Least we forget Mary Breckenridge. She started the Frontier Nurses to help the mountain people of Hyden. My Dad was born and raised in Hyden and Mary Breckenridge saved his life when he was little when he contracted TB. She practically raise him. So thankful I was able to spend most of my summers in Hyden.

Love Hyden. My Mom and Dad were from Leslie. Even though I was born in Lexington, they would routinely visit, making sure I knew who my people were and where we came from.
Ignited Coyote, absolutely. Nothing tickles me more than to drive the backway from Manchester to Hyden and see all my family surnames on businesses along the road. Very cool. Ignited Coyote I haven’t been home since 2016. You should do another video but of the hospital and the only Hyden Elementary. That would be cool to see Mary Breckinridge’s statue.
My grade school teacher, mentor and family friend was from Hyden and is buried there. Her name was Laura Gibson Hamm. She lived and taught school in Cincinnati Ohio. I want to come lay flowers at her grave and tell her how much of a difference she made in my life, and in the lives of undoubtedly every student she ever taught.
I went through Hyden in order to get to Hazard twice in 2000, yet unlike Hazard and even Harlan, Hyden does NOT have a whole lot of businesses! I mean, it only has two supermarkets! IGA and Save-a-Lot, and it has only three fast food restaurants! Dairy Queen, Hardee's, and Subway! There's no McDonald's in Hyden, nor is there a Walmart! So yeah, Hyden's as much of a small town as a small town can be!
I have family still living up on owels nest miss them so very much my grandfather would tell me stories about him and his older brother during the depression hanging out at the pool hall about 1934-35 racking the balls for a penny a rack but only sometimes because everyone was broke but with those Penny's they could buy sugar & flower from the store for the 9 children family.
I remembered the old dime store on the corner and the drug store next door back in the 1970's. There would be a carnival come around every fall and us kids would have a blast.
I don't think kids today can imagine what a big deal that carnival was when it came around once a year to these small mountain towns, and of course a visit to the dime store was a big deal too 😀 Thanks so much for the comment!
Hyden is very special for me, it was my first video to get over a thousand views! I was in a hurry when I did it, so I left out a lot of good stuff like Dairy Queen and the Mary Breckinridge Hospital, so I'm just going to have to come back and do a couple more videos! thanks for the comment!
Hello Coyote's I love your videos and I was just wondering if you would be able to do a video tour of all the fire houses and their apparatus in your area please? Cheers Marcus Hawkes. Happy New Year.
That's a great idea I'd love to do that! I've got a lot of respect for firefighters and I'm a big kid when it comes to fire houses and fire trucks. if I can arrange something like that I'll be sure to give you a big shout out.
No offense to Tim, but you're right! I'll mention the Osborne Brothers and give you a shout-out for it in my next video I do in Hyden. If you know any historical locations related to the Osbornes I would appreciate any help you can give me. You can contact me at this email Coyotesden2000@gmail.com
Ignited Coyote no worries brother...I spent my summers there, that’s where my grandparents grew up. I know the Osborn’s run a fairly well known college for bluegrass there somewhere in an old school building, might be something worth checking out.
