The most memorable TV show of my youth. I'm sad to see her go, as if she were a beloved aunt. Great actress and a good person. Bye Jean, and thank you.
She could have been cast in a high-profile role as an intellectual, perhaps a scientist and/or an academic. She was so good in everything she did. I loved how she sang in "Funny Girl," "When a girl isn't pretty like a Miss Atlantic City..." She was also good playing Sante Kimes victim (played by Mary Tyler Moore) in a very creepy TV movie about a famous and bizarre murder case.
Also loved Ms. Stapleton in the 1982 movie where she played Eleanor Roosevelt. She really captured her so well......I can understand she wanted to spread her wings and get away from Edith Bunker.
Definitely one of the most beloved characters in TV history, and quite clearly a very well spoken, intelligent person off camera. Jean will be greatly missed, but at least she's finally able to see her sister, Maureen again.
Jean Stapleton created one of the most beloved characters (Edith Bunker) of 20th century sit-com drama--in probably the best sit-com drama of all time--All In The Family. And there WAS drama in addition to the humor, often episodes with tear jerking realizm. My wife and I still watch the re-runs. Fantastic show!
Stapleton's acting has been as responsible for advancing the American agenda as those of us who marched, sat in, protested and resisted. Of course she was not alone--Lear, O'Connor, Reiner--all should take a proverbial bow and credit for the ability of our nation to overcome racism, sexism and a heap of other ills. Humor, truth, compassion, all powerful tools. Kudos to All In the Family for the years of professionalism and even managing to enjoy themselves in the process.
Jean Stapleton is one marvellous woman...intelligent, talented and just lovely. I was extremely lucky to see her perform on stage and I was mesmerised by her performance. There will never be another All in the Family, the cast, the writing and direction was spot on.
Gee our old LaSalle ran great...THoooooose were the Daaaaaysss....I knew those were the lyrics from the first time I seen the show...although it does sound like Gee I love those sour grapes. awww I sang along with it every week, and now my son's and I sing along to it every nite ..I miss those days...keeping it All in the Family ...they were the best together..RIP Carroll... And hello to Jean if she ever reads this stuff...I wish she would know how much we love her
I and my Wife watch All in the Family every night from bed as we record every episode and it is as fresh as in the 1970s.. It will be the same 50 years from now !! Herb
She did a play in Toronto years ago and I met her, she was ok, but yelled at a guy for taking a picture without asking her. She can be nasty if she wants to be, but a great actress. I remember when Edith died too very well and it was emotional, all these characters on All in the Family seemed like real people. I can still watch the show today and relate with these characters.
what an amazing person - watching All in the Family - she IS EDITH in such a convincing way - that seeing her here make me not believe it's Jean Stapleton - I guess that is a compliment for an incredible talented actress.... wow
@rafflesia Apparently too many people thought it was "Gee, I love those sour grapes." That's why in later seasons, they sing that line in a very drawn out, overexaggerated way so that the words are clear.
I grew up on this show. I watch it recorded now. I think it set the stage for further controversial "observational" humor - like Seinfeld, and Curb. Truly a classic, a view changer. I will enjoy this even in 20 years from now, as human mental evolution takes a slow pace, and all those issues, even over a different background, are just as relevant today. Well done :)
Things seem to often work out for the best in TV with actors somehow. Edith was a part no one could have played but Jean and in Murder she wrote, it was just not a Jean role so Angelia got it and took it to the heights Jean to Edith to in that show. I know, Jean would rather be remembered as an actor than just Edith but I'm sure she understood and is okay with the fact that most of us will remember her as Edith. It was a show before my time yet it seems just as relevant today as it obviously was at that time because we have similar problems today and for the new civil rights movement which I think is the LGBT instead of the one for women and black people, there are Edith Bunker's out there who will win over the Archie Bunker types as is always the case since good always wins out and the right thing always happens as time goes on.
I absolutley adored jeans character of Edith Bunker. Reason being Edith reminds me of my step mom and Archie had similarities of my Dad. Neither of my parents was racist though. I wept like a baby when Edith passed. My heart broke for Archie, she was his reason for breathing.
All In the Family definitely influenced the thoughts and hearts of America...so many of us saw our fathers in Archie and our mothers in Edith...I wish I had a $ for every time I called my dad "Archie" during those years...that show really did help to free folks from the little "acceptable" barbs of bigotry which most people did not even realize enslaved them ....
I don't think I would ever say that the character Edith was not very bright. I think she was ahead of her time and very progressive. But never allowed to step out of her role as subservient housewife, unfortunately.
