  • Our fist Czech Republic vlog outside Prague, this ones in Frenstat pod Radhostem where my ancestors lived in Czechoslovakia! ⬇ Click 'Show More' ⬇
My (Dane's) family are originally from Czechoslovakia, which then split into Czech Republic and Slovakia. After working through our ancestors history and family tree we traced back a location called Frenstat pod Radhostem where they lived. This vlog is us on a travel mission from Prague!
We made our way to visit Frenstat pod Radhostem and hunted down the small village center before finding my ancestors house from the 1700's!

I live in Prague, I was born here so I can't see it as beautifully as you guys do, because I'm used to it. But it makes me so glad to know there are people who enjoyed this beautiful country to the fullest. History, nature, culture - it's worth it and I thank you for this video, it makes me proud to be part of this country.

The best way to track down family roots is to go to local church, which has birth files, going back centuries with names and details.

great video :) :) just small detail .. If your familly lived there in 18th century (1700-...) then they didnt live in Czechoslovakia .. they lived in the Bohemian (Czech) Kingdom and Dutchy of Morava ... in this century we was part of Austria-Hungary Pact and "modern" Czechoslovakia was founded in 1918 after the Great war (or 1st World War) by Tomáš Gaurige Masaryk..our 1st President . but thats only detail ... enjoy the Czech Republic and drink Czech beer :D :) (not Kozel ... its worst beer..) :D :D :)

Very nice video again! I'm happy you did not just stay in Prague, but that you also made a trip outside of Prague, a pity that you did not visit more towns, castles and so on. The Czech Republic really has a lot to offer.
Otherwise, only the old people could help you in that village, but they do not know English. Old people have old books, photographs, they can remember names.

We did the same type of thing in Croatia. My Croatian relatives took me to the Dalmatian coast slightly to the east of Zadar to a little village called Rovajnska where my grandfather was born. There's a whole bunch of Roncevics there and also a church with a whole bunch of graves of my ancestors.

You guys are so cool! I really like your vlogs! It is a pity that you didn´t have more time to explore other parts of Czech country. Prague is so tourist, but above all, South Moravia- the wine region with the Pálava Hills, the town of Mikulov and the Lednice-Valtice area, lots of ancient fairytale castles all over the county - Bouzov, Zvíkov, Karlštejn, Křivoklát. And the cities of- Český Krumlov, Kutná Hora, Telč, Litomyšl and more...all monuments of UNESCO world heritage! And the nature of our national parks is charming! You must definitely come back! Cheers, I love you!

Great vlog! You really got across the feelings that you were going through at that moment of finding the spot where your relatives once lived. You may have thought of this already, but there are bound to be local historians or public photo archives that might have photos of the town back in the day, so at least you could get an idea of what the place looked like then, if not find a shot of the actual street the family once lived in.

I have sumbled upon your Czech part of vlog and watched all of its episodes and I have to say I love your way of experiencing countries. As my fianceé would say, you are not tourist but travellers. Not only moving from one tourist sight to another, but willing to enjoy the place, to go outside from city centre (saying that I was surprised that you experienced mostly overpriced restaurants :) ). And seeing you travelling across the country to small town was delight. Total different perspective, more genuine I suppose :) Thanks for your travel vlog, your style of filming is great and can't wait to visit New Zealand in a few months as a honeymoon trip :)

I’m from the Czech republic. These books were removed from churches after the war and are stored in the designated local town halls at the office called “Matrika”. I think that now, when they’re in a contact with the local person who is searching for her ancestors herself, they already know this stuff.

Very cool journey today! I especially love that small town center you discovered. I imagine the people were very laid back there? Too bad you couldn't find anyone that were either distant family or someone who knew about your family and/or could share stories passed down thru the generations. I guess that was a very very long time ago so its hard to find but that's the best part of researching family roots is when you get to talk to people and hear interesting stories. Very nice!

Good job on figuring out the exact place. Back then this place was part of the Austrian empire, hence dual languages with German and Czech. My family also made a family tree dating back to the 16th century, but it was much easier for me to visit the origin since they all stayed in Bavaria for hundreds of years lol. Fun fact...there's "Příbor" town direction on a blue sign at 2:19...that's a birthplace of Sigmund Freud, the famous neurologist/psychologist. Příbor has about 8400 inhabitants and there's a renovated Freud birthhouse/museum open 9 to 5 all week except Monday, entrance 40 crowns if you're still around. I havent been there though, so don't throw stones at me later:P

Absolutely lovely video - I used to travel to Czech villages often (I taught ESL to village kids) but haven't been out of Prague recently, so nice to see exploring off the beaten path and with such an interesting angle, to find where your ancestors lived! If you're still in Prague now & have any questions about anything, I'm a walking tour guide here and would be happy to help :) (anyone reading this is welcome to ask too :P) I love showing off my beautiful adopted home, so let me know if you want to meet up for coffee or an informal tour - I think Prague has a lot to offer beyond the Old Town & Castle (though those are great), like Holesovice, Zizkov, or Vinohrady :)

I'm from Europe and I know it quite well, so I look forward to some Asia or NZ videos later. But... never expected you to go and dig your past in some remote Bohemia village, hahaha... so that's cool. I'll keep watching and you guys stay awesome.

Since you are in Moravia now, I suggest to stop by in Brno. its sort of student city, very chill, much less turist and you can find some great modern architecture like vila Tugendhat. very close by is a karst area, with macocha gorge and possible boat tour in Speleothem caves. and if you enjoy castles, there is just plenty around, such as Lednice - Valtice castle - park complex.

I don't know if you are still in CZ but if you are absolutly must try "Svičková". I think you already had, but pilsner urquell is one from the best beer in czech. Most people don't drink coca cola often, we have czech alternative "Kofola". And in shop you buy czech wafer my favorites is "Tatranky" or "Fidorka" they cost like half euro. Sorry for my english :) and Honest Prague Guide have amazing videos about czech. :D

Nice video, just one historical fact... Your ancestors couldn't be from czechoslovakia if they left in 1800's Czechoslovakia was from 1918 till 1993, so your ancestors were from Moravia (eastern part of Czech Republic) which belong for thousand year to kingdom of Bohemia (Western part of Czech Republic including Prague), and Kingdom of Bohemia together with Markraviate of Moravia were parts of Austrian empire in that time. :)

So you're actually an Österreicher in the end ;) Frankstadt unter dem Radhoscht. [Franshtut pod Rahoshtem]. Let's say Frankstown Under Mt.Radhosht. You do look like a guy from Czech Republic :) No wonder you like to wander around. The very first hiking club in Bohemia was founded in Frenštat in 1884 which "(re)discovered" most beautiful parts of the Beskyds. It seems there has been a long tradition of sporting activity such as skiing, volleyball, football and horse riding in Frenštat. That explains a lot :)

As you said in some previous videos... Many people in Czech republic cant speak english. The truth is that old people were learning russian (because of russian occupation during 20th century) But Iam sure that almost 100% young people will at least speak a little bit. Most people (uder 30y) can speak english. And lastly your ancestors lived in Austria-Hungary (In czech part). Czechslovakia was established in 1918 after WW1 and dissolved in 1993 to Czech republic and Slovakia

Pavlicek is super common name in this area. I can imagine, if part of your family left in 19th century, now like a half of the town and area around generaly could be your relatives (if they stayed in one place of course, you know, a lot of wars have happened a people generally move because of them).
