There is some positive news for Gareth Southgate despite the amount of criticism he has received lately.
The Three Lions were on the verge of being eliminated from Euro 2024 by Slovakia, a team that was 40 places lower in the globe and had never won a knockout game in a major event. The outsiders would have deserved the win as well, with Ivan Schranz capitalizing on England's poor defence to put Slovakia ahead. Until stoppage time, England had neither a response nor a shot on goal.
However, it was in the 95th minute-when he saved England with a thunderous overhead kick-that Jude Bellingham realized he is a Real Madrid player and a possible winner of the Ballon d'Or. England's tails were up, and in the first minute of extra time, Harry Kane, who had delivered another poor performance, nudged the weary Three Lions ahead. With that tremendous kick, Gareth Southgate was saved as the captain completed a dramatic comeback.
Defeating Slovakia and securing a quarter-final tie with Switzerland may be a fortunate event. But they will be flying home on Saturday unless things improve as they are running out of luck.
