AI Scambaiters: O2 creates AI Granny to waste scammers’ time

- O2 has created human-like Daisy, an AI ‘Granny’ to answer calls in real time from fraudsters, keeping them on the phone and away from customers for as long as possible.
With Daisy revealing how you’re not always speaking to the person you think you are, O2 is urging customers to remain vigilant, leave ‘scambaiting’ to the AI experts and report suspected fraudulent calls and texts for free to 7726
I want an AI scam decoy of an old grizzled veteran who gets sidetracked into war stories of the days he fought in the jungle.
"The Ornery Grandpa" should absolutely be model number 2!
And had a slight substance abuse issue now that's he's a recovering alcoholic
AI Abe Simpson 😂
Have it be Ann indeterminant war with lots of conflicting details that get more and more confusing slowly over time.
I love your profile pic, by the way.
Higgins 😂
I loved this. Scammer: "It's been an hour" AI: oh how time flies. Please release more of these. I really enjoyed this example.
Agree! Turn it into short series!
Thise aren't real sound bites. But just a example
Right you are, dear.
you know it's not a legit call because it was a white person.
You can't just have one elderly woman. Have a whole fleet of annoying people.
One of the BEST uses of AI I have seen.
This needs much more advertisement.
It's brilliant but I worry it's one of those where it'll become less effective the more people (and also scammers) know about it.
@@chriswinnard7739 I doubt it. The stats show scammer crime increases each year. There are thousands of them.
The AI talking to scammers is cool, the AI animation they're using to promote it is not.
@@GalarianGuy I bet you invested in horse and buggy right when cars were invented
@@TheeOnlyStolas Are you implying that hiring actual animators is outdated? 😬
I also wouldn't want a car made from stolen horses and buggies.
Scammer: "Stop calling me dear"
Daisy: "Got it, dear"
That was the best 😂
Alright my love, *proceeds to use my love at the end of every sentence*
It's hilarious because I get called "dear" by scammers all the time. It's like their favorite word.
That was my favorite!
😂😂 that's what was said their I couldn't make it out! That's quite funny😂
You’ve just earned my full respect O2. This is so hilarious

so that's how Skynet happened...
That’s the next logical step really, the scammers will be deploying AI bots if not already done.
And we all pay the electricity bill... Hopefully someone realizes soon that its cheaper to investigate these cases.
just another branch if the dead internet theory
The fact that these low life's with no morals have the audacity to get annoyed at someone they are trying to scam for wasting their time...never fails to amaze me
And a little gran no less. No sense of shame ffs
@@kellyor2581 there are many people that have absolutely no sense of shame and a lack of moral standards, who even get elected president or run very successful and completely legal businesses. No need to get crazy about some irrelevant low-life criminal… 😂
The getting angry part really puzzles me, top
No no, they're getting angry at no one other than themselves really. AI isn't a person
yeah the mouth on them!! imagine sayin somethin like that to an auld woman! never mind tryin to rob em 😐
I like how she’s wearing her ring over the kitchen glove
Ring as brass knuckles for the most despicable scammers ;)
In the true spirit of AI lol
She's a recently windowed woman!

"Speak soon, scammers."
Genuinely one of the hardest lines ive heard from an army of cyber-grannies. This is amazing.
My grandma never stopped being sharp, but she was very bored. One of her hobbies was actually wasting scammer's time by pretending she couldn't hear them and faking to comply with the requests while speaking extremely slowly and messing everything up. She's the best.
I think some calls between Daisy and the scammers are worth being released. That'll be some quality content.
Search for "hello this is lenny" on here, I can confirm they're hilarious!
Jolly roger tellephone youtube channel takes this concept and uploads the calls
I'm torn between wanting to listen to them and not wanting to give the scammers training data to avoid her.
@@spidalackwill be really easy to avoid after 3 days

