  • While our Jasmine rice always comes out good, I've had continued problems with brown rice. And since I've been eating it more and more, we decided that maybe a rice cooker was in order. Thanks for the suggestion, folks.

As dishonorable I am in being Asian, I’ve always cooked rice in a rice cooker. My mom made it absolutely certain that I wouldn’t be boiling rice from a pot.
It’s always been one of those old school style rice cooker. Where you have the simple “Cook” and “Warm” switch.
As far as the rice and water ratio, I was always told, “put as much rice you want into a pot [usually 2-3 cups]. Wash/rinse the rice. As far as water is concerned, take the tip of your middle finger, and fill it up to the first line on your finger [like the crease]. And then flip the switch”

  • @BlueLightning2554
    @BlueLightning2554 6 лет назад +8

I suggest adding water to the rice pot so that it's easier to scrub when washing it. I also wash my rice directly in the pot instead of washing it in another bowl and then adding water
As for the keep warm option, I suggest if you're planning on using it, to add a little more water than suggested to keep it from drying out and possibly scorching the rice and getting it stuck to the pot

we usually steam leftovers in our rice cooker along with rice. My mom usually makes rice first, and since it takes an hour, she uses that hour to make other things, like stir fry, and whatnot. It's that "have a bunch of dishes in the middle that you share with everyone, and you have a bowl of just rice" instead of "have all your stuff on one plate/bowl" A lot of my Chinese friends families do this, including mine.

We have one and love it. You have to play around with it. We also add beans and vegetables 1/2 way through then at the end, add soy and sesame sauces. I do not rinse rice in the rice maker bowl since it will get scratched.

If you want to cook rice faster, that pressure cooker you got a while back can also probably cook rice. The one we had in college could cook rice in less than 10 minutes

  • @roselii49
    @roselii49 6 лет назад +4

Personally, I just scoop the rice onto my bowl and mix it there. I never found the need to mix it in the bowl.
You can probably just leave the rice in the bowl? We usually scoop out the leftover rice into a separate bowl and refrigerate it (then microwave it up).
Although on one hand, now you have an excuse to use the leftover rice and make fried rice with it.

  • @hpfan124

My parents had always made rice on the stovetop so that's what I grew up with. When I went to college I learned about rice cookers and it was a complete gamechanger. I loved how I could just set it and go do other things while it was cooking. I've never had it in my rice cooker for that long but mine was a tiny rice cooker that wasn't that great of quality (maybe about $20 originally but I bought it secondhand from someone for $10). Now I have a larger rice cooker (of medium quality) that I use for meal prep.
The rice in the smaller rice cooker took about 25 minutes normally for about 1-2 cups of rice so maybe something with the settings (Jasmine rice) or since it's a fancier (better quality) rice cooker makes it take longer for yours.

Your rice cooker is so small and cute! It's like the rice cooker I got myself when I moved into an apartment. Aww. Welcome to the rice cooker halfington, hope you enjoy your stay.
Our rice cooker at home makes enough for maybe four or five people. It has two settings: cook and warm; and the thing has lasted for yeaaaars. We only use it for rice, and it makes rice probably four or five times a week. We're Filipino, rice is kind of what we do lol. It's to a point that growing up, I had no idea what other people ate if it wasn't rice. XD

I'm very confused why your rice cooker takes an hour.. We have a small (max 3 cups) rice cooker since it's just my mom and I eating usually and it cooks within 15minutes! We usually cook it for dinner/lunch. Leave it in and around the end of dinner time unplug (turn it off) and let it cool down + put it in the fridge. (You can easily reheat it back to it's normal state with a sprinkle of water or a wet napkin over it and 30 seconds into the microwave!)

Ive never had a rice cooker until i lived with my Asian roommate and my god I will never go back to not having one. I was always iffy with my rice, sometimes it was over cooked or undercooked but i never had a problem with the rice cooker and we have a pretty cheap on that we found in the Caribbean I think ours only does white rice but it is so worth it. Just start the rice at the beginning of prepping the meal and it’s done and still warm when it’s done. So worth it to me especially since I’m really bad at planning when things are going to be done and nothing comes out at the same time.

I have a rice cooker. It's a simple one where the only settings are cook and keep warm. You just put water and rice in it and when there's no more water in it, it becomes too light to weigh a scale down below the cooker and kicks it to the keep warm setting automatically. It's been going strong for over 10 years at this point.