Very few are real actors that can be the part, can be so different than they really are, Jean Stapleton and Carroll O'Connor were two of the best ever.
LOL, as a kid I didn't understand the "Gee our old LaSalle ran great" line either...it sounded like "Giarola Sal red great." XDD And then all of a sudden, one day, I just got it (I love when that happens.)
Its a shame she didnt embrace the Edith character. I understand not wanting to be type cast. But when its clear you are not going to reach that level of success again she should have went with it. If she would have done the "Edith" commericals and cameo's. This character would have been much larger than it is now and opened up many other doors. To many celebrities let a role, character, or song destroy them. Make another character memorable and people will forget the last one.
@sksen Yes There isn't anybody that can play the role of Edith Bunker. I too wish I could meet her and thank her. Especially for All in the Family. I will always love it!!!
Jean stapleton used her real voice once in all in the family when she played the double roles as edith and that russian guys fiancee in "a girl like edith" i think thats the name of the title.
His character wasn't one dimensional by any means, something missing w/ the cookie cutouts on TV today. Also, Edith was not dumb. No formal education but very perceptive & wise. What often seemed like babble led to great insights & wonderful advice. She may not have been educated but she was very smart & what she lacked in knowledge she more than made up for in wisdom & love. Archie & Edith=two of the greatest characters on TV. Jean & Carol=two of the greatest actors in any sitcom ever.
@Beatlesfangoogle Try beating this. I have watched all Norman Lear shows, Maude,Good Times, All In The Family, Sanford And Sons. I even did an interview with one of the performers, Bern Nadette Stanis on GoodTimes. The interview is on my channel. Hit me up. I can give you the link for it.
One person either has no idea what constitutes an awesome woman and unutterably good actress, or is a worthless troll who's got nothing better to do than dislike excellent youtube videos.
Once again the promulgating of bizarre misinformation on the internet. I graduated from the Yale School of Drama, am very familiar with its history, and I assure you, Carroll O'Connor was never "the head of the Yale School of Drama." Where are you getting this information from? It's utter nonsense.
I think her intelligence and ego prevented her from seeing what an icon she actually was in that role at that time in history. Some actors/actresses appreciate it and know that they are that character to the public and are appreciative and accept it. Then you have some that allow their ego's to get involved and say they tried so hard NOT to be associated with the famous character they played. Type casting is a fear but it goes deeper if they feel it is beneath their dignity.
I remember being surprised her voice was not like Edith Bunker . She was a class act , and a fine actress . RIP Ms . Stapleton .
What a great lady and actress. Those WERE the days....
Loved her as Edith. I can't think of any other actress who could do that role like Jean did.
She seemed like such a natural and pleasant person. She also had a beautiful smile.
Jean Stapleton was one of the premiere actresses of all time. She played each role with a mastery only the greatest talents are able to do.
I love you Jean, and will forever miss you!
You're leading lady in my book. RIP Ms. Stapleton. Thank you for the may years of laughter!!!!
The most memorable TV show of my youth. I'm sad to see her go, as if she were a beloved aunt. Great actress and a good person. Bye Jean, and thank you.
Stapleton's character was testament to the fact that often times wisdom is not dependent on formal education.
What a lovely interview, with a lovely person. So bright and honest.
Rest in Peace Jean Stapleton. You are a legend. Thank you for the great performances.
I remember the Draft Dodger episode. I grew up on this show and these days there's nothing like that show. Thank you Jean!
One of the most brilliant actors ever. She was spot on in everything I have ever seen her do. Love you Jean Stapleton.
Rob/Boston
She was 77 in this interview! She looked decent for her age, I think! :)
Also loved Ms. Stapleton in the 1982 movie where she played Eleanor Roosevelt. She really captured her so well......I can understand she wanted to spread her wings and get away from Edith Bunker.
It's just so weird hearing her real voice!
Edith Bunker Rules she is so awesome especially when she stood up to Archie!!!!
Happy BIrthday to Jean Stapleton, who turns 90 today. January 19.2013
Definitely one of the most beloved characters in TV history, and quite clearly a very well spoken, intelligent person off camera.
Jean will be greatly missed, but at least she's finally able to see her sister, Maureen again.
RIP, Jean Stapleton. Loved you as Edith Bunker.
All in the Family...my all time favorite show.
All In the Family was the first time I had ever heard of Jean Stapleton. I very much enjoyed the show, but I especially enjoyed her.
Wow, her smile is amazing. May she rest in peace!
She is simply amazing!!!
Jean, you did a great job. Thank you.
Edith's voice: "songs that made the hit parade!" "guys like us we had it made. those were the days!!" :-) love that voice!! LOL RIP Jean!!
One of the BEST...and so missed!! I love you Jean !!
for the laughs you gave me....THANKS!!!!
RIP

