Nik Color Efex Pro is a great tool and so versatile. A lot of people overlook its power because many of the effects are too strong at their default settings. You should check out my Nik Color Efex book (sorry for the hard sell).
Thank you , another interesting/thought provoking edit . I have the original and free NIK collection but it never really clicked with me apart from "midnight" and some B+W editing , so I could never see the value in the new versions . I found I could do similar with the powerful and often under estimated Lr5 adjustment brush; and the radial and grad filters . Perhaps I should/will explore my old versions again. The trouble is you have already given me plenty enough Affinity Photo homework ; the best being Frequency separation Orton effect --- I may have some little tips to share with that soon .
Thanks Robin for another helpful video. As an aside have you noticed that DXO pro raw now has a control button to switch on and off global sharpening? A very useful update as in some cases i felt that it over sharpened things just a bit too much!
I bought Nik years ago, loved it mainly for SilverFX, but I've been pretty down on the app support. Looks like the old code can't be updated to natively run on M1-series Macs, and I don't want to invest in products that rely entirely on Apple's Rosetta emulation to work. Still, you get some very nice results.
@@RobinWhalley No, as I wrote earlier (deleted by moderator?) it's simply *compatible* with the M1-native version of Photoshop now. The Nik plugins themeselves are NOT M1-native, but are Intel-native and run emulated in Apple's Rosetta.
I don't think it was a moderator who deleted your comment, I think it was the RUclips bot. It can remove comments for the strangest reasons. I saw your comment come in and tried to reply but it had already been removed. I had been led to believe it was full M1 compatibility so stand corrected. I don't have an M1 chip so can't really look into this in more detail.
@@RobinWhalley Thanks Robin. I always thought you were an upstanding guy, wasn't sure why it was deleted. It's good that the bug was fixed which made the plugins fail to work with M1-native Photoshop, but I really fear that the collection is made of crufty spaghetti-code that's impossible for DXO's coders to update properly into native apps. It'll still be usable, but use of an Apple translation layer with native apps will slow things down, and I ultimately worry about long-term support.
I do agree that there will be some spaghetti code. it’s always a problem when a small company designs applications which develop over years at different rates. People forget these were all sold as separate products before being bundled as a collection. I was involved in the software industry for around 25 years and saw the same problems everywhere, even with global organisations.
Problem with using these tools too much though is to me it can make the image a little fake looking like its done IMO here. I prefer more natural images.
But the problem in this instance was that I couldn't be in this location at the right time of year. It solves a problem and I will take that over not being able to produce the image.
Thanks Robin. Most helpful as always. I seem to learn more about Nik from your videos then I do Niks videos
Thank you. You should let DxO know. Perhaps they will offer me a lucrative deal (I wish). 😀
Thanks Robin. Was just thinking how much I need to learn Nik Color Efex 4.

I'm glad you liked it and found it thought provoking. Thank you
Thanks Robin. The filters I use to attain the result but you have shown me how to be more subtle with my editing
You're welcome and thank you.