One caveat to keeping rice in the rice cooker overnight or something that I've noticed is that sometimes the rice will end up getting a bit mushier.

  • @PyraXadon

I've never seen such a tiny rice cooker before. All I've ever seen of them is my family's models where we can pack in 5-7 cups with room to spare should we so desire. It's greatly amusing watching you two learn the ins and outs of a rice cooker having cooked rice for my family ever since I was 8.
On the note of 'other uses', there does exist other models with steaming function and other parts that allow you to do things like steam dumplings in them. I know this cause my college roommate had one of those, and I saw him taking out dumplings from the rice cooker. It was a weird sight.

  • @LinguisticFanatic

Yes I have a rice cooker. Mine even came with a basket so I could steam stuff with it while the rice is cooking. I always change up how I wash my rice beforehand to determine how sticky or loose I want my rice to be. I wanted really loose rice that wasn't too soggy the last time I made some so I barely washed my rice. It worked like a charm. My sister's rice cooker used to require her to put in slightly less water than was called for so that she wouldn't end up with a soggy mess. I still stovetop cook my rice when I don't want it to have the sticky texture I get from my rice cooker.
I have no clue why yours said it would take about an hour (though you did say it went off early) to cook jasmine rice. I cook one cup of rice in about 15ish minutes in mine.

If anyone is looking for a great rice cooker, get the Joyce Chen microwave rice cooker. It's faster than cooking rice on the stove, costs less than $20, and can also be used for steaming vegetables and popping popcorn. And takes up 1/2 the space of the one Stephen & Mal got. We've had one for over 20 years and it still works great.

  • @PhoenixGirl1

The rice cooker I have is for sure a lot bigger but also a lot more simpler then the one you guys have. We just fill up to 4 cups of rice add the water and flip the switch. It does keep the rice warm after cooking as well. And that pretty much cooks in just 20 minutes. Which makes me think you guys got a slow ricer cooker, but I’m not sure. Also yes we also make a rice dish called kitcheri with that rice cooker and maybe that would take only 1 hour or 30 minutes to cook. I also have a smaller on but it is just a mini version of the bigger one, with the exact same functions.

My family has an older model of Rice cooker (I have no idea what kind) and it has lasted my whole life. While the rice does take longer to cook, it allows you to leave the rice alone while it cooks so you can focus on other elements of the dinner. The keep warm feature is really useful as well and I've never burned rice with it.

I'm really surprised that you guys spent the extra money to get a "fancy" rice cooker (It even plays Twinkle Twinkle Little Star!), and I was even more surprised to hear that the time estimate for how long the rice would cook is so long. I think it only takes 30 minutes for me to have enough rice to last 3 meals for 1 person. Maybe it's just the cooking mode you guys selected and you'll find out shortcuts someday and have it cook for much shorter time?
But anyway, a rice cooker is nice because you can set it and forget about it for a while. I've spent semesters of college where I get home from class, set the cooker, take a nap, wake up to a meal, and head off to more classes.
Also, explore rice cooker recipes! People have figured out amazing things to cook inside of rice cookers, more than just rice. I know someone who cooked chicken in it!

Our family got a new rice cooker last year (Hitachi brand) and it's pretty nice. It doesn't tell the estimate time to cook, but it'll show the timer when it's about 5 minutes left. Of course there's also "Keep Warm" mode. The other nice thing is that it show how long the rice has been keeping warm. (for 12 hours, after that it'll reset back to 0)

Our rice cooker cost maybe $25-$30 and was from Target. It still works perfectly after 3.5 years of regular use. I just put in 1.5 cups of water for every cup of white rice and it takes about 30 minutes. It doesn’t sing me a song though.

I'm going to put a little tip for anyone cooking brown rice (or any rice) in a rice cooker- my mom and I both have different rice cookers. Mine boils over whenever I cook brown rice but her's doesn't. If you have trouble with your brown rice boiling over in a rice cooker (or any rice for that matter), put a couple drops of oil inside and it should be good to go.

  • @seriouskano2

Go look up recipes for rice cookers. You'll be surprised what kind of food you can make with it, like Chili con carne. Minimal effort and very little to clean up afterwards.
Mine's a little more expensive but I can even make cake with it.

