Legendary has been the only Hollywood studio to get it right so far and Toho praised them for it, TriStar fouled that up the first time Hollywood was ever given the property. At least Legendary's music score was intended to be something new while honoring Ifukube's music, a "hack" wouldn't do that.
Going in I knew that there going to be a Godzilla reference in this movie, but I had no idea that they were going to be playing the original Godzilla theme. That made seeing this movie worth it, amongst other things.
gojifan 95 yeah I read that they used Kiryu in the book, but didn’t know that they used an actual design from the Heisei series. But yeah looking at the poster now, I can definitely see it.
When Mechagodzilla showed up I turned into a little girl squealing in my seat. And for a few seconds I was hoping Godzilla himself would show up, or even Ultraman. Yeah that was hoping too much but seeing Mecha-G fighting was the absolute joy! That scene made me feel like a kid again. Spielberg still knows how to make magic after all these years.
Ultraman is in the novel, and he was supposed to be in the movie, but Spielberg wasn't able to obtain the rights to using him, so Iron Giant was used instead.

My theory is that the mechagodzilla we see, while having some nods to past incarnations, is going to be the Monsterverse version, assuming they make that jump.
*@Ethan Steffek* MechaGodzilla isn't going to be in the MonsterVerse, _Ready Player One_ is a Warner Bros. movie, not Legendary. The tone being more grounded in reality, they want the MonsterVerse to feel believable and so far it is (the "Kong Skull Island" comics introduces mystical elements with the Iwi's "special healing medicine", but that's another $20 bucks), and adding MechaGodzilla to the mix just won't work. These movies aren't being made for the fans, they are being made mostly for the general audience and they're the ones they have to consider the most since they are the ones that puts the money in the pocket. They are the reason why the MonsterVerse has been successful so far, and they are the reason why we even have the cinematic universe in the first place. We fans will buy it immediately, no problem, but the general audience won't, and if MechaGodzilla seems too outlandish for them, then Legendary has a problem, and unfortunately support from the fans is not enough. Just remember that they're selling kaiju movies to western audiences, that task alone is hard enough as it is.
Okay, originally I wasn't going to address this topic since it had absolutely nothing to do with my original comment. But MrAwesomeness360's reply to Ethan Steffek's reply has made me want to throw my three cents into the mix. A. The MonsterVerse is a joint venture between both Warner Bros. AND Legendary Pictures, not just Legendary alone. It's not inconceivable to think Mecha G's appearance in "Ready Player One" could've been a possible tease for what's to come in the MonsterVerse or even a test run of how general audiences would react to such a character. We literally know nothing of what the future of the MonsterVerse is after "Godzilla vs. Kong" in 2020. Thus I personally feel we shouldn't say definitively who will or won't show up in future installments of the series assuming there are any at all after 2020. B. They're bringing in a mythic moth god (who's confirmed to have at least one temple in China dedicated to her) and a three headed dragon from outer space (though to be fair that last part hasn't been confirmed to be carrying over into this series of films) for "Godzilla 2" in 2019. If those kinds of characters can be introduced into this series, I don't see how a mech/kaiju born more from science fiction than either of the previously two mentioned kaiju can't be a part of the series. True, while the series may have started off as more grounded, that doesn't mean they can't expand out their ideas and mythology any further. Look at the Marvel Cinematic Universe. "Iron Man": A movie based more in technology vs. terrorism as opposed to "Thor", a film that came a few years later which introduces characters from NORSE MYTHOLOGY. While it was clear the original vision was to try to be more grounded in "Godzilla2014", it's also clear the vision for the series as a whole is starting to slowly move away from that. Or that's how it comes across to me with certain decisions made for "Godzilla 2" and even some in "Kong: Skull Island". A series does have the possibilities to change, adapt, and evolve over time. I mean, a lot of the big ones have in several different ways. You have a 2017 teen drama movie based on a silly kids show from the 90s that mixed cheesy Japanese fight scenes with "Saved by the Bell" type character scenes together for an insane idea that probably shouldn't have worked, but it did. You have an incredibly cheesy series of movies from the 60s and 70s about a flying, fire breathing turtle being adapted in the 90s for a trilogy that kaiju fans call the "Dark Knight trilogy" of kaiju films, as well as among the absolute best the genre's ever had to offer. The same principle can be applied to Godzilla himself, who's had to change and adapt a many numerous amount of times in one way or another along with his franchise. Finally, I do believe general audiences could become more accepting of SOME (only some, let's not kid ourselves) of the aspects of the Godzilla series and the kaiju genre as a whole if it is introduced in as smooth and as natural a transition as they could possibly pull off. That same principle as been proven true for other series in the past. I see no reason why the same can't be true here in this case, especially since the idea of giant monster movies (modern ones at least) could be bunched in with the more high-concept blockbuster movies we get today. That's how I feel on the subject.
MrAwesomeness360 you sure they said that for the monsterverse as a whole or just for the Godzilla 2014 film when Gareth Edwards was directing it before there was even a monsterverse ? Cause you need to remember we are still in the early stages of the monsterverse with only two films in so for all we know that whole realism thing could be out the window when Godzilla 2 touches down.
Holy shit I was so shook from the fact Mechagodzilla was on screen that I didn't even notice the Godzilla theme played! Now I love this movie even more.
akr ogn Not really. Poster MG-II looks like an exaggerated version of showa MG, which was done to keep the look of movie MG-II a suprise for the opening. This one looks like its own separate design with a few references.
This has to be one of my favorite Mechagodzilla themes, even though it's more of a Godzilla theme, and yet I still love it so much and it gives me chills when I hear it
Douglas pipes, who is a regular for the director of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, will probably use some variation of the theme. He LOVES doing homages, and will almost undoubtedly use many themes for the movie. If you don’t know what he does, listen to his Soundtrack for Krampus, which the director of G:KOTM also worked on (watch the movie too, it’s great.)
Yeah that's what i found so impresdive about this scene. In the book it's Kiryu, the Mechagodzilla from the Millenium Films. But i assume, Warner Bros. somehow couldn't get the Godzilla license from TOHO, so they just designed a whole Mecha based on their own Godzilla, which doesn't even exists in the Monsterverse until this point, but most likely could in near future. That's quite clever and a pretty big effort the movie. Now if the Monsterverse ever goes that far, they could even reuse that Mechagodzilla, so RPO will remain accurate. Very cool thing if you think about it. 😎

SUPERTOHOREMIX I can agree with that
The actual American Godzilla movie couldn't even get the original theme.
I bet not. Legendary Studios would force in their own music. bunch of hacks.

Oh ... no ... its godzilla everyone RUN !!!
No heart morphs into Godzilla theme Pokémon movie 8
Admit it... this was the best part of the soundtrack....
First time I watched the movie I was like: Woah,a mechagodzilla reference cool
Then when I read about mechagodzilla and watched the movie: *HOLY SHIT IT HAS SOME OF THE GODZILLA THEME IN IT AND HIS HANDS GO SPINNY-*
Best part of the whole damn movie.
This version of the theme 😍
