- On a routine 800km flight from Deline to Fort Good Hope the crew begin to experience a problem when the begin to close in on the landing strip at Good Hope. A major hydraulics issue spooks the crew and they notice that the fluid is leaking out of the airplane which could mean the landing systems won't work.

I worked in an exclusive pediatric office after working in a hospital ER. IT was brutal. The office dynamics were hostile and toxic. They bickered and gossiped about each other, and picked on the weaker employees, or family members in the practice. As for me, I was subjected to "group bullying" because of my weight. when I managed to lose 50 pounds, I was given a card that said: "Congratulations, now we have more room up at the front desk to hire another receptionist! Everyone had signed it. I was harassed so much, I developed an ulcer, and when I tried to look for another job, i was black balled all over town. I would up having a nervous breakdown, was forced to quit with good cause, qualified for unemployment benefits. This doctor's practice sued me in court trying to stop my benefits. I had no attorney to help me, they were a corporation--had 7 attorneys helping me. They called me dirty names in court. Finally and ALJ - who was running the case, stepped to the plate as my advocate and asked the questions I wanted to present--and then the Judge took over and she found in my favor 26 civil rights violations and ruled that I did indeed quit with good cause and deserved my unemployment benefits! She found that I needed a rest and followed my doctor's orders that I did not have to look for work for six weeks while my medications kicked in for severe manic depression.
I did find a new job, in medicine, working not as a medical secretary, or clerk or receptionist--but now on the nursing end, after going back to school. I became a CNA--working on my RN. I was happier! Working directly with patients and taking care of them, this is what I was born to do! I could spend more time hands on helping people! I loved it.
A hostile work environment can literally ruin people. I know, I lived it. Getting hit on the head by objects and called names in front of patients and clients and being shoved around, and nasty notes left on my desk, and being made fun of--being harassed at home when I was truly ill. it was five years of living hell. Biggest mistake of my life was working for that office!! They literally harassed one of my office mates into a heart attack on the job, denying her access to ambulance and care while she had chest pains on the job. I attended her funeral; was aghast that the entire office staff, MD's included had the guts to come to her funeral, none of them spoke to me, but shoulder butted me as I left the funeral! I have forgiven them, as I am a Christian, and tried to forget it. It was 30 years ago now.
Aubrey made the right call. If Buffalo would have cared, they would have done something to ensure she stayed. What a self serving response from the Buffalo people. Blaming her instead of maybe reevaluating what they are doing so they don't lose more people.
Many years ago the FAA did a study of what factors effect safety in pilots...Without going into all the factors, they found that the most important factor was currency. Pilots that have flown more than 10 hours in the last 90 days have a much lower accident rate. After watching ICE PILOTS, it is clear that Joe does not understand this. He exploits new pilots fresh out of flying schools and puts them on the ramp for a year or two. He takes advantage of their desire to fly and gets cheap labor out of it. New pilots should be flying as soon as possible and getting experience in the cockpit. They should not be put on the ramp where their skills get stale and then a year or two later allowed to fly. I would never work for this outfit.

No Mikey, she did not "just quit". Seems like Buffalo is just looking for cheap "Rampie" labour. I do not blame these future pilots leaving. A qualified pilot should be flying a few trips a weeks just to keep their hand in. Buffalo has many planes and a few smaller twins that these Rampies could keep current on. And as for Joe's attitude, 'nuff said.
She was not cut out to be a pilot, way too timid. I’ve never seen a slower learner that her.
@@Rick-C-117 Slow learner because she wasn't given a chance to learn! She had very hours a month that's it. And she had to take some leave because her mother was extremely sick. Buffalo had a part in her leaving and that's the fact of not giving these pilots time to fly. Not giving them a chance to take the control at every single opportunity.

Way overkill on the drama. After literally saying the gear is down and locked the narrator says "but will the pressure hold" - lol does he not understand the concept of "locked"? They make the emergency brake system sound like arming a nuke. Good series, but absolutely ridiculous melodrama. 🙄
How sad to witness a person's dreams slowly suffocated due to unforeseen circumstances outside of both Audrey's and Buffalo Airways control. Even on departure, when it came, I felt she deserved a hug and to be told sorry to see you go and perhaps something along the lines that if things don't work out well for you down south, the door will be open to seeing what we can do for you here. I wish Audrey all the very best with her new career.
She made the right call. If she has the passion for flying she will get more hours South and the opportunity will come.

