  • WITB - This week's classic clubs include a set of George Nicoll "Pinsplitter" irons, were they Britain's most popular irons? We also take a brief look at the George Nicoll brand.
With these clubs, can I improve on last weeks dismal display of golf?

I have earlier set of this model with pyratone shaft and dotted face, which chews up my modern balls. Lovely looking clubs. Enjoyed video. Thanks.

Love the honest videos including good an bad shots and scores unlike other channels showing only pars and birdies!

      Thanks KVG.
I'm just trying to show that an ordinary golfer can enjoy playing old school blades, even if I do hit some bad shots, but I'd still hit some bad shots if I was playing modern cavity backs!

Bought some old irons at a 2nd hand shop and there was a pinsplitter in with them, you have got me looking for old clubs now, love your content.

Great, the more people appreciating and playing the classic clubs of yesteryear the better!

Thank you for taking the time and effort to produce this series! It’s refreshing! I’ve really enjoyed the advertising and history you’ve incorporated into the videos. I also appreciate your sense of humor and ‘honest’ approach to the the rounds you’ve shared. What a great way to showcase your collection and share your passion for the game! I’m glad I accidentally found your videos and will continue to follow along!

Really enjoy this format, Nick, very interesting and informative. My Pinsplitters have the Pyratone shaft but lined faces - I put them in the '30's but maybe just post war? Yours are in stunning condition. You are probably right about being the most popular of all time. Master Model named clubs perhaps more prolific but the head design changed through the years.

I knew and briefly worked for a Mr Derek Ferns from Monmouth a company director who bought the rights to use the name "George Nicoll golf company" many years ago, not sure what happened after he retired as a director and owner of pro deal golf monmouth he had an amazing collection of old golf clubs that he showed me.

The George Nicoll company was acquired by Swilken in 1982, who went into receivership in 1995, would it have been around that time that he bought the rights?
The name is now owned by the Saint Andrews Golf Company, who still operate creating replica clubs and souvenirs.

I've got my Dad's old Q model pinsplitters (pyratone shafts and dotted faces) in the garage and was wondering what to do with them as I am moving house and have 3 other sets to accomodate, none of which are as heavy as the pinsplitters. On examination there is no 9 iron - so only 2 to 8 and a Z model wedge :-( I used to lend them to a friend when we playing around 1980, me with my bladed Petron Impalas. He still used to shoot about 6 over with the pinsplitters even with their weight and slick grips.

If they're Pyratone there probably wasn't a 9 iron, the 9 was reserved for the putter in earlier numbered sets so you most likely have the full set. If you're looking to move them on then ebay is your best bet, although I'd be interested myself as since making this video I've moved my set on to a friend. (I recently acquired a set of Petron blades that I'll be featuring in a video soon.)

@@ClassicGolfClubs The bag only has 13 clubs in which made me think there was one missing - maybe its the sand wedge then. I've put a message on the Golfwrx forum about getting rid of them but if you want them - are you 'Jiggered' on that forum by any chance, and the Petrons are Tour Custom irons ? They look really nice if so - a bit like Ben Hogan Personals with those coloured lines. My first clubs were Petron Impala - bladed not the later improvement ones. Pretty decent clubs really.

@@AndrewDCDrummond Jiggered is my forum name on WRX, I'll drop you a PM on the WRX board so we don't end up with a long chat here.

What do you think about the George Nicoll Centennial blades set by swelkin? I have seen new old stock that looks awesome!

    • @ClassicGolfClubs
      @ClassicGolfClubs  7 месяцев назад

They're a very nice looking set, limited to 200 sets I understand. They look very similar to the MacGregor Jack Nicklaus Muirfield irons which are very well thought of.
I haven't seen any in person but I thought that they were made by Nicoll, what makes you say they were made by Swilken?
