    MY AMPUTATION STORY:
    • HOW I BECAME AN AMPUTE...
Fourteen years of pain and failed ankle surgeries brought me to 2018, when I made the difficult decision to become a twenty-seven-year-old below-the-knee elective amputee. This channel is to document my journey of amputation surgery, recovery, and reclaiming my life.

My friends are often astonished when I tell them how expensive a new leg is. I got hit by a car and my fake leg was destroyed. Fortunately I was not otherwise hurt. The driver wanted to settle outside his insurance. I told him that would be fine, but I'd need a lot more money that what he was thinking. He sent the claim to his insurance, and the adjuster was sure I was trying to gouge them. Even when I sent them the costs they refused to accept it. I invited them to contact any prosthetist and ask what the cost should be. They did, then finally decided to settle.
They honestly did not expect it to be nearly $20000!

I sort of understand their surprise but oh the other hand this is America. Our healthcare system is for-profit and super high costs are the norm. You'd think an insurance company would have learned that.

    • @erictaylor5462
      @erictaylor5462 3 года назад +1

@@Otherwise88 Well, the high cost is not simply because of the American health care system.
It's more about the economy of scale. Have the skills to make a fake leg are high. It takes a long time to learn. On top of that amputees are less than common, so there is not a real high demand for those skills, or for the parts to make them.
All of this boils down to a high cost for each person who needs it.

Personally, I enjoy freaking people out. One of my favorite was to do this is when I'm skiing. You come up to a steep hill "Black diamond" where people are standing at the top looking down, trying to build up their courage and you pass them and drop in without hesitation.
I love when people say "Holy shit!" when I go by.
I would not, however, leave your old prosthesis sticking out of the trunk of your car. If you do the police get really really excited and point guns and start yelling.
I did cause an accident. Once I was riding in a van with some friends. I pulled my leg off and held it so it looked like it was attached to me, then had a friends spin the leg around and around as if it was hard to do, while I thrashed around pretending to scream in pain.
We did this for a while, until the car next to us ran into the car in front of him.
I wonder what he said to the police, trying to explain why he ran into the car in front.

Hi Jo! My son was a patient at Shriners Hospital in Springfield MA. That is their orthopedic and prosthetic hospital. My son has a club foot and we have had braces and custom inserts made for him over the years in the same department where they make the prosthetics for kids. That hospital is AMAZING! We have not had to pay for anything out of pocket, and he had major inpatient surgery on his right foot/leg when he was a baby so he can walk and stand. The people there are a the sweetest as well. My son is now 20 and they have been treating him since he was 9 days old. P.S. that is him in my profile pic graduating high school. 💜

Hi, thanks again for answering my questions 💜
If you do end up making a video about mental health stigma from medical professionals (since you did answer it in here so I’m not sure??), could you also address how that affects the more physical problems please? Like if for example, they’re ever dismissive and attribute everything to having mental health issues, or stuff like that? I’d really appreciate it if you could! Thanks :):)
Edit: sorry I just relistened to that section and you did address that, sorry idk why I for some reason I forgot. My mistake. Sorry!

I really am at loss, honest. I dunno what it was if so. If I said anything wrong somehow? Please forgive me. My comment just poofed. I admire your drive. hugs "waves"

So sorry, missed you live!!!!! Was exhausted, husband was printing documents which meant I had to keep going and assisting, which disturbed the dogs. Everytime my bottom sat on the sofa it was like whoosh a little voice saying, and"Can you help me." Urghhhh! Think its a man thing not the mobility issue he has. Would a woman put a printer on a bed, on a duvet and expect it to print wobbling around. No we wouldn't. Ha!!! And if we're the so called fairer sex, they are the Dafter.........
