Coming in as someone who had never heard the name Caroline Calloway before, this documentary didn't really explain to me what happened and why people hate her so much. I feel like I was only given the end of the story, leaving me with no context. So I'm not really sure what the goal was.

She “scammed “ people into thinking they were making part of her exclusive glamorous life, like partying hard and being a student in rich people schools , she promised a book that never came and made people paid for it , and people raged all over the internet when her best friend exposed all of that including that her real life wasn’t real at all and it was all a plan to get rich and a popular writer . So , I guess her real fans , not the bots, felt the need to start trolling her for being someone she wasn’t , and specially for “ stealing “ people money , that developed a depression that Vice is showing how she’s dealing with it .

@@ashleygroobz there was a section (3 minutes 35 seconds) where they talked about when she started her instagram, paid for followers, and created an artificial identity in order to project the type of person that would become an influencer, until it happened. me too, ages 16-23ish.. have to thank her for her (or natalies) early writing, as one of the first "influencers" I ever heard of (term wasn't really even around back then) those captions inspired me to travel and write when I was super young and impressionable. I think her intelligence, niche humor & social awkwardness to this day make it hard to relate for most people which unfortunately causes them to hate her success. i think people need to go outside lol.. there are worse people & bigger problems in the world

Reddit was designed after 4chan, it's pretty self explanatory why it breeds toxicity so well within non moderated subreddits. The crazy part is trying to under what type of individual sits in a sub reddit and goes down the rabbit hole of looking at every comment and reacting to it. Subreddit like these are confirmation basis, they are probably the last place for a healthy mature conversation. They're so self righteous in their toxicity that they are blinded by it.

Her dark humor is a survival mechanism to get through and is very relatable to ppl who use dark humor to deal with trauma or big emotions. To embrace the concept is hard to do in a way that does not feed the cycle of self-hatred and Communal hatred of her. Owning a bad scenario that is your life/from your own actions instead of barring feelings or pretending it isn't real I would argue to be more toxic for her and the haters. At the very least her self-awareness is nessesary for her to transverse her healing journey and move forward beyond her 20's.

      Yo she is beyond help.
First of all she is obviously now lazy and a slob.. Not even going to hide when her mom comes over that she has a bottle of wine and pill bottles there…
She actually got into a good school with a shot at a really good education/future without faking it to make it so to speak.. AND the way she talks about it right off the bat sounds like she still obviously thinks too highly of herself still..
Straight up says she launched creativity work shops but didn’t actually have any intention of following through what so ever, even sold tickets.
She was upset that her friend “tries to take credit for her writing and make me seem like this ditsy influencer” when 10 seconds prior was stating that everything she said was completely true…🤦‍♂️
So now 9 minutes in she opens up about having Reddit which in the start she said she doesn’t post online, to then purposely find people that hate her and stir the pot.
I’d call anyone a scammer that makes people pre order a BOOK?!?
With how she left that place, anyone would be upset and I doubt a damage deposit would cover the cost to bring that back to what it was when she moved in.
“I’m leaving the internet and moving to tiktok” soo your not leaving the internet.
At the end said she had onlyfans but at the start was upset that people pick apart her personal life.
This video got her money though and I’d bet that she never has to work again in her life, ask anyone or 98% of people though if they never had to work again by choice they would be happy. In the end she is still ungrateful and unappreciative.

I find her to be someone I can really sympathize with, but also someone who's incredibly out of touch who still struggles to take responsibility for herself.
Edit: after reading through some of the comments, I want to say that even if I think she's has wrongs she needs to right, I don't think that makes her an irredeemable person worthy of the dehumanization I see happening. Humans aren't black and white.

I would also argue that it is very human and relatable to be out of touch with aspects of oneself and their contributions in their own life being their's to own and take responsibility for. I think that most people struggle with these things and are putting ppl like her and judging them for not acting perfectly in response. I don't know any humans who are not somehow a hypocrite, liar, and struggle to take accountability for things that feel too hard to do. It's very human to be fluid. Taking responsibility is not something taught or intuitive at all to humans, when the goal is to persurve ourselves and survive. Taking responsibility unmasks the individual and makes them vulnerable which is very uncomfortable to put ourselves in that state of mine, because vulnerability could mean extreme consequences for being real with oneself. I think being hurt when ppl we feel we love and know their morals stray from that even a little, it's easy to forget when the last time we might have modified our values to meet the situation at hand and yet can still hold thos3 values close and be rooted in them deeply. Everyone strays from their compass. Not saying ppl don't need to take accountability, just think that ppl don't see how human it is to do something or say something that isn't perfectly aligned with what they portray is their values and principles. All humans are not exempt from this fault of the wildcard effect when humans choose to be spontaneous and a drift from their "self."

