!
Leah you hit on something that has been on my mind re: machine quilting....Most of the quilts in shows I've attended have benn 'quilted" using the latest computer-ized long arm machines...Many times the quilting pattern that the quilter chose for the quilt...seemed to conflict with the design that was inherent in the quilt BEFORE being quilted....I admire your choice of simplicity in choosing how you would "quilt" the "complex" beautiful quilt you have pieced!. Oh yes the quilts made on those super new long arms are flat as a pancake ...not soft at all ...not my favorite...they're more like wall hangings.
Personally I view it all as relevant and pretty. I have multiple longarms and computerized quilting myself, in addition to two treadles. There is no right or wrong, just whatever you're interested in playing with!
I was excited to see a walking foot on a Singer treadle, but my Singer treadle is a red eye back-clamper. I wonder if there is a walking foot for that model? My machine was born in 1910 and used to be my grandmother's. I'm still in the process of getting it to run smoothly. I used to make a lot of clothing on this machine, back when I was first learning to sew. I always relied on my uncle to keep it running smoothly!
Great question! I just ran across an article about this here: oldsingersewingmachineblog.com/2012/11/04/the-back-clamp-singer-66-mystery/ The bad news is you have a back clamping 66 which will be hard to find feet for. The GOOD news is you should be able to get an adapter for it to switch it over to a side clamping system, then you MIGHT be able to use standard presser feet. I say MIGHT because that's a bit fiddly to guarantee! You never know how the adapter will change things and a walking foot is a pretty clunky foot. So my best advice is to give it a go, see if you can find an adapter, see if you can use regular low shank presser feet, then go from there.
I am lost with Quilting this block I think I’m going to do what you did Leah. I think it looks good. I will hopefully mark my quilt top tomorrow or the next day, I have some appointments tomorrow and may not get to it until Friday.I’m not sure if I’m going to use masking tape. Or just use the icacord thread fmq? just wait until I use my new thread for free motion quilting? will use the masking tape or the pen set I purchased from-you, Love them. I see they come with Refill lead and a eraser. Is there anyway you can purchase those separately? Or do you have to just buy the whole set of pens again? thinking about using the new icacore thread but I’m not sure on the color if I should just match the background color ( that’s what I have been using. I guess it would be OK to use it with my walking foot?it doesn’t have to match to a “t does it? I want to try it out the new thread set. Is it something you generally use when you’re doing free motion quilting or can you do it with the walking foot? Thank you so much Leah you’re the best
You can use Isacord for any type of quilting and I'm using the gray color that doesn't really blend in, but it also doesn't really stand out. I think it's best to contrast more than match so you can see what you're doing. Don't over think it! Just remember this is fun!
You mentioned the upper tensioner "release" being the tab on the tensioner rather than being connected to the presser foot take up lever. I know that on Early singer VS machines ..the tab was the design...I have a couple of Singer 27's and that's the case...I also own a Singer 127...the new improved version of the 27 ..that Singer brought out around 1910/1911 and in these newer models he connected the upper tension release to the presser foot take up lever.
I’m a new quilter using a vintage Kenmore. I’m still quilting straight lines using a walking foot (no fmq yet). I have trouble with the top pleating at intersections like you mentioned in this video. No matter what I do it still pleats about every other intersection. I use polyester batting from Walmart. Do you think that’s the reason?
This sounds like an issue with basting, but yes, I have had issues with pleating caused by very fluffy batting. Try switching to another batting and see if it continues to rule that out.
What walking foot did you use on this machine please? Thanks. Love it. My grandmother taught me at age 5 to sew on a Singer Treadle machine. 63 years ago--seems like yesterday sometimes.
I used to do that, but then I realized it's really dependent on the batting in the middle that determines how much shifting you will get. With this Quilters Dream Midnight batting, I can quilt across from corner to corner and haven't had any issues. I couldn't do this with wool!
Yes, when quilting with it on a home machine. I found it's not quite as necessary when quilting on a longarm because you can load it on the machine with the non-stretchy side running perpendicular to the rails. On a home machine, it really helps to have the french fuse secured to the wrong side to limit the stretch of this material.
Thanks Leah. I did the marvelous mosaic quilt with your quilt along and used minky/cuddle fabric for the backing. I loved it. So i am finally starting to quilt the first friendship block and want to continue with it. It’s interesting but even if you quilt a lot, the cuddle backing still stays quite soft.
I already had it in my stash because it's the same foot I use on my Eversewn Sparrow 20. You can find it here: leahday.com/products/eversewn-deluxe-quilting-foot-set
Love the treadle, love the quilt too!
I love using my treadle. It takes me back to the memories of my grand mother teaching me to sew.
That's wonderful! I unfortunately didn't see my Grandma using her treadle because she kept it in her bedroom, but I remember seeing it and being curious about how it worked. I love having it now - so much I have 2!
I love when you treadle sew!!! You are Amazing!!! Thank you for sharing! I just had to subscribe!

Love watching you quilt on the treadle.
Thank you Jennie! I really enjoy these videos!
What fun! Thanks for sharing. I am really liking this QAL. 👍😍
I'm so happy to hear this!
Wow my grandmother used a treadle machine, it's been so long since I've seen one in action. Great video!
Thank you Dawn! This was fun!
I like the quilting a lot!! Great idea, it really compliments the piece work.
I agree! My longarm design was more complicated and I honestly didn't like it as much. Sometimes simpler is better!
Love it Leah 💕And so much different to an electric Sewing Machine, Glenn in Australia
Thank you Glenn! Yes, indeed!

Good to know! The ones I have didn't have this function.

I'm using the walking foot from this deluxe foot set: leahday.com/products/eversewn-deluxe-quilting-foot-set
I would have thought to make the first lines in the center working out? Also, where to find the skinny blue tape?
I used to do that, but then I realized it's really dependent on the batting in the middle that determines how much shifting you will get. With this Quilters Dream Midnight batting, I can quilt across from corner to corner and haven't had any issues. I couldn't do this with wool!
Leah do you still recommend using a fusible interfacing if you are quilting with minky?
Yes, when quilting with it on a home machine. I found it's not quite as necessary when quilting on a longarm because you can load it on the machine with the non-stretchy side running perpendicular to the rails.
