1988, when Sarah Chen released 3 albums, was her magically productive year, but also the most dangerous and vulnerable time of her career and life. This video introduces the background of the 1988 CD version of Sarah Chen's "Bonjour, Sadness" from the November album "Tomorrow, Will You Still Love Me?", her second Mandarin album of the year.
Sarah Chen was in peak form, collaborating with peers her age, and was pleased with this work. This was a year before the storm of "Dream to Awakening" swept through Taiwan. The album's mood was lighthearted, with hidden pranks and playful elements, making it Sarah Chen's most colorful Mandarin album.
Many listeners consider this album Sarah Chen's best. However, in the 2003 documentary 'A Letter to Sarah,' the producer indicated that they had tried to write songs based on Sarah Chen's personal life, though she disclosed little. This questionable production approach, along with hidden pranks, makes us hesitate to endorse the album. Nonetheless, Sarah Chen's singing was impressive, and the songs were beautiful. Many considerations let us rate Sarah Chen's farewell album "Forever, Sarah" as her best.
"Bonjour, Sadness" is buried deep in the CD; it's a fine song that continues the storyline of "Tomorrow, Will You Still Love Me?". The title song describes a man leaving the woman early in the morning, asking if she would still love him. The question made her realize that he was emotionally vulnerable, and she sang about how hard it had been for her when he would often come and go in her life. "Bonjour, Sadness" continues that story, with her more determined not to be part of his "clumsy script" when he's got a wandering heart.