Theres an hour long video up by Dangelo Wallace about her now. But basically, to summarize, she spends all her time wasting peoples money and lying to them about it. She keeps mentioning her addiction so people feel sorry for her, but she accepted a 500k book deal, knowing she never planned on writing the book. Blew it all on partying. Asked people to pay her for a preorder of her book that she still hasn't written. Blew all that money on partying. She comes from a wealthy family, used to literally live in the richest city in america, and would constantly beg people for money just to blow it all on something unnecessary. She even chose to stop paying rent, got sued, and then countersued by saying she was too poor to pay rent. WHILE taking everybodys money and lying to them.
She's basically a narcissist who wanted to be famous for writing a book, but never actually wanted to write a book and lied to the people that supported her financially. Even years and years after her addiction issue was no more. Even now, she finally released a mess of a book (only because she wanted to release a book before her ex friend who she hates for no reason) and had people pay 100 for it, knowing she didn't plan on shipping it out.
She took money from a skincare company who wanted her to be the face of a new skincare product called "snake oil," because shes so known for lying and scaming at this point.
She accepted, for the money. She put these products together on her living room floor, got complaints about her cats hair being inside the product, and then told people they were lucky there wasn't MORE cat hair, inside this 2 ounce bottle of grapeseed oil that they paid $80 for.
She's a narcissist who liked the idea and aesthetic of Cambridge academia. She wanted to be the face or voice of this aesthetic, knowing she didn't want to write a book. So she lied to people about it to take their money and their book deals.
This is so, so much worse and deeper than just buying followers. I completely forgot she did that because it doesn't compare to everything else.

With the Reddit situation - their take seems pretty spot on. She has such an insatiable craving for attention that she's turning to them to satisfy it. If she truly wanted to turn over a new leaf, she'd acknowledge she's lied, used and abused, and move on with her life. She's clinging to the vestiges of the ship wreck that was her past in an attempt to regain the identity she once fooled people into believing she had. Get a real job, a real identity, and get real honest with yourself about your intentions behind why you do what you do, and move on.
Also, she's still making excuses. The guy she spoke with on the phone gave it to her straight - she stole people's money - and she twisted it into "the book's late". Reminds me a whole lot of Amber Heard insisting that she donated money, intentionally convoluting what it means to promise to donate something, and actually donate it. Her whole affect while on the phone with people seems incredibly artificial. The reason people speak about her like she's not a real person, is because she quite literally has always presented herself as not a real person. She has a constructed image and identity and as long as she craves the public's eye, and outlets like Vice help her indulge in it, she won't improve.

Can't. They'd can't do shame, accountability, or consequences when telling a woman's story in mainstreamto alt-mainstream media. Has to be sympathy, pride, attention, or praise or it's not told at all.

The lack of respect is so potent... lack of respect for books, lack of self respect, lack of respect for other's feelings.
The only thing likable about her is... she survived. She has an unique set of bad experience, as she has no options, she should mend it into her potential, wear it somehow as a badge of humbled honour. I sincerely hope she sees better days ahead.

Social media and attention seeking really are forms of addiction. Her closing statement really brings the point home. "I really wanted fame, I wanted everyone to think I was perfect and they did, but being famous didn't make me anywhere near as happy as I thought it would," should be a precautionary slogan for everyone who gets their validation from sources like Instagram. It's all fake, and chasing that high only ends in disappointment.

I wish so badly we can turn back time...
This is a prime example of why people need to socialize live and in person..
And why the internet and social media needs to be strictly limited if not totally cut off from the world's children...
Parents need to unplug the screens and check into reality..

Instead of realizing the real mental health help that these people need from society, you pit all the blame on ,”should’ve known better.” Your lack of sympathy is what will delay the real help and tools that anyone like this genuinely needs.

If you were a kid in the 90s and you flew on a plane you would have fiddled with the ashtray mechanism on your arm rest.
