Youre an inspiration Sophie. I bought my 2001 Defender 90, 9 years ago, took take to my home in the mountains of Portugal. It's taken my wife and I to places we would never have seen otherwise and we love our Landy. But, I've always taken it to a local mechanic for every repair. Then I watched one of your videos and you seem so fearless. You'll literally tackle anything. So, now I'm having a go too. A 62 year old man, who's never touched a spanner before. Thank you Sophie.

Excellent videos and project. It's good to see a woman who is clearly doing something like this because she loves it, not using her looks as clickbait. In terms of suggestions, I would be making more use of wire brush on an angle grinder and decoke brush on a drill for rust removal - much easier and quicker than by hand. Also, to remove rust in pitted steel, hydrochloric acid (sold as brick cleaner) is good. Brushed on this will remove even deeply pitted rust. You can follow this with Jenolite for a perfect finish. Jenolite will only convert surface rust on pits, leaving rust underneath. Thus will inevitably activate again and continue to rust.

you do really nice work! I was a little sorry when you started prepping the beautifully galvanized chassis, but I fully agree with your reasoning. And since its an old vehicle, it should look period correct. The chassis is really nice job and very good deal! Your commenting is also very pleasant and your explanations and technical advise are very useful! Build yourself a simple rotisserie, so you can easily rotate your chassis
Hey Sophie, I showed your vids & this one to my mate who owns a smash repairs shop. He was very impressed with the work you've done. In his words, he said you've done better than any of his apprentices he's had over the years. Whoever has been teaching you should be proud of your work. My mate was also saying that he'd have you working on restoration projects. As he said, everything is in the details. I help my mate out on occasions. The project he's nearly completing is a 2008 Holden VE SV6 Ute for a paraplegic who wanted a ute. Making it user friendly was the hard part for me as I had to measure her for seating & hand controls. I also had to devise a remote lift for the hard lid to store her wheelchair in & modify the front passenger seat to carry her sports chair. Again a great video & you should be happy with the hard work you do. As my dad would say, "That's proper champion, that, lass!"

I have a galvanised chassis under one of my 2cvs that I fitted in the winter of ‘99/2000. Back then it was £350 and had a 10year guarantee. Needless to say 20 years on its still in fab condition and 100% worth the money. so by doing this to your s3 is definitely one of the best things you can do.
Yep, while it almost feels like cheating, you can either buy a new chassis & bulkhead, or you can keep patching your chassis & bulkhead until you have a hand-made chassis & bulkhead of dubious quality that is going to require more patching in a few years. Great vid Sophie, looking forward to more. :)
It’s a good video, but it costs £1000s of pounds for new bulk head a chassis, my 90 really could do with a chassis but I’ll be patching it for a good few years yet. It would have been nice to see her fix up the old rather than buy the 2 components, but i suppose if she has the money fair play to her.
@@menditman2004 Great idea with the way she's going about her restoration. The new chassis and new dash panel (bulkhead), when well prepared, will last for many years if Sophie keeps out of the salt water. I drove Land Rovers for almost exactly 30 years. I never had a chassis rust out. I lived with them just outside of New York City, Salt Lake City and Montana before moving to San Diego (where I did play with my Series III 88" in salt water a few times). Each winter I took my L-R to the car was about one a month if not more often. And any time I drove in salt water, I'd wash the Land-Rover off very carefully several times. My wash jobs included spraying water right into the chassis on both sides of the frame rails. (I bought my 1972 SIII 88" NADA DHT 2.25 petrol and drove it until 1992 when it was stolen. I had a Series IIA, 1962 88" station wagon before that; I also had a 1967 NADA 6-cylinder station wagon for 10 or 12 years.) No Land Rover that I owned had serious rust issues. Take good care of the Land Rover, and it will take good care of you. A very nice video. And, Sophie, you are going about it in the best possible way! Congratulations!!
@@andymckane7271 Hi yes I agree it’s the best way, but i would think your talking about £4000 ish to replace chassis and bulk head. I personally wouldn’t spend that amount on a series 3, they weren’t the best to drive and not the most desirable Land Rover (even though in recent years they have become more popular for collectors) . Some one I work for has just bought a series 2 (which I do like much better) and said it’s awful to drive, my 90 and 110 defenders are a pleasure to drive and have that important power steering, but it’s all about personal choice. I would like a series 1 though but it would be more of a museum piece for me (maybe one day I’ll get one).
Hi Sophie. I don't know if anyone else said this and it's a bit late if you didn't do it. But I'll post it here fir a bit if advice fir anyone else that wants to send their chassis off to be galvanised. Open up all the mounting holes in the chassis with a 1/64" oversize drill as the galv plating makes all the holes undersize. Which means when you go to assemble everything you will find that none of the bolts fit and you end up knocking off the galv plating opening up a new rust entry path. I look forward to watching your videos as I have a very low mileage 76 series 3 with an Aussie inline 6 cylinder to restore. I hope to pick up a few hints and tips