From the facts as presented, I'd have to agree with Audrey. She was underutilized, with no prospects of getting ahead. Time to move. I hope she can get out of the cabin and back into the cockpit sooner, rather than later!
She wasn't cutting it as a pilot. Being unsure, or even frightened is NOT a characteristic compatible with the cockpit. Some people are better off never flying (as PIC).
@@txman201 you have to understand how women can be raised if in a negative environment. We are brainwashed starting in childhood. Thus self-confidence is never developed. I got mine at age 12 and flourished. Audrey should not give up yet. She is young enough to develop self-confidence. BTW I was born in 1959 and my father was a chauvinist(and sadly addicted to Catholicism). Growing up I got my confidence outside of the home. Got great grades, played sports, was popular, had great friends. I learned to believe in myself. Audrey can too.

This is not a place to learn on the job, to give your best shot, people don't owe you the chance to try something you want to do and see how it goes. You put up the performance, or you're going to be sent packing, man or woman. If you're having issues, get your life straightened out BEFORE you show up for work, an airline is not a counseling center and employers or fellow pilots are not life coaches. And she's not going to find anyone to mentor her, because a man and a woman locked in a cockpit for hours on end is not healthy for the man's career in today's political and social climate.
Audrey is now flying for another operation as a pilot! Kudos to her!

They use a gear type pump for these applications. If the pump gets an air bubble & has a very difficult time priming itself and start pushing fluids thru again. Audrey don't give up on your dream, they are saying that in the coming next few years there is going to be a huge demand for pilots going forward.
If this place is like a family, then it's an abusive family that exploits it's children. I would never work in such a wreckless place. If you come to fly, and are used as cheap labor, of course your gonna leave. The girl had trouble flying because they never let her fly. They should rotate the crew so that they don't lose what they learn. These old plane's are junk, and they only recommend 30 year's for commercial plane's of any kind because of the stress on them from flying. Anyone flying on these old wrecks are nuts. The number of in flight issue's that have occurred are to many.

Watched this series for a long time. I quit too! Rampies should ALL have flying time. Guy that addressed the profit motive above employee training and “stick time” was right on. Joe is a user not an enabler of new pilots. I am older than Joe, I know from experience, that it is nNOT how you treat people working for you. All “carrot and NO “Stick” sucks. I’m done. Goodbye.
It surprised me when Audrey said she had trouble finding landing strips....in broad daylight?? What type of flight training had she experienced to date? Anytime a promising entry candidate is missed over to not follow a scheduled progressive job assignments the disillusion and lack of interest is predictable and THAT is a management failure! I originally enjoyed this series and admired Joe as a true northern entrepreneur. But over the years the ongoing and frequent turnover of qualifed employes became chronic. This is both a hostile and toxic workplace not to mention the working and flying conditions potentially lethal. I hope Audrey's path improves for her sake but you cannot compare a position of flight pilot/crew to that of a flight attendant!

rewatching this... it really disappoints me how they treated her. The lack of empathy for her having to be with family when someone was dying, and to replace her, effectively, during that time and take away her opportunities.... that's not how a good business is run. If it was "family", they wouldn't have done that to her, and caused her change of heart, and caused HER to realize that they did not consider her family.
Just me being cranky about it, but I completely side with her on this, after another watching a month later.
This show is great, the filming is so good, the prop planes are so interesting.For all us old veterans that flew in prop planes it great to watch. DC 3 probably has more safe flight hours than any other plane. Thx

I am a pilot myself , but flying in those frizzying weather conditions is insane !!!

Why not have pilots that fly, mechanics that mechanic, ground staff that... does stuff etc.? Why hire only pilots and make them do non pilot things?
It's called paying your dues and learning the business from the ground up. Even with dedication, success is obviously not guaranteed.
I never pumped gas at the airport but ferrying new Cessna's and instructing was loads of fun!! Then the bottom fell out!

Once upon a time the company staff had to present theirselves to the public. I was the one who had to evaluate their effectiveness. Some could not face the pressure of the visiting public. Secondary positions existed for them to work in. Same old song, some had to leave, some stayed. THIS boss is an untrained chauvinist who has limited manager skills. Will lose others with his attitude.
The "chips" always seem to be down at Buffalo.