Lol, remember my actual grandma, that still had decent hearing, and kept total brain function/understanding/conversation till her last breath, but when was called by scammers, she would deliberately annoy them by pretending very degraded hearing and comprehension while giving us a knowing smile.
That's amazing xD

probably not true.
@ you did not hear how angry he was…
He was lucky he could resign and leave. In some scam centres he won’t have that option.
@@stubbarn Yup. Some are actual criminal organizations of trafficking nd drugs
How do you approach scammers to make them quit?
Fantastic use of AI. You can't stop people scamming but you can divert them into a granny nightmare.
Just found out today that one of my old coworkers, who'd been with CVS for over 15 years, was fired for selling a gift card over the phone; she knew better, yet it still happened. Scammers are everywhere, they're persistent, and they can take advantage of even veterans of customer service on occasion. The more tools we have to fight them, the better. Thank you for this.
I had one going for at least 45 minutes. He claimed he was going to give me $12,000 if I just gave him my bank account number to put it in! Every time the last question came I knocked on the wall and said I had to answer the door and hung up. He'd call back and try some more! After 45 minutes in a few more beers, I finally broke out laughing! That's about 10 other people that didn't get scammed in that time span! Glad you're joining the team grandma!
with 12,000 in India, they could live and buy grocerries for a year, no wonder they are desparate
@@sportsfansutahthe ones on the phones make next to nothing. You scam $12k you MIGHT get $10 extra, your boss takes the other $11,990....

Yo, whoever thought about this to improve the company image has to be promoted or deserves a raise at least.
This is gold.
they have a time and brain skills trained on all those promotions with small tricks.
Kitboga created this, O2 are just trying to claim credit for using it.
Don't buy it, it's PR BS. TelCo's could implement STIR/SHAKEN if they actually wanted to stop this, they could refuse spoofed numbers, they could do so many things. But they're paid to connect the call so that's what they do.

What a wonderful use of AI. Well done, O2, for taking care of the most vulnerable people in our society.