I've been working on Fabrication work since I was a kid with my late dad, then 17 years in the Reserves and Regluar Army as a REME Mechanic. I've done countless trailers, Land rovers, Chassis swaps, Welding and Fab Work, Hot Rods etc...I cannot fault her, top performance all round. Nice to see a girl doing it and doing it correctly ...looking forward to seeing more work from her
My fantasy is to build a Land Rover from scratch like this. Unfortunately I don’t have a garage or any outside space, or any tools. So maybe when I win the lottery! In the meantime it will be great to watch your channel Sophie.
Great vid Sophie & great to see the new chassis. Bit of advise, although the chassis are hot dipped galvanised it doesn't always flow into the insides of the chassis every where so it's well worth the little extra time and money spraying inside with waxoil or dinitrol. Will make a big difference years down the line. Most chassis rot from the inside out due to the condensation. Just my experience. Stay safe and keep the updates coming.
Thank you! I will be using the Corroless corrosion inhibiting cavity wax once I take the chassis out of dry storage. I should’ve mentioned this in the video, but I have the applicator gun with nozzles to get in those cavities and box section 😊

Hi Morgan, hammerite make an under body sealant which has added waxoyl in it. I have used it on many vehicles to good effect. Also a company called Frost restoration have some good paint products as well.
Part of learning to weld is learning how to enjoy deep, lasting burns and that things that are very hot don’t necessarily look hot. Also, if you do ever need to modify that chassis, welding galvanised steel isn’t great for your health as a general rule so take care with that

In less than a minute I knew this was an excellent channel to subscribe to! This chassis up rebuild (and what a chassis it is!) looks to be a great way to learn new skills and familiarise oneself with every aspect of the vehicle! I'm particularly interested in seeing how you get on welding as I have recently bought a Mig welder, followed by a (DC) Tig/Stick welder and Plasma Cutter. A Land Rover will certainly provide opportunities for welding, and there's nothing quite like the satisfaction of carrying out one's own repairs (although it may not feel particularly satisfying at the time!).
Galvanising is far better than most people realise. You can have exposed metal on your chassis, and if there's galvanising anywhere near it, the corrosion of the exposed metal will not get past surface rust phase until the sacrificial action of the galvanising in the vicinity is exhausted. A galvanised chassis will last many decades.
great job , lots of folk dont bother with the t wash which is a huge mistake ,, good time to acf 50 the inside of the chassis while you can get round it . Most land rover chassis problems come from the inside , not the outside.
Great stuff. You asked for any product recommendations, so here goes. Bonda Primer is an excellent primer to use on top of Jenolite and I found that using these two products together, they kill the rust and it doesn't come through - 4 years on my MG - that's a miracle.
Looks great. Very wise choice going with a galvanised chassis. As a male though I cringed at the term "Followed the manufacturer recommendation" Us guys don't like reading the instructions for stuff 😅
I recommend you look into more modern undercar finishes. The mines here in Aus as part of the pre commisioning process often treat the undersides with a two part coating to prevent corrosion. As a side benefit it is high build so it will cover the uneven pock marking.
Blimey! Sophie I worked on my first LR restoration/rebuild about 10 years ago and nothing I manged to do got anywhere near the level of skill and attention you are using, there are many of us that would love the skills you seem to pick up with what seems to be an inherent knowledge (perhaps inherited!). The devilbiss FLG gun is a great starter gun to be using! i also agree that the more work you put in to protect the metal the longer you can enjoy the jeep down the line. Good work
Arc is good for heavy stuff, Mig is good for lots of stuff, Tig is great for small parts and exotic materials, Tig paradoxically makes your Mig welding better, keep up the practice and you will be patching up chassis in no time lol