Funny labour practices in Canada. Here in Australia you have to give notice of leaving....between two weeks to a month. depending on your pay period. Thats usually on 15th of the month, (two weeks in arrears and two weeks in advance). And if you are dismissed it's the same amount of notice the other way. If they want you to go immediately that have to pay you out. All I can say is that down here, a flight attendant job is not a path to flying. Most FA jobs are with labour hire companies. She is impatient. She's only been there for 2 years. Down here that might be five years of patience, but they would have to give you a guaranteed number of hours. It seems much more structured here.
Also down here a total loss of hydraulic pressure would be a mandatory declaration of an emergency and after the aircraft was on the ground its airworthiness cert is suspended. CASA would impound the plane. When the repairs are done and certified, it has to undergo a new airworthiness inspection and the pilot would have to be rested for a week in case any delayed PTSD sets in from the incident. Judging by the number of failures etc that seem to occur frequently at Buffalo, if it was down here they would not be in business.
The smile she had on her face when she left is priceless. That’s about the reaction I see on most people that make it out of the NWT. I know I was grinning when I finally got out. Lived there my whole life and had nothing to show for it, the NWT will take everything you have and leave you a shallow miserable husk. I’ll keep the memories but I’ll never live there again.
I never trust a bald barber, a skinny cook or mechanics with no teeth
All the pilots should be flying frequently. Grunt work does not count for safety through experience.

every episode Ive watched , there has been a major maintainance issue. Not a chance in hell I'd ever fly in a mess of a plane there. and their "pilot training program" is a disgrace. the FAA needs to shut this circus down

This place appears to have a toxic work environment and one that does not appreciate their employees. I wouldn't blame anyone for wanting to leave that place as quickly as possible, not to mention flying planes that seem to break down on an hourly basis. Just awful.....No wonder the series got cancelled.
The series was not canceled they signed a five year deal in the beginning and then a one year extention because it was one of the highest rated show on Canadian television

As a retired pilot, I think that Audrey made the right call. She is obviously a very caring person who wants to help people and cabin attendant is right up her street. My only concern is how she will react in an emergency situation, because you can't afford to allow your emotions to take control. This, I felt, was also her main problem in flying aircraft and that is why, I feel, that she wouldn't make the cut as a pilot. I wish her well.
You can why they no longer allow to carry passengers. The entire show shows how many times they have breakdowns and put peoples lives at risk

Ernest Gann in his book, Fate is the Hunter, described the C-46 as a stiff legged beast but could carry loads of ice. He said the C-47 ( DC-3 ) as an easier plane to fly but he would rather pilot the C-46 in weather conditions.

Where do they get the parts for these old beauties? Are they still made commercially or do they have to custom make them?
They have to find stashes of old parts, which some people do make a business of. It may be possible to make new parts based on old specs - a big NASCAR team owner has started making parts for P-51 Mustangs, for example.
Keep in mind everyone these are some of the hardest airplanes in the world to fly,these old tail draggers are a dying breed in this world
Well Audrey was neglected by everyone, is this a surprise that she's be sad and leave? Joe or someone in mgmt should've taken her aside and at least ask why she's leaving, they'd realize she wanted more flying time. She also should've met Joe when he was free...not in front of others like that. It didn't have to work out that way, but I guess she might've made up her mind by that point also.
I also thought it was weird and awkward to just go in there and tell him during a meeting. She could have either waited till the meeting ended or knock on the door and ask Joe if they could speak in private if she was in a hurry.

I am glad she is moving on. Pilots need to fly and going somewhere else will help her out. Sometimes moving on is the best option.
Audry is all smiles at the end figuring that learning to be a flight attendant will be a piece of cake and she will be flying all over the place. She needs to look at the vlog from Stella, a flight attendant and hear what it was like when she first started. New attendants get very limited flying time and mostly what nobody else wants. Not my words but Stella's own.

When AUDRY First Arrived at Buffalo She had Preferential Treatment... She Immediately Jumped the Pack ahead of Everyone Else,, and I remember Her saying that She did not Care She was Jumping Ahead... Then She left for 3 Months and when She Come back the Others Whom She jumped were in Their new Position... I call that CARMA...