I hope the scammers can create AI scam bots as well then it'd be a fair fight😂

I'm here after watching a Korean news report about this. I've never "been contacted" by any scammer, but in my country, there are many types of phone call scams (e.g. impersonating a police officer, or a prosecutor), and this AI technology could be really effective for saving people away from scammers. THIS is really brilliant!
P.S. Have you heard about a baseball player Chanho Park (박찬호)? He is (in)famous for talking for really long time, so he got a nickname called "Too Much Talker". In the UK, "Mrs Daisy" doesn't stop her speech; in Korea, "Mr. Park" wouldn't give any chance for scammers to speak, starting from, "When I was in Los Angeles, ..." So, I read a comment from the Korean news saying that "We need a Chanho Park's version of this!" Of course I burst into huge laughter. XD
This is a PR Stunt and you're falling for it, if they actually cared they'd block spoofed numbers and they'd implement STIR/SHAKEN or something equivalent. But they're paid to connect calls so that's what they do, no questions asked. This is just some BS to distract from that fact.
If it takes that much text to explain the joke, is not funny...
@@elmixer9875Well, you read it anyway!
@@gh0stz_z1p I did not
This is a perfect example of "modern problems require modern solutions"
People who try to get others' resources have always existed. They steal, lie, play victim, play on your empathy and guilt etc.
They have nothing of value to offer to others and they know it.
"Stop calling me dear you £&£&!"
"Okay, dear"
O2, you're a genius! :D
Such a brilliant idea! Please create AI grandmas in other languages too!!!
One who switches language at random points.
The AI talking to scammers is cool, the AI animation they're using to promote it is not.
@@GalarianGuy why not?
@@John_3_16 Because this is promotional material, a field where animators have a chance to thrive and make their mark on the world. Instead, what we have here, is stolen information and stolen images used to train an AI model. Also because it's AI, there are no copyright laws applied to it which means anyone can use this imagery to their own leisure, potentially perpetuating more scams because "O2 AI Granny told me this was safe to download!".
The animation is for viewer experience only and plays no part in their scambaiting phone call process.
Your last sentance is a rebuttal to everything before it. @@GalarianGuy
This is quite possibly the most positive thing to happen in 2024. This needs prompting on all media channels / news and advice centres. AI working to defeat the scammers... Absolutely brilliant
If you want more if this, Kitboga has been doing this for about a year now
I like winding scammers up. I tell them l have dementia and keep on asking them the same questions over and over until they are close to a nervous breakdown!!! Scammers please ring me!!
I sometimes have fun with them too. One time I pretended to be an unemployed stoner and had fun, agreeing with them.
I had one where they ask me to go to my computer and press the Windows key. I said there wasn't one and went to great lengths saying what every key on my Commodore Amiga had written on it. I think the joke was lost on the Scammer unfortunately
*This is a wonderful and amazing initiative. Wishing you endless success in infinite phone calls!*
the greatest part is the fact that since these scammers cant speak english very well, its much harder for them to detect the weird quirks in the AI's speech patterns
What if an Scam-AI calls her: they gonna talk... till the End of Time? 😆😆😅
I hope so. All billed to scammer's phone bill and electricity bill and cloud-compute bill, etc. Ok, O2's cloud bill as well.
I doubt this is possible with the actual Technology. The caller has to convince someone to achieve his goal. This needs skill.
Daisy only has to react in a somewhat meaningful way.
Probably, but O2 will get their profit, not scammers 😅
Up to 40 minutes! 😅
No they'll talk until one of their parameters which say "Break off conversation unless certain objectives are met" kicks in. Duh. 🙄
The only time I'll ever approve anything made with AI
The AI talking to scammers is cool, the AI animation they're using to promote it is not.
@@GalarianGuy Should they pay an actual granny to mime?
@@hesketh7085 They should pay an actual animator to animator it. But also yes, they should pay whichever grannies images they used to base this AI creation's appearance off of.
@GalarianGuy Would there BE a based likeness? Isn't this just a creation of an amalgamation of thousands of people? I understand your position, but I think in this instance, the AI imagery is relevant to underline to scammers that the only person's time they're wasting is their own - AI will just keep generating and generating and generating effortlessly in response. I think making a bespoke animation for this advert would undermine that message.
@@hesketh7085 Yes, they will have trained the AI imagery of that AI old lady image off of pictures of old ladies, that is how generative AI works. I doubt they paid any of the old ladies in those images to use their likeness, or even the photographers of the images.
The AI imagery plays no part in the scambaiting process and is only for viewer experience.
If you really wanted to do this correctly with minimum effort, as made evident with the use of AI imagery in the first place, they could hire an artist to create a V-Tuber or a 2D character in a program like Adobe Character Animator to act the same as the AI animation used. These basically work like motion capture and the lip sync picks up the audio for which letter to use. If you're a fan of this, I highly recommend checking out Kitboga, he did this idea first and is much more ethical with how he does it.
It would actually be more helpful if ISPs worked towards ending caller id spoofing. Because then spam callers would have to resort to using real numbers and those could be easily blacklisted.
Exactly. Adding the country of origin would be very helpful too.
ISPs can’t really do anything about that. The problem is that back when the Caller ID system was created, it was decided to allow PBX/VoIP systems to participate. That means that if you have your own VoIP to PSTN gateway, your caller ID is whatever you want it to be. Unless that control is taken away and given to their upstreams (never happen), Caller ID spoofing cannot be solved. IoW, Caller ID is so useless we might as well not have it.
@@yamamefish Yes, thanks for pointing that out. On the other hand, the caller's IP address is known, notwithstanding VPNS and other technoques for spoofing. So country of origin could be available.
@@yamamefish huh. I already wondered about this. Now I know. Thank you for this little tidbit of information!
@@yamamefish Fun fact, IP address routing is nearly as bad. I say nearly, because there has been a huge concerted effort to secure BGP but it's still possible to "steal" vast IP ranges owned by major companies or public entities.
AI at its finest! Way to go, O2 for having some fun at the scammers expense. It would be amazing to see this technology go global.
It would be brilliant if you lot shared recordings on RUclips and let the whole world laugh as Daisy messes with those scammers! :D
That a network company decides to take this initiative is certainly something to applaud
I’m in email security, my team enjoyed this. Thanks for posting!
This is brilliant!! Well done O2
This is a PR stunt please don't fall for it. If they actually cared they'd block spoofed numbers and they'd implement STIR/SHAKEN and deny any connections from TelCo's who haven't.

