      In an ABLOY PROTEC2 locking system, different products can be keyed into
      the same master key system and thus all products can be operated with
      just a single key. This simplifies your locking system and key
      management. The range is wide, there are 1,97 billion different key
      combinations providing the possibility to create extensive master key
      systems that fulfil your exact specifications.

I mean it's technically correct but they're so vastly different as to not really mean anything. BosnianBills lock just tensioned weird. This one has a rotary core/key in order to be able to rekey it fairly easily. So, definitely a lot different.

    Seems effective in security through obscurity. If single pin picking is the only way in, I'd say it's safe enough for the vast majority of attacks.

    • @coolmanjack1995
      @coolmanjack1995 3 года назад +2

      I'd say most attacks are coming at something that isn't the lock, i.e. bust a window, kick the door in. And of the small number of people actually going after locks they will probably be raking or using bump guns and if those dont work theyre just gonna drill. Idk I just dont hear of many people getting their stuff stolen and the thief supposedly having busted in using a skilled single pick technique but maybe Im just not cool enough to live in a place where people have stuff other people really want to steal

He studies and understands the lock before recording, for any of these more "review-like" videos. Challenge videos are a different category, but even then, LPL has repeatedly trained on the same class of lock in the past, building the skills to attack an unknown lock. To draw attention to some well mentioned issues already brought up, and some flaws in the logic that makes this far more secure than people give it credit for, before I rip it down where it fails:
    Big thing. I saw no low skill attack vectors. If I can't beat it with a needle or rake it is already enough to work as a deterrent. Any skill requirement is an instantly viable lock in the real world for 90% of use cases. So let's move onto the concerns people pointed out.
    One concern is someone having one of these keys then using it to duplicate your key after seeing the combination. Yes that's doable. But I've recreated normal keys from memory when provided blanks and a file for fun. Most people can't do that. It doesn't make those locks any more or less secure if it still stumps most pickers. A rare talent or skill combined with an exceptional memory is required and if anything my method just bypassed all security measures.
    A slightly less exceptional but still decent memory is needed to recreate the combination for this lock if they saw it and couldn't take the time to write it down at that moment and double check. Human memories for numbers, addresses, and similar strings is getting notably worse in our digital age, instead our brains are becoming better at rapidly sorting through information once we find it, before dropping it after it's used. Also taking a clear enough photo isn't that discreet guys so don't worry on that. Reading stampings on metal isn't easy if you can't handle the item at hand directly. Real world practicality is a thing lock nuts forget. Not many people need to worry about someone holding the key needed to open your valuables, pulling out their phone, adjusting angle and focus to read most stamps well enough and snapping a picture without you knowing or taking the key. Instead they'll steal the key. This is assuming the person paranoid enough to be worried about such things doesn't shuffle their key. If you are concerned about the combination aspect after that don't use combination locks, the concerns for them are standard across the board.
    We should also point out, these keys are RARE. Like sure I can just buy one, but unless I own a lock like this why would I? The average infiltrator won't have more than a pocket of the most commonly needed tools in his belt plus any specialist tools he expected. This securely locks us in the domain of standard picks, common specialist picks for common weird locks, a few pieces of wire, and destructive attacks. If you can stop those against most people using those you're safe. In fact it's so weird it will probably be enough to make the common thief give up at a glance. Heck the common spy would look at it, be confused, see if it pops fast, if not leave and do some research or find another way in. If you have a key like this you already are more prepared than any lock could stop, alarms are your new deterrent. Not locks.
    Now we should look at the pick time by LPL right? Not really. He's an exceptional picker, but he also has time with these picks before each video and his lack of fumbles on camera shows either confidence to the max or practiced rehearsals and retakes or both. He's also familiar with the lock, both model and his particular instance, before he hits record. This makes his pick times impressive but hard to judge against. This doesn't make him a fraud, just makes him a bad barometer. It's like judging a Kevlar vest against an antitank rifle. Don't.
    So we can say this lock isn't the disaster instantly seen by many. Real world practicality is on its side. But it is flawed.
    I will say though, design wise this lock has one key flaw. No shutter. So assuming it had amazingly difficult to pick pins, the lack of shutter just makes it too easy to see and access the pins, that and front tension, which is a bit disappointing but forgivable on most locks, harms this lock more than the possible combination memorization attacks or LPLs pick time.
    This securely puts this lock in the same domain as most mid-range combination locks. You need something better than trash, but nothing amazing. It actually would be good in bulk in medium security locations where more than one person needs access. Examples being to keep access panels locked in factories, lockers in work places, maybe cases of tools at job sites, even schools to lock up gym equipment. Seriously this thing works anywhere a combination lock does. Give everyone who needs access a key and a combination booklet.