Audrey is a young woman just trying to find her way in aviation like we all did. The way your father treated her was 100% disgusting. HR would have a heart attack!! You are lucky you come from money and an established company. It doesn't make you above the law. Would you talk to your dog like that? Sorry brother, turning off the channel. Look at everyone's linkedin profile from the show. Pretty much everyone left to go somewhere else. Working in harsh weather conditions at all hours of the night and day, little pay and not so great management. I will say it is one of those jobs that you learn a whole lot but when you leave you get more money and it is much easier. If you can make it a year + here, you can make it anywhere.

I´m sure here in Germany the pilot would be suspended and loose his Pilot Licence for taking of with an Aircraft in this high risky condition
What "high risky condition"? The issue was resolved before the aircraft returned to service.
Well really taking off in an 80 year old airplane is high risk. I know that plane was built to last but still!

I mean the possible malfunction of the hydraulic system.
Who wants to be in an aircraft with only one flap out....of course everey take off with such an oldtimer is a calculated risk, but in this case its an known issu e with the hydraulic system and not a broken position light. Especialyin Germany the regulations are struggeling..beware of flying with out a broker position light !! ; ))

I doubt that any of those men actually bothered to take her aside and tell her how much potential she has. The manager tells camera that all she needs to do is ask Joe for more hours, but did he tell her that? He says she's better than most of the boys there. But did anyone tell her that? Did anyone who supposedly witnessed her struggling actually reach out to her to help or advise? Seems like no. Seems like typical managers chalking it up to "attitude" and not investing time into their best employees. This is a fun show to watch, but every episode proves what a toxic work environment it was. All she needed was some encouragement and good advice, but they left her to somehow figure it out herself while she's not in a good headspace. What a shame.

it's probably better for her to get to another, more modern company. I heard Buffalo weren't flying piston pounders anymore, which is good. Even when the series was filmed, there wasn't much future in checking out on DC-3, DC-4 or C-46. I mean, sure it's cool to have done it and it's a rare thing to be able to say you are a captain on an ancient(in aviation terms) plane, but how is that gonna help you when the avgas runs out?
Audrey should go for the computer that flys. Modern aircraft.

I think Audrey was behind the 8-ball when she first strapped into the FO seat. If she had a mentoring environment vs. unrealistic expectations from the flight crew who would teach instead of prematurely judging, criticize, and not welcome a young female pilot it would have been a different outcome. And come on....an 80 year old plane? Give her a break and if you can, some encouragement. You will probably see her figure everything out.

I'm watching this series for the magnificent old freighter. The HRM sucks and sucks and sucks, including Joe, Mikey and the 'new manager'. Yuk.
Joe complaining about teaching someone and then do not use it, Well maybe if you got her to Use it she would have stayed on but That requires sound logic and reasoning and that is something lacking there.

@@txman201 you are judging prematurely. There are most likely a lot of other factors she was juggling. In time and with more flight hours she may end up as a skilled pilot. Would like to have seen your reactions if you were in her shoes.

At the point any pilot is flying a large twin if they still haven't learned how to spot airports they have no business in the front of the airplane, male OR female. Let me guess, you aren't even a pilot.

They never had to teach you as you were born with those abilities. If memory serves she was in the right seat and we weren’t told just how many hours in total she had plus IF she had training in light singles. Oh my apologies again I forget you’re perfect and have NEVER IN YOUR LIFE MADE ANY MISTAKES is that right? I think you might consider a couple things here. What we weren’t told in the video the extent of her training and that being human we all make mistakes and sometimes one’s training and skills play into it. You might just think about giving the kid a break.
@@topturretgunner I was taught to locate airfields in the first 20 hours of flight training. I'd need to check my logbook for exactly when I started (training) cross country solo travel. A pilot is typically seasoned before sitting in the cockpit of a large twin. She apparently was still insecure after all those hours getting up to that level. "Scared from the get-go" at that level is a massive red flag of having no business in that seat.
So it’s not as bad as advertised. Classic Reality TV…
did anyone expect otherwise? Oh wait, check out the may episode where a plane (different company, same location) crashed and people died some weeks ago. So yes, real stuff happens at times.

Does she really want an airline career? Flight crew or flight attendant? Grandpa should get this girl to Embry-Riddle where she can get a degree and instructing time. Airlines need pilots but a degree helps and so does an Air Force history! Timing is as important as planning and professionalism. I wouldn't waste my time!!
