  • P0171 and P0174 Error Code Fix On A Lexus ES300: There are a few different things that can cause a P0171 or P0174 code. But if there is no symptoms in the drive-ability of the car, it’s often just a dirty mass air flow sensor. In this video, I demonstrate how to diagnose the problem with a scan tool and then I demonstrate how I carefully clean the wires inside the mass airflow sensor on a 2001 Lexus ES300 with a 3.0L engine. This will also work on similar Lexus and Toyota years, models and engines with a similar MAF sensor. The beauty of this repair is it required no parts. Many dealerships and repair shops might simply put in a replacement mass airflow sensor, but I always give cleaning it a shot first. And this works almost 100% of the time. Yes, if you’re doing this car repair DIY, you might actually be able to do this fix for free. Rather than replacing the mass air flow sensor, try cleaning it to save yourself some money. Watch, learn and save!

    I had these codes on a 2002 Highlander (1MZ-FE)...ran through the MAF procedure per the Service Bulletin (EG-5014) and MAF was out of spec (had previously been cleaned with no effect). Replaced and life is good.

    So if I'm only getting P0174 then it's likely not the MAF? I bought a used 2003 ES300 that had the vac connections on one of the VSV broken off and instead just routed around it and then into a closed loop and one of the connections on the Air filter box (the one that doesn't go to the vacuum tank) was broken off and the vac line that was supposed to go there was just hanging free, not plugged up. Basically, the entire vac line system was nowhere near routed as it was supposed to. Whoever had it before me just kept playing musical chairs with the vac lines until it'd run.
    I followed the vac line routing diagram under the hood and repaired/replaced/reconnected everything to where it ought to be but it's still idling like shit and it gets pretty sluggish at times. I have a code for the knock sensor on bank 2 as well but I didn't think that ought to cause drive problems.
    I do have an ODBII reader that connects to my phone so I can access information while it's running, what should I be looking for to help narrow this down?

      Check your fuel trims. Short term and long term. Check at idle and at 2500rpm no load. High fuel trims at idle are most likely a vacuum leak. High fuel trims at 2500rpm are fuel delivery issues (fuel pressure low, clogged fuel filter, dirty fuel injectors, etc). Check fuel pressure and check for a clogged fuel filter.

    I have a 03 Lexus ES300 throwing codes p0171 and p0174 , I didn’t want to try to clean the mass air flow sensor so i bought a new one but my Lexus is still throwing both codes does anybody have any idea what I should do next to fix the problem being that it wasn’t the mass air flow sensor???

    My 99 Lexus ES300 has the P0171 and P1153 code and also goes into limp mode at 3rd gear. Is this a case of needing a new oxygen sensor and also a new MAF sensor? If so, which oxygen sensor do I need since there are 4 in this car.

      Generally the two top ones control the AF mixtures. One per bank. The lower will calculate efficiency on the cats

    Can this code also set off a P0446?

    • @MechanicSecrets
      @MechanicSecrets  2 года назад +1

      The p0446 is an evap leak code. That is an unmetered vacuum leak code and can cause a p0171 or p0174 code. If I was diagnosing a car with p0446 and lean codes p0171 p0174. I would start looking at the evap lines / hoses for vacuum leaks. Check out our other video on Toyota evap p0442 code to help with finding evap leaks on Toyotas here: ruclips.net/video/-iLiBT0sQJ0/видео.html

    My numbers are -20 and 30. Since the numbers are so high does that indicate a vacuum leak?

    • @MechanicSecrets

      Need more info. Are those freeze frame data or live data? Is that at idle or driving?

      @@MechanicSecretsupdate:
      2003 Lexus Es300
      I had 3 codes. P0171, P1074, and P0430 (Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshhold Bank 2).
      I was about to clean the MAF sensor and replace the air filter.
      I had recently replaced the 2 hoses that connect to the air filter box and throttle body. (Not sure their name). So I didn’t think there would be a crack there.
      My live stream data read about -22.3 LTB1or so and 33.4 LTB1. My bank 2 readings were just over 10% difference as well.
      I was a little unsure since in this video I didn’t understand well enough to know what it would look like if there WAS a vacuum leak. I just knew my numbers were much higher.
      As I was about to take things apart to change the air filter I noticed a small hose in the front left corner of the air filter box was unplugged.
      I had already unplugged the battery because I have some 0 gauge wire that gets in the way. (I have a HO alt). Which cleared the check engine light.
      I plugged the little hose back in and wanted to see the difference. In live stream data the numbers are in around -16 and 17 only about .3-1% difference now.
      I drove the car around about 65 miles. Check engine light hasn’t come back.
      My only question is why are my numbers in the teens and these ones are around -3% and +1?
      What does it mean when the numbers are higher?
      I have an idle issue I haven’t been able to solve for 2 years. It rests at 400-500 rpm. The key trick doesn’t work.

      Is there such a thing?

    • @dennismelville7532
      @dennismelville7532 Год назад +1

      Yes there is... CRC is the manufacturer... it's a gray can specifically designed for cleaning MAF sensors! Usually if that doesn't work.. replace the sensor.

    • @bigsneakypete
      @bigsneakypete Год назад +1

      @@dennismelville7532 I’m not saying crc spray cleaner was to blame but I used it on my 1999 es300 with 258k and then soon after is when all my drivability issues and p0171 showed up. Bucking and hesitating at 2500-2700 rpm. I checked the MAF again to maybe clean it again and found green corrosion slime dripped from the MAF, I’m guessing the chemicals caused this ? Or old age I really don’t know.

    • @dennismelville7532
      @dennismelville7532 Год назад

      @bigsneakypete hey... I never said the spray caused the failure.... but definitely, if you found a substance on it.. that's more likely caused its failure. That's just the same as spraying a sensor and turning on the ignition same time as its wet... bound to burn up a sensor just like touching a halogen bulb with your bare fingers, and turning it on and the bulb blows. Or, with the high mileage... it was probably time for it to be replaced.
