My sister and I moved to LA/Pas from Arizona a few years ago. We're always looking for new hike spots. But his disappearance was a huge wake-up call that we can't hike here like we can in AZ. The weather in AZ is predictable as hell most of the time - clear and warm. But here the mountains get flash floods through the washes and these insanely fast storms that blow off the coast and supercool when they get tangled around the mountains causing sudden snow. Always always ALWAYS bring a buddy when you hike in a season that could even just rain a little. Weather from the top is always much more intense than at the foothill. Not to mention bears. We get the occasional Javelina sighting or coyote howl in the distance in AZ, but Mt Baldy, Mt Wilson and others in this range have real ass wildlife that live there.
I've read enough of these stories to know that the experts strongly suggest that you don't hike in the wilderness alone, and if you do you take a satellite phone with you. When I was younger and camped in the high Sierra I also took a gun with me to fend off the critters if needed. The two legged and four legged kind. It sounds like the critters got ahold of him, maybe while he was still alive but definitely after he died.
Mt Baldy is a wonderful hike - knowing that you are on the highest point in SoCal is nice. However, the hike does have several areas where it is slippery and dangerous in the dry summer conditions - to make that hike solo during the winter conditions is simply a dangerous trip. Having said that, I often hike alone as many others do…the feeling of being by oneself in the wide wilderness is an amazing one. RIP Julian Sands…
I grew up hiking Mount Baldy, long before hiking Baldy was popular. Keep in mind, the trails above the tree line are not actually trails. They’re not even paths. These “trails” are simply the “easiest” routes up the mountain and/or along the top of the range. You needed some good compass/map skills to navigate with snow on the ground. During a storm…you’re screwed. There is just no chance that anyone could get up there to find you during a storm. Unfortunately, once that storm hit he just had little chance of surviving. Even if he’d managed to make it a night there was just no way he’d have been able to hold on as long as this situation would have required. Nevermind the fact that it took weeks before weather conditions allowed them to start searching for him again.
I live outside of LA & used to go to the resorts w/ family (Baldy, Big Bear, Lake Arrowhead, Mt. High, Snow Valley) when I was younger to snowboard. It’s absolutely mesmerizing terrain, but the last couple colder winters have brought massive amounts of rain & snow. Which is good when it comes to droughts & helps w/ the wildfire season, but we haven’t seen rain/snow like this in *years* here in SoCal. Hope his family finds peace 🤍

As a SoCal resident… you have to understand what a HUGE deal we make of the rain… especially this particular storm… anyone who ventures out hiking is considered mentally unwell. Honestly, people are told to work from home when it rains here! Think about that… and then decide what his motive was.
I think his mindset was that of complacency. He must have thought that because he had done this hundreds of times, nothing would happen to him. It happens far too often.

Those of us who see that white peak looming over the San Gabriels were puzzled why an experienced hiker would ignore the warnings, the weather, and the well-known body count of Mount Baldy. But I may have an answer, as a non-native who moved here not long after he did. The peak claims a disproportionate number of lives, because down here in the densely-populated area between the mountains and the beach, it will be short sleeve weather, but Baldy is high enough to be below freezing, causing clouds that hit it to dump their moisture as snow. And oh, the snow in 2023. Our 20-year drought broke with one deluge after another for months, raising the snowpack in California's central range, the Sierras, to 250% of normal when it's been at 5-10% most years since the early 2000s. The record was 715 inches (18.16 meters). Mountain communities were snowed in for weeks, roofs buckled; people entered their homes through upper story decks and windows. All this was sensationalized on local news, along with the flooding the rains caused at sea level. Sands headed up on a clear day between one storm and the next. He had to know drifts would be over his head, and conditions on aouth-facing slopes could be icy where the sun warmed them during the day only to refreeze at night. Maybe Sands didn't know that when that happens on snowy slopes, the alternating ice, melt and snow layers create cleavage planes, prone to avalanches. Maybe, too, since he moved to California in the mid-80s, he started hiking the countless trails around southern California and didn't tackle Mt. Baldy, one of the most difficult, until the drought began. Every winter I've looked to see if there was snow back on Mount Baldy, but it was always the same color as the lower mountains. Sands may have expected the Mt Bsldy of the drought years, with light dustings of snow easy to traverse. at any rate, it was a shock when I saw his name on the news. I remember Room with a View - the genteel sexual awakening for the more literary, academic, or arts-oriented members of GenX - and his many other roles, especially his character Byron on Babylon 5. One of those compelling not-quite-superstar actors, all the better for not being so. my condolences to the family. While I think it was in advised of him to join the many other lost hikers on Mount Baldy, I understand… California is very beautiful, all the more so for those of us who moved here. I hike alone in Joshua Tree (with a contact who knows to call the park service if I'm late checking in), recharging on its spare beauty and solitude. The real California, beyond the freeways and glitzy mansions and built-up areas of the coast, is healing to the soul.

This is so sad his family has my deepest condolences 💐 May Julian rest easy 😢
At the end of the day, nature will always trump experience. RIP Julian and condolences to his family.
DISORIENTED... not disorientated... I had to correct it due to the rampant misuse of the term :)
Great video regardless.
That's a frightening way to die... I remember him from Arachnophobia.
I used to hike solo in back alleys in SE Asia. In retrospect it probably wasn't wise, I could have easily disappeared. However I never felt in danger or encountered anything threatening. The people I met were always friendly.
I would have thought his body would have been better preserved? With respect,i could never think why anyone would want to venture out alone in anything like this.😥🙏Bless.
Wildlife. They carry off parts.
I never knew what happened to him till this video, but I do love his character he played in the movie "Rose Red"
