If you can find packing cling film rolls that are an inch or two wide, that has been the best. Could use the velcro, if it's a larger and heavier plant, for inital support. Then use the film around aerial root nodes to secure plant further, increase humidity for faster growth, and encourage roots to grow into pole.

Great minds think alike? I did the same this summer only I had some black plastic fence. Put the fence down and then I used pvc pipe for the inside. It comes in 8 ft lengths and cut it down to 5 ft. Then wrapped it with moss and fence. The pcv is really sturdy and will not rot plus you can make some really tall ones. If you want to add on just melt the ends of pvc with a heat gun to add more height.

But I'm afraid by watering the poles the water gets into the soil/growing medium as well, which will cause root rot eventually. The poles need to be watered much frequent then the plants. How do you water _just_ the pole, instead of watering both the pole and the plant? Sorry, if this sounds silly but I'm really struggling with it right now. And also the fungus gnats...