An AI decoy to bait scammers is honestly one of the best uses of AI I've seen so far.
Thank you Daisy, we need a version of this in the United States. 😊
That granny reminds me Colin Robinson of "What We Do in the Shadows" - an energy vampire. 🤣
Exactly!😂
Lovely idea. They need to make it possible to store a relay number in your phone so that you can say to the scammer "oh, my mother always deals with such things" and then you just transfer the call to AI Granny (and her cat Fluffy), like transferring a call to a colleague at work. Also O2: Please invent lots of granny-voices so that the scammers don't recognise the spoof.
Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes a thousand times yes
That’s what I was thinking as well- then the phone company could also track them down while Daisy keeps them on the line.
This restores my faith in humanity. Thanks for doing this ❤Those scammers are truly evil.

For an even better experience, turn the voice of the sweet old Granny into that of a scary, menacing demon after 1 hour of call. Sweet old Granny transforms into Big Bad Wolf! Whoa, what big teeth you have! That should provide the caller with the shock of a lifetime and enough to make sure Little Riding Hood never calls again!
Or, just gradually change the tone of the voice, from old to young, female to male, or something of that nature, to make the scammer think he's going crazy.
My favourite use of AI I've seen so far!
Only a matter of time for the scammers to get AI on their side. Will be a battle between two AIs then.

They should release more of these regularly, it's so entertaining to listen to the uncanny incompetent daisy
Daisy's destruction of the careers of scammers and their success rates are utterly phenomenal. Wish to see more from her in the next year or so!
O2, I hope you have different grandmother voices so they don't recognize the only one AI grandma, then disconnect.
I don't think it'll matter if they disconnect because when the number is reported as a scam number, any calls from that number will automatically be routed to Daisy so they can hang up as much as they like, I guess they could call from a different number but when that number is reported as well if I'm understanding it correctly it'll be routed to Daisy as well so hanging up and calling back they'll still get Daisy
This is the first constructive use of AI I've seen. Bravo!
This is more of a marketing campaign than anything else, but it's really fun!
There are great ethical uses of ai too. Its not all bad. image generators steal art, text models can be dubious and give misinformation, but this is a completely ethical and beneficial way to use AI for everyone! Great job!
This is the best thing that humanity has ever created :) Please tell me you're going to post some of the scammers getting scammed.
Assuming this also gets active when O2 calls for a "better contract".
You got one of those calls too, did you? It must have been Daisy who called me and got me to agree to a better contract by promising I'd be notified if I used all my data allowance. I got no notifications of reaching the limit but I got the bills for extra used all the same.
@gregoryfriston7091 once in a week
Are we about to see an arms' race where the scammers also use AI and we end up with a phone network that consists 90% of bots wasting bots' time?
Fantastic. This is absolutely fantastic. Please give O2 all the awards in existence.
One of the favourite "who's on first" anti-scammer routines was a guy who would ask, "Could you repeat that last bit?" and about halfway through, say, "No, the other bit." and then do that enough times that they had repeated their entire script at least twice. Then, he would just start drilling down for details. "Which computer?" "Which account?" "How long will this take?" "Could you repeat that last bit again?" "No, the other bit."
Now THIS is what ai should be used for! From an actual British person, I can confirm this is definitely working! I used to get random scam calls every couple of weeks but now they’ve completely stopped!
I really wanna see some of the conversations between the scammers and Daisy or a new spam decoy ai cause that’d be awesome‼️
A brilliant concept! I used to work in the fraud prevention department of a company and also always - on my own initiative - tried to occupy the time of a person I already knew to be a fraudster for as long as possible - because I knew that if they were talking to me, they were not effectively scamming someone else.
My first thought is if this is a real project or just a publicity stunt
is this number available for everyone to use to report?
Yes, you can also email phishing at HMRC etc, they have a list of ways to contact them.
I reported a scam message to 7726 yesterday. When you get a message like that, click-hold on the message, press the 3 dots and forward it to 7726 - you will get a confirmation to report on your screen, just select yes, then you will get the option to block the number.
Yes, 7726 is the number for ALL UK operators to report Spam. Forward the text or send the number that called you to 7726.
