I utilize the Smith machine for a hack squat variant as my gym doesnt have a hack sled. It is easier on my back than barbell, I get greater range of motion, and I can focus more on the mind-muscle connection. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Smith machine. This is the just old school gym attitude that machines are junk. I do both the conventional barbell squat and the Smith squat among other things. And when I injured my back, the Smith was a godsend. It was the only thing that I could do relatively pain free, kept me training through rehab.
smith machine squats can destroy your quads much better than regular squats
Evidence?
@@LiberatedMind1 regular squats don't place much emphasis on the quads unless you're doing front squats. A Smith machine is more similar to using a hack squat machine which places more emphasis on the quads.
@@Orly90 Ah okay. Yeah I know about front squats, switched to those myself. Low bar back squats is too redundant with deadlift.
@LiberatedMind I personally hate front squats cause I feel like I'm gonna choke to death lol I rather do goblet squats with a dumbbell.
That’s why I do both squats on the smith machine and Bulgarian split squats.
this is the second time I injured my lower back on the smith machine. I thought it was because I hadn't trained heavily in a while. But I only used 25lb plates this time and still injured myself. Thanks for the info.
Yeah got injured myself yesterday.Skipping gym for a week
When you do them in an angled one, put your feet more in front of you (NOT under you). It’s more isolating and you can go deep.
Only time I touch the smith machine is for shrugs...while waiting for the squat rack to open.
Cbum says he prefers SM squats to normal squats
Obviously barbell is superior but if you have to do squats on a smith machine, it has to be a vertical instead of angled….and you have to squat with high bar technique. Don’t understand why these guys are talking about squats with the bar not midfoot (sissy squats) bc the machine has a perfect bar path when you setup “midfoot” properly
Was going to try smith squats and only did a couple test reps before I realized it’s too awkward compared to free weights
Jay cutler and Yates both used smith machines for squats including CBUM yet these two think other wise 😂😂😂
The average gym-goer isn't Jay Cutler😂
I have lower back problems and I've noticed improvement when I use free weight for squat, but when I use the philip machines my lower back problems return.I believe the philip machines INHIBIT the stabilizing muscles of my lower back..i don't like philip machines at all
Very true.
Tfs a philip machine
Smith machine* 😭
This is the first time I've seen someone mention the leg press was actually worse for the back than the free weight squat. I went from doing low rep barbell squats to experimenting on the machines for hypertrophy reasons, and I can tell you when I started actually doing weights that made a difference on my legs anywhere from the 10-15 rep range, with my back and butt as flat as they could be throughout the whole range of motion, I almost still MURDERED my lower back.
We had another called a "squat press" machine made by Cybex so I tried that. A little better but because it placed my feet higher on the platform it pulled on my lower back even more even at the beginning of the movement, so it still murdered by back to a degree.
They also have a V-Squat made by Hammer Strength. That is supposed to support your back, but as you squat down, the "support" pushes your upper back forward and moves out away from your lower back. It is NOT a natural movement like they claim. That also murdered my lower back.
Now I'm stuck to either going back to regular squats to parallel (lower hurts the lower back) or ???.
I mean they have a couple hack squat machines but they're the pin in plate cable machines and they stupidly start from the BOTTOM of the movement. Not feeling that.
That was why I was here. I'm searching for alternatives but I've just about run out of every one except the barbell squat variations and split squat/lunges.
I'm not feeling the smith machine either.
Have you ever considered you have weak muscles somewhere else and that’s why your back hurts lol? Bc if you’re doing the squat correctly (based on your body comp), your back is not supposed to hurt...at all. I’d say load your core with more weight to actually make it stronger (not look better) and isolate your hips and glutes. Bc if your back isn’t the problem then you’re other core muscles definitely are. Ducking functional movements isn’t going to help your back only make it worse. It’s okay to chill on squatting with heavy weight until you figure out what the problem is with your body.
@@deez9805 It's been a while since then and I came to the conclusion that I was so strong by the time I tried out those machine movements, I piled on too much weight and went too deep.
If I start going below 90 degree squats I get butt wink and back pain and I've done all the exercises and mobility work to try and correct that and I'm just one of those people whose pelvic/thigh bone structure isn't going to allow it.
And while my butt didn't come off the back of those machines, taking all that weight so deep, so early in trying out the movements had my back fighting for dear life so yea a LITTLE bit of it was my fault.
I've since just gone back to squat variations and I am super happy and satisfied. My legs are growing again, my back is happy and I'm happy.
Switched from a goblet squat after tired of holding 70lbs dumbbell and squat at the same time.
Blew out my lower back for a long time with smith machine squats, avoid it if you value your spine
I wouldn’t say goblet squats are better than smith squats because you’re arms are going to get fatigued before your legs will
Omg, doing ANYTHING with bad form is going to result in less gains and potential injury. If it doesn’t feel comfortable, then don’t do it. But I lost all respect with the “behind the head shoulder press” comment. These guys are doing useless exercises, which tells me they are practicing bro science.
If you do want to use smith for squats then do it for Front squats. It makes your front squats safer
do you guys actually lift because your analogies are horrible, the 80 pound Bulgarian split squat and a bb squat are completely different, completely different loading, what is the difference on the fixed plane of a hack squat and the fixed plane of a smith squat,,,,NONE
What kills my knees is the hack squat machine.
I had severe knee pain after doing squats on a smith machine for some time.. Ive never had that problem with free weights
Where were your feet positioned? Feet position can make the difference, you always want your feet in front of you when squating on a Smith.
Well it depends if you were positioning your feet correctly. Ofc the free weight is gonna be easier cuz you can move and arrange your movements but Smith machine helps more because of injury preventions.
Weird, i have the exact opposite
That's because they are free, unlike with the Smith machine, where you have to pay money to Smith.
What do you think of sumo deadlifts using a smith machine?
Mud
I’d avoid it like the plague. I sprained my lower back muscles because of one wrong move 👎🏾. Your movements are too restricted on smith machine. Barbell squats will always be superior.
My doesn't have squat rack I do squats on dip bar
my vmo (tear drop) blew up from smith squats…
honestly this just makes me sad because like . I have knee problems and I jsut feel like what they are saying is wrong........ and im sad idk what to do now
vertical instead of angled smith machine, squat with high bar technique and bar path to midfoot
Lol lunges and squats not on the smith machine have literally hurt my knees and my trainers said I did them right so respectfully I do disagree with these men. But respectfully because people are different.
I don't agree with these people at all I have had better luck with the smith machine
But what I need to do if my gym only has smith and heaviest dumbells is 20 kg?
Change gyms
20kg seriously that's not a gym sorry dude
20kg? That sounds like a gym focused on something like gymnastics rather than weight lifting
@@SonGoku-ep4wj lool Id have to agree
Shitty gym 😂
BARBELL SQUATS OR SMITH MACHINE SQUATS?????!?
dorian yates says barbell squats are a waste of time and that you should use smith machine squats instead. however dorian yates really prefered leg press.
smith machine is fine
They making it seem like you can’t get a good workout on it. Yet people have great results just from the smith machine
@@MelissaLona jay cutler did squats in a smith machine. lee priest did too.
@@vanguard4065 they just have bad form i never experienced back pain from smith machine
@@MelissaLona Their not the worst however don't consider it a compound movement.
@@brentonhickman2739 I currently use it for squats, split squats, and calf raises mostly. I don’t trust myself to use barbell.
Squatted on a smith machine with 300lbs and got folded
