We have had 3 Black Labrador Retrievers in 32 years married . Our dogs have kept us active and have given us more love , money could never buy . And yes we are successful .

I had been left 6 rehome dogs by my adult children, who then went & got other dogs
I said yes when they & I wer young & healthy
    Years pass &
I have 2 left now one at 18 blind & death & one at 4! I have loved these dogs very much
But it is a full time job & expensive venture & a sore heartbreak with sickness etc hindsight would have been wonderful but I just felt sorry for the poor dogs!
Now I realise they kept me living through tough times just as I helped them!
My adult children never learned anything out of this!

Matthew, you are spot on! We rarely think about the impact of our decisions. Thank you for the reminder!

The compounding effect of choice is fascinating and a significant way to look at simplicity Matthew - Thank you.

So wish I had listened to you years ago. This is a message I will definitely listen to again and again and share with my friends. I bought my first condo at 65 and if I had listened to or read your message before then, I would have made a different decision. So insightful. Thank you!

I have a habit of adopting dogs. Have had 7 in my lifetime. This last one(Millie) totally turned my life upside down. I love the dog, but maybe next time I’ll slow down a little.

Its just the same with a cat, except there are litter box changes....and yes we thought we were adopting the young healthy cat.
We previously adopted a senior cat, and we knew what we were getting into. This time I was not ready. Even though our cat passed away in 2019. I now have a chronic pain condition and my mind swirled with how complicated having another cat, especially a young one could become. We missed having cats, and my husband had so many pets at one time living at home. However; most of those pets were not ultimately his alone. He shared care with his family . Our cat is ours alone and with me not working plus having physical challenges there were finer points I couldn't communicate to my husband that would complicate our lives.
Long story shorter version. I can very much understand this lesson today and love our new cat, but I wish I would have said no. Because saying yes to the cat is committing financially to so much more. We live in an apartment so we couldn't choose any other kind of pet, either a cat or none.
I'm not getting hung up on that, I'm hung up on is there enough love and room in my heart for her?By saying yes to her and all the energy /money put into her care am I saying no to God's Will in other ways, using what little extra we had to care for a cat instead of giving to another charity supporting God's Children? I can't get around much on my own anymore, having a pet is an extra creature for my husband to drive around or arrange someone else to care for when we can't. The little energy I have with my chronic pain condition that is so new to me is being using to take care of a young cat,who we will be committed to for many years now. They often live to 20 or 21.
Saying yes to 1 thing ,does mean saying no to so many other beautiful ways of doing the Will of God.
Those are important questions to ponder this Advent.

Had to laugh at this. I am the weird person who thinks of all the little things and it drives my family crazy. I laughed because when we got a dog we went over in great detail what it really meant, including all Matthew brought up and more. I think though that my life is complicated because I see every detail. Nothing is ever just a quick decision or a spur of the moment event in my world. There are always nuances to consider and alternatives to work through. And yet, even with all that, I often get it wrong. I am learning in my later years to just let some things go and trust Jesus but it is a tough road and takes a lot of prayer and just being without doing. Life can be complicated, Matthew, when you do consider all the aspects: for those of us who consider too many aspects. I am learning life needs a balance and it is very hard to create a balance. If you have figured that one out I would love to see a video on achieving that balance: between thinking of all the aspects and stop thinking and make a decision.

Oh yes, I know that story about a decision to get a dog and not tell anyone about it until you hear the yipping sound of a 6 week old beagle at the bottom of the kitchen steps very well. This story has haunted me for 16 years because my mom made the decision with my dad thinking that I would be around during the day to take care of the little scamper. A college kid isn't thinking about taking care of a dog or even a kid. Taking care of a kid is also another 1,000 million decisions that roll into whether you want to spend so much time changing diapers, losing sleep, and worrying about missing an exam because you overslept rocking a fussy child to sleep in the middle of the night. God gave us counselors and advisors for a reason, but he also wanted us to go to him in prayer. He wants us to be at peace in our life, and this is what makes it wisdom.

Matthew, now that you’ve opened this can of worms and helped us realize we’ve made ourselves slaves to a million decisions, actions, chores, upkeep, costs, etc. what do we do? I hope you’re planning some follow on videos on how to walk back a complex life without just throwing your dog to the curb 😜 but ok if that is part of the solution I guess. And how do you walk it back when you know you need to and are carrying a heavy burden but others you live with don’t see it the same way. @matthew Kelly