jean,,is the best..
I'm probably one of the only 19 year olds that love All in the Family, i just wished they showed it more often.
I think every guy secretly wants an Edith Bunker of his own.
she looks and sounds so great for 88. I love her in All in the family, loved her in Michael and You got mail.
I love Edith. She is one of my favorites! So kind.
SPECTACULAR ACTOR! Love her!
We'll miss you Jean. RIP
My God!! Her voice ISN'T squeaky?!
Saw Ms.Stapleton in person once in a play in 1987 called "Arsenic and Lace" wow a totally different role from her TV role as Edith yes a great talent.
Sometimes i have to remind myself that Edith WAS fictionary
I and my Wife watch All in the Family every night from bed as we record every episode and it is as fresh as in the 1970s.. It will be the same 50 years from now !! Herb
R.I.P. Jean Stapleton.

This woman is brilliant.
i see the reruns now and they are just as fresh and as poignant as they were when i first watched them what a wonderful show
Jean you will be missed R.I.P.
She was so great as Edith Bunker. So talented.
Yoll still be my dingbat.......god bless you great actress
what an amazing person - watching All in the Family - she IS EDITH in such a convincing way - that seeing her here make me not believe it's Jean Stapleton - I guess that is a compliment for an incredible talented actress....
wow
nice interview, the editing fades really put a bummer on it,
Great actress and very dignified Lady!
this is the first actress that i have seen that actually is funny in real life.
:)
@rafflesia Apparently too many people thought it was "Gee, I love those sour grapes." That's why in later seasons, they sing that line in a very drawn out, overexaggerated way so that the words are clear.
It's too weird hearing her speak without Edith's voice.
I grew up on this show. I watch it recorded now. I think it set the stage for further controversial "observational" humor - like Seinfeld, and Curb. Truly a classic, a view changer. "It's (AITF) so fresh and real and true and contemporary, even now". ~ Jean Stapleton @13:55
Those words are oh so true. AITF forever.
We love you and you are no Dingbat!!!!!
I absolutley adored jeans character of Edith Bunker. Reason being Edith reminds me of my step mom and Archie had similarities of my Dad. Neither of my parents was racist though. I wept like a baby when Edith passed. My heart broke for Archie, she was his reason for breathing.
RIP, Jean, may you entertain the heavenly angels too! Edith was probably your most beloved character.
I have always adored Jean. Is she still living? I do a decent impression of her singing the AITF theme song LOL.

@rockboy6292 Try and beat this: I'm 15, and I've been watching All in the Family all my life. I remember watching it when I was 3 or 4 or 5 years old.
Her portrayal of Edith Bunker was the greatest performance of a TV actress in a series by about 100 miles.
Rest In Peace Jean Stapleton.
A great actor makes you forget they are acting. You believe the character is real. Ms. Stapleton certainly fits the bill.
when was this interview filmed?
Great actress.
Other then I Love Lucy That show All In The Family is Number 2 Of All Time

Wasn't The Draft Dodger Christmas?

Jean Stapleton was not related to Maureen Stapleton.
I haven't seen that one, but I read that she didn't want to do the spin-off "Archie's Place" so they killed off Edith.
how could you say awful and All in the family in the same sentence!?
like losing a member of the family rip dear jean
This is weird because she looks the same & i wasn't even born back then & she looks the same as Edith on my DVd's lol.
@jriley2008 ~ yeah, kinda weeirrd, isn't it?
One person either has no idea what constitutes an awesome woman and unutterably good actress, or is a worthless troll who's got nothing better to do than dislike excellent youtube videos.
she looked 50 when she was in all in the family and she still looks 50. she must have looked 50 her whole adult life. it's kind of wierd.

JS comes across as very schoolmarmish.