  • @PocariCalpico

    I'm so excited for y'all!
Some rice cookers actually sing/tell you in a robotic voice that your rice is done lol. I've only used mine for cooking rice, not sure about the other options. I guess owning a rice cooker seems normal to me, so I never really thought about the cost.
Think of it as an investment, because this machine should last you a few years at least. To justify the cost, you just have to eat rice often. You're sacrificing time and money for the convenience. You want good quality rice without the hassle of cooking it over the stove. Make it in the morning for you to eat for lunch/dinner. Make BiBimBap or other dishes involving rice more often, or even try making sushi at home!

I use this rice cooker to save time while I'm at work or sleeping. I don't have time to stand over a stove and cook rice on a cooking pot.
Time is money. The rice cooker paid for itself over time when you don't have to cook the rice manually.
Now, you can rest while the rice is cooking in the rice cooker.

There are so many buttons on that rice cooker! My family's rice cooker (it's an Aroma and was like 30 bucks) has a single switch that acts as the timer to let us know when the rice is done cooking. (The switch basically pops up like the bread in a standing toaster) Ours also doesn't take an hour to make rice, and it tastes fine so I'm slightly confused by this button heaven of a rice cooker.

  • @Cerino669

You can do multiple things with your rice cooker! I'm sure many have already said, but one of the major things you can do is make fresh bread. There's also a few matcha hot cake recipes as well.
If you're not that enthusiastic about pastries in your rice cooker, you can still make Maze Meshi, which is basically flavoured rice with various vegetables thrown into the cooker at the same time. You can treat it like a melting pot for rice where as long as the flavours compliment each other, the final dish will be quite delicious.
My personal favorite is actually a type of sticky rice where you combine the short grain rice with chinese style sausage along with shiitake mushrooms and a touch of sesame oil. Hope you enjoy your new experiments with this fabulous machine.

Without a pressure cooker: put the rice in the pot, put double the amount of water in, have it heat up on high heat until you start to see bubbles (yes the lid is off), turn the heat down to low and put the lid on, have it cook for 12 more minutes, and you're hopefully done. Assuming you're don't mess it up like me. The entire process is like 16-17 minutes

I just have a little one that just has a switch with "warm" and "cook". If I'm heating up something else to go with it, I'll put it in with the rice for a bit while it's on "warm".

I have this rice cooker/steamer and it's great. I can set some rice to cook in the bottom of the cooker, then put a steaming tray above it and steam vegetables or fish while steaming the rice, and it always comes out soo good!!

I have a rice cooker. Now, granted, it's a cheep walmart cooker (Black & Decker I think) but it has my rice cooked in about 20 minutes. Equile ratio rice:water. The longest it has ever taken was with the brown rice (tried only once) and it was about 30 min.

(Literally typing this as I watch so forgive me if it sounds scatter brained)
    1. I saw how you washed the rice and I have a suggestion for that. I usually wash the rice in the rice cooker, then drain the dirty water out, and then add the new water in the rice cooker to save the bits of rice.
    2. Also congrats on getting a rice cooker! Rice cookers are amazing and you guys got a really nice brand.
    3. ALSO I noticed that your rice cooker can make asian porridge! You guys should look up a recipe and try it one day (maybe in the winter season). I'm actually curious on how much this particular brand and model costed for you guys.
    4. ALSO since my family consumes rice on a daily basis we do make extra rice, leave it in the rice cooker, and heat it up the next day for whatever meal we might have. It saves a lot of time and effort. Since your portion is one cup of rice, you should consider making two cups if you want extra rice for the next up coming days.
    Hope this helps!

Yes! The aroma from a rice cooker is so good. We've had one for a few years and it's great. It's like set it and forget it but with rice. You don't have to worry about spill over or cooking it too longer or short just focus on other stuff and I love it. I don't know what model we have exactly but it can do four kinds of rice and other stuff as well...but I only ever do white rice lol.
Also let us not forget that halfington should now be a word.

Ah I just measure the water by eyeballing it, I've done it for so many years I haven't messed up in a loooong time. Oh yes, and the settings on it consist of "on" and "keep warm". 15-25 mins is usually how long it takes for jasmine, somewhat longer for brown.

Stephen, don't worry about having issues with cooking brown rice. My family has that issue as well regardless of how we cook the brown rice. The brown rice just never comes out right and we use a rice cooker.