      @@billykaelin6358 If a lock needs 'special preparation' to easily break into (Buying one of those keys fe.) then its already good, coz no lock can defend vs that. And the more 'extreme' it looks the better deterrent it is if no easy obvious bypass, even if easy to pick.

    The advantage of this lock, is that you can buy many of them, and key them to be identical, and rekey them when and if you want to. And that makes it a very interesting lock to have. In fact, I'd like to buy 10 of them right now, if they're not too expensive.

      This exactly. I purchased two of them just after their Kickstarter campaign ended so I could have the same key open the front and the back door and be able to change the combination whenever I see fit. I hide a key set to the wrong combination outside in case I lose my key or I want to let a friend in when I'm not there yet. It's very useful.
      Being a little bit of a lock picking geek, the locks are nice to play around with and it's a very cool key to have. I love it. Of course, it was better until LPL showed how easy they can be picked but like you said, it might be easy once you take time to analyze and understand how it works and have the custom tools. An unprepared picker with standard tools will have a hard time opening it. He'd be better off getting my hidden dummy key and try the 81 possible combinations once he figured them out, but setting a combination on the key takes at least 15 to 30 seconds with practice, which means an average of at least 15 minutes in frond of the door fiddling around with the key until he gets the good one. That's way more time than needed for the old lady living below to get out with her broomstick to scare the guy off.
      So yes, the concept could be improved, it's definitely not unpickable, but it's still a way better lock than the typical Kwikset everybody have, with the added advantage of being able to set and change the combination yourself. A great product in my opinion. I'm glad I could get the locks while they were available.

      less than 2 percent of actual home thefts were caused by someone single pin picking in the USA. Most theifs aren't casing your house and getting to know all your locks and how they work they're pretty sloppy since they have to break in get what they want and get out of there quick before raising suspicions. You're more likely to have a window smashed in or a door kicked down than being robbed by someone that has picked your door open.

    Seems like a better idea would have been to have the actual depths of the 6 potions be unique per lock/key, so that it’s truly two factor security - you’d have to have both the key and the combo.
    That, and much better pick resistance.

    The wide keyway may bring down the possible variations, but only if you have a key. And these locks are not common enough for the common thief.
    This doesn't change the situation, but realistically speaking it's very unlikely that it will matter.
    The pick resistance does matter though and this doesn't seem to be very high if you can tension it.
    Also it doesn't look very beefy, so an destructive attack would be probably the most common way for getting around this lock.

    • @MysteriousFigure
      @MysteriousFigure 5 лет назад +5

      @@D3X1K_AXYZ Huxleypig managed to pick the door lock using a pick gun (the one with the weird bendy tip) and some weird method where he constantly release and reapplied the tension to the core - he said the same could be done with the padlock core, and said he had reports of people opening it that way, but didn't show it himself. Either way, it doesn't look as secure as it might first seem if you can use a pick gun, but considering the majority of thieves who attack locks use brute force methods or bypass methods, I don't think it would affect it too much in a real life scenario. With the door lock, I always found it rather pointless, as in most cases, the doors themsleves and people's windows are easier entry points - it's like sticking a protec2 in your door, but having a wooden door frame - this tends to be the case with a lot of people's doors, unless you live somehwere like London (UK example), where I've seen armored doors installed (due to the high crime rate) that could probably actually work well together which such locks.

    1300 still isn't great. although, to be fair, I don't know what the normal keyspace is for an average home lock.
    when I was a kid, my grandmother said that when her house key was the old-fashioned kind (maybe a lever tumbler lock?) she randomly discovered that it worked in the lock of a private restroom in an office building near where she worked. I'm guessing the keyspace wasn't great for those, either.
