Hi Swizzyinsg, I do fully agree that Singapore may not have some of the things, but boring place no no is depend on what you want. I got friends from Norway after working here for few years he decided to have kids. And he told us that his wife and him decided to make Singapore their second home.
Wherever you go, racism will always be there. Of course you're seeing at the view of an expat, not in Singaporeans' shoe. It is partly due to government policies that results in the influx of foreigners coming into Singapore to work. You can do some diggings in forums why Singaporeans absolutely detest certain groups of people, especially those who brought their own culture that doesn't fit into our social norms or referring people from their hometown to 'steal' works from locals via their own interest group or getting companies that can help find ways to get a permit easily. These are just some of the factors that partially contributes into it.
To understand racism among Indians from India, you must understand their caste system. The "upper" caste will never respect the "lower" caste and they bring along this mentality to any country they visit. It's worse when they reside in that country. They even look down on the resident Indians.
Growing up in Singapore in the 90s, we have moral education as a mandatory subject in primary school, kindness campaign on the TV screen and ads everywhere. For generations, people growing up in Singapore are encouraged to be considerate to others. Rather than racism, foreigners from other backgrounds, or people who were not influenced by the spirit of kindness, are more likely to experience discrimination, or feeling out of place when they are excercising their perceived human rights, and believes social harmony should be inclusive of their behavior with no awareness that they are being intrusive. When in doubt, just ask nicely. If we ask sincerely, I'm sure there will be people who are willing to explain whether its racism or perhaps a habit that is affecting the people around.
I love my country. I dont earn above 4k, i dont own a car, i live in HDB n i get to travel n the food is cheap. I just cant stand the weather. Not too bad but 20-28c max better...
Living in Europe ..Winter is not for me. Spring is season of allergies. Summer is dry n hot n Autumn is miserable. Racism in very subtle ways towards me. My skin is so thick now that I fight back. But Buddha says I must have love n patience w all races. Glad you are happy in Singapore.. lots of positive energy 😊
Thise of us earning more also dont get subsidies. They r for helping poorer ppl. I also suffered racism during covid while walking around d neighbourhood. Indian expat men n even wonen looked down on me as being female n low caste! We chinese dont have caste, it depends on ur profession, whether it helps or harms others.
Another reason is the cost of education for foreigners' children. It cost $20,00 to $50,000 a year per child. For adventure, we can always take a short trip out of the country.
Language is an issue for most foreigners. People in Singapore speak a local dialect--Hakka, Hokkien, Teochew, etc. There is A LOT of small talk at the wet market, on the bus, at shopping malls, etc., just less in English. Why judge local norms and languages through English? Malaysians, the biggest immigrant group in Singapore, have no issue with small talk using dialects. Racism is less pervasive in Singapore than other countries due to excellent political leadership, but it does exist sadly, particularly towards blue collar workers.
hi, its been a while since you posted your comment, but if you see this i wanted to ask that if i take the initiative to learn mandarin will that help me interact better with the locals and understand and adapt better to singapore's culture and way of life? also which chinese dialect is most commonly used
Another reasons. People with dependent Pass cannot work anymore, lots of Family came to Singapore with one salary hoping that the other partner will find a job and they find out that it is becoming almost impossible. Many expat wives are having a hard time dealing with this and at the end they end up leaving.
Regarding finding partners in Singapore, i would say that its quite a dividing experience amongst the expats community. My expats friends have foundd partners in the local community, while those who dont find local partners find it hard to get a partner here. So making compromises to integrate into the local community might be required here. (And a smart policy for integration imo)
Unfortunately, racism happens in all societies and this is true for Singapore and racism do exist among locals. The racism most people experienced in Singapore are usually non-violent where it is more common in the Western world. Also sometimes it is not necessary racism, but xenophobia, which is probably more likely the case especially if it has do with foreigners, for example even local indians might dislike India's indians or even local chinese might not like China's Chinese due to cultural differences. However we have strict laws against racism and xenophobia which you don't see that being uphold in many countries around the world. It is impossible to get rid of racism and xenophobia because these are social issues that will persist due to different individual perceptions and values, however it can be minimized through education and civil laws.
Quite interesting that people feel that time flies by due to the lack of seasons... personally I feel that instead of the weather, the different holidays and festivals mark the seasons... eg Christmas, New years, Deepavali, Labour Day, Mid-autumn Festival
To those leaving Singapore for the reasons you mentioned, I'll say "thank you" because so many are dreaming of coming here. Each country has its good and bad sides and honestly those unable to appreciate the good here just need to experience somewhere else. Perhaps they should make a list of the pro and con and they might be surprised by the results. In any case, those a people coming in a foreign country and wanted the country to adjust to their needs and not them adjusting to it. They understood nothing about living in another country then...
some of the comments are valid and are known before they came. Some are quite weird like does foreigners expect subsidies when they are not exactly not low earning, are they? Racism is everywhere...Singapore is probably not severe but just my opinion

