With the smoke and everything it looked like an artillery shell had dropped right next to the dumper, leaving a smoking crater, and I imagined the dumper on its side going... "Medic... medic..." Thanks for the vid, and happy for you the track is now complete :)
+truebluekit It was a fun way to spend our wedding anniversary week, we learned a lot from the experience and the track is in daily use and standing firm (contrary to what some of the armchair commentators might suggest!)
My 2 year old boy absolutely loves this video. He calls it Karen reverse and requests it at least twice a day.He knows it word for word now and he reenacts it with his own dumper and digger toy. When we see a dumper out in the car he shouts look mum Karen reverse!!He also makes the noise when you speed up the video slightly! His name is Frankel and if you could do him a follow up video that would make his day!!
+Carla Smith I had to smile at this and am amused that Frankel enjoys the video so much. The track was completed 2 years ago (and it's still standing - despite some of the comments here from the 'experts'!) and all the hired plant has been returned so no follow-up, I'm afraid. There are 1,200 other videos on my channel though. :o)
I can't believe what you have wrote Carla. I also have a two year old boy who loves this video he also does the fast forward noise! I know the video of by heart " karen go backwards! " im sure I say it in my sleep lol
I cant believe this clip is still going strong. My son used to watch this on repeat. 17m views. I just remembered it now over dinner and he said "Karen reverse"! And were now watching it again. Brilliant
True. Tipping the dumper was a wake-up call and we were lucky. My husband jumped off quickly as it began to tip but I was suffering with a back injury at the time and less mobile. I might not have been so lucky.
A skid-steer would have been faster and done ever step of the job including compaction . (1) load bucket (2) carry (3) dump. (4) spread and use as a dozer to push or drag down high spots . (5) carry load & do not dump until full compacted , let the weight in the bucket help in the compaction .This machine quicker in all aspects of the job and cheaper and safer !
yeah I was thinking that to you can also drive it back while your lifting it. saves you time by spreading the metal out.just drop it down at the same time you reverse back.
I had to google that! It looks a better option with a lower centre of gravity but I haven't seen them at our local hire centre. The track is now complete and we learned from building it, both good and bad.
WTF you can pall that dumper back over with the digger!!!! An as for thats the only machine on offer for self drive hire LOL you could get a 20 tonne machine an 9 tone dumper on hire for self drive all you need is the hired in insurance that comes as a package from the firm. i operate plant all the time an its a little small for the that sort of job but fair play for doing it with that size machine.
We live in a small, country market town and this is the largest they supply. Larger towns may have more choice. Anyway it did the job, the track is complete and only viewers of this video saw our red faces. We did learn lessons though and are more safety-conscious now (or at least I am!).
rossrabbits Always nice to experiment and do the job yourself - but really you should have at least had a bit of training... while it's amusing to see a dumper upside down, it could have been a serious accident that wasn't funny. Having grown up and lived and worked near Ross for many years, and still having friends and family in the area, I know there are several hire companies offering much larger machinery on self drive in your area - try J R Maddocks, or Taylor Tool (now part of Hales) in the Forest. Sorry but the excuse that it was the largest machinery on offer in your area is simply not true, and I'd suggest you do a bit more research before your next project... If you want putting in touch with experienced local operators with their own machinery I'll be happy to help you next time :-) Still well done on getting the track completed - not bad for your first attempt...
***** All you say is true and we agree there could have been a serious accident. We had no training, no previous experience and neither of us are manual workers so the whole project involved learning on the job. BTW Although we lived at Ross at the time, the land isn't in Ross and this was the only plant available at the time and able to access the site via a narrow lane. These videos were intended as just a diary of how we spent 2 weeks during the summer.
***** All you say is true and we agree there could have been a serious accident. We had no training, no previous experience and neither of us are even manual workers so the whole project involved learning on the job. BTW Although we lived at Ross at the time, the land isn't in Ross and this was the only plant available during our 2 weeks off work and also able to access the site via a narrow lane. The track has survived and we won't be repeating the work. These videos were intended as just a diary of how we spent our 2 weeks holiday during the summer.
+Phil Caldwell Yes, I'm one of them but this was my first ever time on a digger/dumper and there was no practice run before being filmed! I did improve throughout the week though.
luckily no one died, but this kind of video is the very reason why you cant just get on a machine and start working, they need a minimum of experience and knowledge to use safely, i can assure you if the rops bar comes down on your ribs as you try to jump from a tipping machine you could easily get killed. next time hire operated machinery, they will do the job in a third of the time, and safely. usually for less money too, especially after the lifters were repaired on a dumper thats running on its side smoking
Mission Dan We accept that we were lucky there wasn't a serious accident or injury but we learned a lot from the experience. We should have been offered training but there was none and we were left to work things out ourselves. The track is secure and stable, used regularly and we look back on this week as the perfect way to spend our wedding anniversary!
Tipping that over on its side isnt a big deal... Should have been able to right it with the mini-escavator...But I would have took all the shit back to the rent-all and got a good skidsteer or bobcat....way less dicking around...but...gotta learn some how right?
jabba974 You're overlooking the fact the digger was on the other side of the new delivery of stone so no chance of reaching the dumper until it had all been shifted. Eventually a passing farmer kindly helped us out.
My first comment was rather rude but after reading this was your first experience i deleted it and decided to say i hope you learn a valuable lesson from this, get some help from someone who knows what they are doing next time fella, you could have been seriously hurt or killed, I'm glad you were not!
You had to read something that told you this was their first experience? :D Their equipment choice was a dead give away. No one that knew what they were doing would play around with all this equipment when a CTL would've done everything by itself in a minimum of half the time and been way cheaper to rent.
shrillcarder Yes, we did learn and we accept that we were lucky there wasn't a serious accident or injury but we learned a lot from the experience. The track is secure and stable, used regularly and we look back on this week as the perfect way to spend our wedding anniversary!
Very true. We'd never used one before. It was delivered by the hire firm along with a digger and roller and we were left to work out what to do with it all.
very nice my nephew loves to watch it. He called the old man his grandfather. So,great.

You could see from the start of the film you are not machine man, numpties. Just lucky no one was hurt.

Lol why didn't they just get the truck to back down the drive and trail it? ☺

rossrabbits oh buggar. That does make things tricky then ☺ fun little machines tho I wouldn't mind having a play ☺
next time just rent a skid steer loader
