This is such a tremendous song and Kevin’s voice is absolutely perfect in its narrative delivery. Ironically it’s such a shame he never got the recognition that he deserved.🎶😎
Probably the best song about never quite making it in the music business. It's a shame this talented musician never broke through in the United States. Gorgeous and autobiographical. Singer/songwriters...take notice!
He may not have broken in to the USA as you say but over 50 Americans have covered this song including Sonny Curtis and Mac Davis who reached number 15 and 22 respetively.
Oh Kevin, the Big Queens lander, you are incredible - the best song for the best years of my life. I am a diehard Maroons, you will be remembered - good one mate. Your song here reverberates with the movie Paul Hogan in New York.
'Two song repertoire'! One song repertoire would have sufficed if the single song was this wonderful song. Indeed by penning and performing this most sublime , ageless, sentimental and most brilliant of songs Kevin Johnson disproved his own lyrics : he is a star. Having grown up (and grown old - who is that old man staring at me from shop windows) with this song I can assure Kevin that he was always one step beside me and equally beside the countless rocknrollers who identified with the 'loser' character but also loved the superb tune and those great guitar riffs. The song remains as popular as ever with a certain age cohort of Irish rocknrollers (in part due to the great evangelical work done on behalf of the song by the legendary Irish broadcaster Val Joyce!) and will always be one of the great classic pop songs about popular music. Potent but not cheap! Well done matey and great after all the years to see you 'performing ' the song. Declan McCormack (who did his bit as a print journalist to spread the Rocknroll I gave you faith!)
Declan, that's a wonderful, heartfelt comment. I share your sentiments about growing old and being all the richer for it because of Kevin. (Ron -Perth, Australia)
wow! I always just thought Mac Davis had written this song. I like Mac's cover, but I believe I like Kevin's original cover of it here. Good music! A big thank you to my friend Tuks for this lovely share.
So iconic my best pal Kelvin James and me busking around Croydon .He always dreamed of making it.Even hired Fairfield halls .With Peter Sarsted for a one night stand .
i love this song, i first heard it with changed lyrics to fit the 1996 AFL theme song titled 'Aussie Rules I Thank You.' It is adapted really well and version with altered lyrics really resonates with me as a fan of the game, but the original lyrics are fantastic too
It's funny; I have loved this song for decades, and I always presumed (erroneously it appears) that it was Terry Jack's song, partially from the Susan referenced in the lyrics...
I remember this well and liked it. Sorry, but Mac Davis corrupted this song, particularly by changing the words to the cliched "I'm just a simple country boy...."
The Best Song by none other than Kevin Johnson❤
Most of us give listening to music the best Time of our lives! Countless Time you enjoyed too
one of the greatest songs ever written
Love this song… never grows old❤
What a fantastic artist Kevin Johnson was.
One of the greatest songs ever written, so melancholy, touching the deepest reaches of our souls.
An underrated credit to Australian music history.
Wunderschönes Lied mit einem wunderbaren Text!!!
Remember when you were young ? Look how time fades away.......Great song.
This is such a tremendous song and Kevin’s voice is absolutely perfect in its narrative delivery.
Ironically it’s such a shame he never got the recognition that he deserved.🎶😎
Actually over 50 people worldwide did cover versions of this song including Mac Davis and Sonny Curtis.
Einer der besten lieder die Ich je gehört habe

I was the guitarist on this session. Acoustic with lead guitar overdubs. Good working with Kevin.
RIP, Sorry I never got to meet you.
And you played the theme of 'Country Wide' which I always loved. Am I right?
I still miss our Watson's Bay catchups, mate...sleep sweetly.
Rory You lucky bastard. Beautiful job mate. 👍🏼

I ladored this song the first time I heard it. It deserves far more airplay than the crap they feed us today. Great effort Kevin!!!

@@happyolddude Yes, & I heard he actually did pretty well for himself. He looks so much like a good Chris✝️dan, doesn't he!?

This song gives me a lump in my throat every time I listen to it, such a beautiful song/tune - pure class....
Some of the best lyrics ever written.
one of the songs that will stay forever..
Immer wieder schön es zu hören 👍
Undoubtedly Australia's best songwriter. Was introduced to Kevin with the song Over The Hills And Far Away in '74.
I thought I loved Terry Jack's version until I looked up the original singer. Glad I did. Timeless!
Toller Song...
What a fantastic artist.
truly a great song

A classic like Don McLean's American Pie and Ritchie Valens's La Bamba!

G R E A T
Wow man who was the star then?
the single entered Cashbox Nov 10, 1973.. the original a year before Terry Jacks version
Colin Sanders I remember the Terry Jacks version
It's funny; I have loved this song for decades, and I always presumed (erroneously it appears) that it was Terry Jack's song, partially from the Susan referenced in the lyrics...
poor suzanne i feel for her brill song love it
Sounds like a cool dude... If someone told me Don Williams' vocal style was influenced by him I'd believe it.
So true!
What a great artist & song, is he Australian??
Yessir, from Queensland.
He lived at Tungamull via Rockhampton in Queensland. Fabulous songs. This one is a classic.
@ugizzat
that makes it good.
and it is good.
it tells a story and has a very good tune.
I had this longer version on mainstream records in uk
Kevin Johnson releasing a Christmas C.D.? Rock and Roll I gave you ? ( 2019 )
@ugizzat
You gave it all the best years of your life?
I will never be a star
Then I got a job with road service.
Very depressing.
pentru Ema
whare are you
aint that the truth.
I remember this well and liked it. Sorry, but Mac Davis corrupted this song, particularly by changing the words to the cliched "I'm just a simple country boy...."
Every cover of this song ever done ought to be banned. They're an insult to the mastery of the original.
I have heard a version by Cajun singer Doug Kershaw which is great but not a great as this the original.😊
unerreicht !
@TrainSpotterX Over the hills is ten times better then this song
Agree it is great too. Over the hills and far away is a much more philosophical song pertinent to everyday life. Kedron Brook is also a favourite.