I can understand why there’s no subsidised on housing because some foreigners will take advantages . Locals will face issue. There are a lot of properties already owned by wealthy foreigners here. As for owning a car , I personally view - is not necessary. Public transport save u a lot of money than owning a car. Car Maintenance is a big issue, why 10 year validity because certain model cannot get spare parts. Do a bit of math n you will understand. As for racism, why only India voice up and not others race ??????.
Having a car is quite troublesome in SG if u are not always traveling to places not covered by public transport. U need to find a parking lot and backtrack to pick up your car. You can't just go to nearby mrt to continue your journey. Of course one can't live without a car in USA, as there is little or not public transport in some places. When u r here, u need to adapt. U gain some lose some. Those reasons are all valid depending on your priorities. Swizzy becomes ambassadoress of SG. Try to explain things that westerners esp Europeans don't understand about SG. People here do engage in conversation with strangers just for your info. Some races are more sensitive in SG. SG is not for everyone.
If I am a foreigner, I will love SG. Cheap public transport and hawker centre food is affordable. Very safe and clean As a citizen, I am not happy because high costs of cars and property.
Our govt is only trying to attract certain ppl into Sg, so obviously it’s not a place for many others… especially those who are not so rich, not fluent in English, without the needed qualifications, who love nature and adventure….as a Singaporean, I’m happy living in Sg, the hot weather and the good food and if I want to experience other places I can travel…
1. Well of course Singapore cannot give subsidies to foreigners for house purchase. Singapore is so damn small. If people start owning house so easily than where are Singaporean going to live.. sigapore is not a place to for a lot of ppl to begin with but our gov is pushing their luck. 2. I would say if anyone needs a car, they are families..otherwise the train is easy to use in Singapore. 3..Most older.generation are so racist mo matter their race.
imho the true reason is still cost. rent increase 50% n healthcare too. guess as foreigner has to find way to manage e.g. company subsidies healthcare. with regard to indian racism, it cuts both ways. i dealt with indian IT professionals for 25yrs. they were ok , humble n willing to learn but the last 5 or more yrs, quality is bad n quite a lot of super arrogant type. also opposition has drum up sentiments against them.
Foreigners coming to work in Sg needs to buy a good healthcare insurance. After working here for some yrs try to apply for or status. That will b helpful to your pocket.
What do you expect from a v small country like Spore. Please be aware of the smallness, weather etc. Racism is everywhere. Whilst i was working in UK. They blatantly looked you n pass nasty remarks. Sidney same too. As a Chinese, even the sales person looked at you in a very unfriendly gesture. Certainly as a westerner life wud be better in yr big countries with beautiful landscapes. Though S'pore is v small but it has safety, good governance, food n transportation. I won't blame them for leaving as they hv good reasons for wanting to find a partner etc. All the best!
It is a situation everyone facing no matter where they are. Different people have different preference and expectation. It is perfectly for them to leave Singapore if they feel it is not the country for them. Anyway there is no perfect country. One thing which is a bit disturbing is "expats feel that they do not enjoy the same benefits as locals". Well if they want the same benefits, just apply to be a Singaporean. Those who feel that way merely wants the best of both world for themselves. They are not genuine in wanting to be a Singaporean. So good they leave.
For most of the white collar class, it's not racism but prejudice against Indians. If Indians want this to stop, then build a better reputation. 1. Want Singapore to be more like India. I don't goto your house and want your house to change right? Why have all houses the same, that's boring and abit rude. Honestly, the Chinese and Koreans do the same. Integrate and don't open up mini little Indias and little China. We don't do ethnic diasporas in Singapore. Hence, we love our Malay and Indian Singaporeans. 2. Don't practice meritocracy and instead just wants to hire their alma maters because of friendship. The first contact for a job isn't the government job portals, but their contact list. Fill the job first, then only look for candidates on the government portals. 3. My tenant would only wash their clothes once in two weeks and in this weather, the laundry basket stinks the entire place. Another tenant would cook rice and instead of throwing the rice in the rubbish. Empties the pot out of the 7th storey window. Life is complicated enough. We don't need more challenges. Just get with the program.
Well 😅 everyone do have their own choices pick what they like and want where they want to stay, looking a partner is not easy, now have so many types of app fb, ig can date online, i had saw someone who date online and got married 🎉. Well it’s May had some scan inside, you also have to be careful on that not because you need to find a partner to get into blind date 😂😅. If you are only willing to date Westerners or within your race...complaining the dating scene here sucks...is not quite valid. What do you expect? Singapore is an Asian country in Asia, of course the dating pool will be predominantly Asians. It is like an Asian moving to Europe and complaining about the dating scene there because they only want to date Asians in Europe...
As a malaysian and having a singaporean sister-in-law and born in johor, i hv some inputs about singapore. Some good some not so good. 1. The size will be a restriction to expand. Reclaiming the sea is not going to help long term. So singapore needs johor land as well as land reclaimation. 2. The people generally are not too friendly. 3. Cars are extremely expensive there. This can be a positive or negative point because public transport becomes efficient. 4. Food is so so

