It’s oversized baggage, when you check in the surfboard, you sign a release of liability form and that airline not responsibile for damages. But good luck with your claim.

It’s not considered oversized anymore! They consider it to be like a normal checked bag since 2019! They dropped the 150 fee and is just charging it as a normal checked bag

Dang I was just about to buy a board on my trip in Hawaii and ship one home. There’s just way more options for used cheaper boards than CA

I sympathize with her and hope she gets compensated. It looks like she packed it in a day bag and not a travel bag though. I pack my boards in day bags inside travel bags and make sure the bags are under 50 pounds. Many of my boards are Surftech Tuflite construction that's lighter, stronger and better for airline travel. That clean break looks like a high impact incident and possibly a weak point in the board. It did happen close to the tail. Unlikely to happen in the middle of the board.