  • @danielareiner2420

Brown rice: 1 cup rice = 2 cups water. 2 cups of rice = 4 cups water. And so on. Also, I never clean my rice only because I feel that the water is going to boil everything. But everyone else I know cleans it. I left my rice cooker on keeping on warm one time and after 9 to 10 hours the rice at the bottom was getting hard and crusty, so just warning you it must happen. I've never eating rice for breakfast but if your rice cooker says it can keep warm till night then cool. Oh and one more thing, your rice cooker is an Asian brand and the reason it did that song is because almost everything in Korea and Japan play cute little songs like that. My brother lived in Soel, and his washer and dryer makes cute music like that too. The train arriving at the station makes cute music like that too.

I have pretty much the same rice cooker, so I really do recommend you do quick cook if you're only doing one cup of jasmine rice. It takes about a half hour and the quality is comparable.
Another interesting thing to do is you can boil eggs while cooking rice or make fluffy pancakes. I haven't done the latter, but it's possible.

Actually yes! Letting the rice cook overnight is pretty useful for making lunch the next day! Just know how to estimate the delay on the rice cooker and you’re all set! I do that sometimes when there are no leftovers in the fridge.

You can actually make a japanese style cheescake in a rice cooker among other things! I have a tiger rice cooker and it works alot faster like 20 minutes for jasmine rice mine has alot less functions but gets the job done and super easy to understand as there is only one button to cook it.

  • @ferdikinns2436

Awesome! You finally got a rice cooker! :D
To answer some of your end questions...
The rice cooker in my household can cook a larger quantity. We cook an average of 5 cups of rice at a time (to accommodate 4 people), but it can cook more than that.
You or Mal can easily look up some cake/cheesecake rice cooker recipes; your rice cooker seems to be the ideal kind for those things, and I'm sure you and/or Mal would have fun making some cakes with it!
As for the Keep Warm settings and limitations... Most rice cookers nowadays do have that function. Bigger rice cookers (like mine) would even keep them warm for a longer period (as the quantity of rice may be larger); you could cook a whole days worth in the morning, and keep it warm until you're done with dinner. I would, however, recommend experimenting with how much water you put if you were to keep it in the cooker for longer periods of time. No drastic changes, just the recommended water quantity to a cup more. This is to ensure your rice doesn't get too dry by being in the cooker too long.
I did hear Mal say the recommended duration for keeping your rice warm is 12 hours, correct? (So that it doesn't spoil/go bad from overexposure to heat.) I believe that is what is - a recommendation. However, if you mix in some vinegar (a spoon or two) with the rice before you cook it, it can actually keep your rice good for a longer period. Not only does the vinegar prevent your rice from going bad IN the rice cooker, but in general. So packed lunches with rice wouldn't go bad as fast.

I always have this debate with Carlos lol! He has always used a rice cooker, but I've always made rice in a pot. I've ran into similar issues with the rice boiling over and the staining on the stove. I've never used a rice cooker without Carlos. I prefer using a pot since it's often quicker and still tastes good and has a good texture!

I have a microwave rice cooker but you can do this with the one you got, put broth instead of just water and you can get a rice infused with flavor. Also add a hole Tomato to make tomato rice.

My Mom had a rice cooker when my siblings and I were younger and it made perfect rice for years. She said she bought the rice cooker in 1986 from some store in New York City’s China Town, but it broke in 2008 or 2009. We have not been able to find the same rice cooker because it didn’t have any kind of logo or brand name on it. Since then we have tried various rice cookers, but none were as good so now-a-days we just make the bagged rice you cook in a pot (which is so much less convenient than setting a rice cooker a few hours before dinner)
If that Zojirushi Rice cooker is good, then maybe we’ll check it out.

That is a ridiculously long time. I personally don't have a rice cooker, but a friend does, and I think it was done with the rice in about 5-10 minutes. It was faster than doing it on the stove. So I'm really confused about these cooking times here.

  • @linkcourage1
    @linkcourage1 6 лет назад

Benefit of that rice cooker: You can measure, pour and cook, then walk away and forget. Unlike when cooking on the stove, where you have to keep an eye on it. Rice cookers also have the benefit of that Keep Warm mode where you can hold rice for hours with barely any degradation in quality. Jasmine is also a very aromatic rice, so if you weren't getting the smell from cooking it on the stove, then you weren't cooking it slow enough or long enough (ie not properly). The same will be done with Basmati since its also considered an aromatic rice. Honestly, rice cookers are amazing. And if you can calculate a few things, you can cook pre packaged dinners, like Sidekicks, in the cooker as well.