The 4 Singapore myths : 1 Competitive economy - sorry, no. It's a state run enterprise with government regulator operating as for-profit competitors. But SG hasn't produced an innovative business or product in about 3-4 decades. The biggest companies are just knock-offs of other countries ideas. 4 Rule of law. Car Maintenance is a big issue, why 10 year validity because certain model cannot get spare parts. Do a bit of math n you will understand. As for racism, why only India voice up and not others race ??????.
Thank you for sharing☺️😇
Racism and sexism are really just daily life in SG. Singaporean don't think it's a problem.
Yes, chinese treated as first class citizen. All other race considered as 2nd class
some fools come, some fools leave, many fools still wonder why. 🤭
😉😉😉
Yes that is true. Thanks for sharing!
If I am a foreigner, I will love SG. Cheap public transport and hawker centre food is affordable. Very safe and clean
As a citizen, I am not happy because high costs of cars and property.
@@steventay5834 yes agree!!
Our govt is only trying to attract certain ppl into Sg, so obviously it’s not a place for many others… especially those who are not so rich, not fluent in English, without the needed qualifications, who love nature and adventure….as a Singaporean, I’m happy living in Sg, the hot weather and the good food and if I want to experience other places I can travel…

it's not easy to feel the racism or sexism if you are from the west. People will treat you differently.

@@honeygoseyney2421 thank you for sharing!!
imho the true reason is still cost. rent increase 50% n healthcare too. guess as foreigner has to find way to manage e.g. company subsidies healthcare. with regard to indian racism, it cuts both ways. i dealt with indian IT professionals for 25yrs. they were ok , humble n willing to learn but the last 5 or more yrs, quality is bad n quite a lot of super arrogant type. also opposition has drum up sentiments against them.

There is one race that is terrible. So we dislike them. U can't blame us.
Thank you for sharing☺️

If you are only willing to date Westerners or within your race...complaining the dating scene here sucks...is not quite valid. What do you expect? Singapore is an Asian country in Asia, of course the dating pool will be predominantly Asians. 1. The size will be a restriction to expand. Reclaiming the sea is not going to help long term. So singapore needs johor land as well as land reclaimation.

The 4 Singapore myths :
1 Competitive economy - sorry, no. It's a state run enterprise with government regulator operating as for-profit competitors. You're not allowed to compete against or overshadow the government run businesses. They own the market and they own you too.
2 Multi-cultural - sorry, no. Run by Chinese who put Chinese first. Walk into any board meeting or public board and you will notice this. Multi-ethic, OK sure.
3 it's innovative. This is what they say. But SG hasn't produced an innovative business or product in about 3-4 decades. The biggest companies are just knock-offs of other countries ideas.
4 Rule of law. Not really true when the judiciary is elected through the state, independence of the judiciary is highly questionable, the courts are just another wing of the government.
