transcript: Today I’m going to show you exactly how I remove this load bearing wall in this German brick house. 3.2 meters long of this cavity wall is to be removed. This will then connect the kitchen and the living room and also make space for a larger dining area. This is the side of the kitchen and this is the other side of the living room. The kitchen is a long, narrow room and the wall opening is intended to give it a more open feeling and provide more daylight. The double-sided wall with a cavity inside is to be supported with two steel beams. This is clear from the static calculations that were done by a professional, so the correct beams are ordered and delivered in advance. I ordered steel beams HEA-120 (S235). If you pay 20 dollars more, the steel beams are also already treated with rust protection. During this construction, the old kitchen still needs to be used, so I got a construction foil and a few battens. With these I create a separation to keep dust away from the kitchen throughout the construction phase. The ceiling is sheetrock, so simple chipboard screws can be used. It’s easier to use shorter battens and I put the screws in ahead of time, so that the screws don't fall out while I’m hanging it, and it's easier to tuck the foil under. It should also be as dust-proof as possible at the bottom. I tape the foil to the wall with a wide painter's tape. This junction box is located around the area where a steel beam will be installed later. I have had rather bad experiences with cable finders. I turn off the power and expose the cable to see where it runs in the wall and if I can relocate it. Now I draw the opening on the wall. I start drawing in the location of the new steel beams.