Prep is often overlooked so great to see you taking the time to do it well. I learned to weld (self taught) years ago. Mig is so much easier than stick but good to know both. Take care welding galvanized metal. The heat produces zinc oxide fumes that are toxic so deep grind the metal through to the steel. If you see a white fluffy surface to a weld its zinc and will need to be ground deeper. Well done for all your hard work.

Great video. My galv 90 chassis is on order. I have had the paint (same as yours) in the garage for a while but stated to question whether or not to paint the new chassis. Having seen yours I’ve decided to go ahead as planned, however it’s going to be quite a few weeks to achieve an ambient of 18 degrees. Plenty of other tasks to complete in the mean time.

Well done on a job well done. I've yet to do a Mordant wash on my 90 galvanised chassis. Then I'll be using Buzzwelds GIO chassis black and WAR inside the chassis and all hidden cavities.

Get a cheap Garden Gazebo to cover your work area, its what i did, and really helps in the great Northern British weather :)

Galvanising is far better than most people realise. You can have exposed metal on your chassis, and if there's galvanising anywhere near it, the corrosion of the exposed metal will not get past surface rust phase until the sacrificial action of the galvanising in the vicinity is exhausted.
A galvanised chassis will last many decades.

great job , lots of folk dont bother with the t wash which is a huge mistake ,, good time to acf 50 the inside of the chassis while you can get round it .
Most land rover chassis problems come from the inside , not the outside.
Great stuff. You asked for any product recommendations, so here goes. Bonda Primer is an excellent primer to use on top of Jenolite and I found that using these two products together, they kill the rust and it doesn't come through - 4 years on my MG - that's a miracle.

I recommend you look into more modern undercar finishes. The mines here in Aus as part of the pre commisioning process often treat the undersides with a two part coating to prevent corrosion. As a side benefit it is high build so it will cover the uneven pock marking.

Arc is good for heavy stuff, Mig is good for lots of stuff, Tig is great for small parts and exotic materials, Tig paradoxically makes your Mig welding better, keep up the practice and you will be patching up chassis in no time lol

Prep is often overlooked so great to see you taking the time to do it well. I learned to weld (self taught) years ago. Mig is so much easier than stick but good to know both. Take care welding galvanized metal. The heat produces zinc oxide fumes that are toxic so deep grind the metal through to the steel. If you see a white fluffy surface to a weld its zinc and will need to be ground deeper. Well done for all your hard work.

Great video. My galv 90 chassis is on order. I have had the paint (same as yours) in the garage for a while but stated to question whether or not to paint the new chassis. Having seen yours I’ve decided to go ahead as planned, however it’s going to be quite a few weeks to achieve an ambient of 18 degrees. Plenty of other tasks to complete in the mean time.

Here’s a tip when painting. Thing’s you don’t want paint on. Give those areas a thin coat of grease or vasaline.

Well done on a job well done. I've yet to do a Mordant wash on my 90 galvanised chassis. Then I'll be using Buzzwelds GIO chassis black and WAR inside the chassis and all hidden cavities.
I don't think I have ever commented on any youtube videos before. But, I just had to say how amazing these videos are! Your knowledge and understanding even down to a technical level is more than impressive, great job! We have a series 1 in storage that needs to be restored and your down to earth and can-do attitude is a massive inspiration to me to get going with it! Can't wait for the next videos!
