Part of me is devastated and disturbed just thinking about this story. The other part of me keeps finding it harder and harder to feel as awful for the passengers as more information about the submersible they paid that much money to climb into. Like they really do everything possible to avoid paying taxes but will spend that money for a trip in a tin can that's uncertified and depends on a video game controller to maneuver the depths of the ocean just to be able to brag they kinda saw the Titanic in the darkness... then when things go wrong, the taxpayers will probably end up paying the millions that went into the rescue efforts.
@@alexl1289 if they were poor they would be in a situation that happens to millions of other people, hence we wouldn't get a sensational story about their individual situation. This story isn't interesting because the people affected are rich, it's because it's unique.
I hadn’t stopped to think about this much before now, the more this story goes on and the more I follow it and think about it, the more it just makes almost zero sense to take that risk and go down. We are humans so we don’t turn our backs on a rescue because of money. But, in the end the company should have to foot the bill, especially given the corners they were willingly cutting. 😢
For a submersible to go anywhere near this depth, I'd like to think they'd at least have it tethered to the 'Mothership' by a cable capable of lifting it back to the surface.
It's a couple of billionaires and a couple of millionaires on the submarine. If they're alive they pay for it. If they're dead their estates pay for it

Great idea to secure Captain Marquet for a professional opinion. He is very knowledgeable and gave solid comments. I must say I fully agree with him,... visiting the Titanic...what the point? Are the risks worth it?
I have no understanding that the vessel was not certified and has no permit to transport paying tourists. OceanGate is a US registered company. I wonder what regulations we actually have implemented for such vessels and transporting tourists, if any.

How much money is being spent finding these five people? Seems like an ethical question of what else can be done with this money to save 1000 other lives
This was just an ego trip gone horribly wrong… first off that submarine was still in “experimentation process” wasn’t even certified by coast guard standards. Second, there’s little to no emergency protocol in case of something like this happening… Major lawsuit guarantee at the end of this dark lonely road. Condolences to the families.

I believe the billionaire and the other passengers families will be getting a bill. Or, call off the "rescue" now, like the expert said "how many lives could have been saved buying mosquito nets or vaccinations."
Why would they be getting a bill? If this was a navy sub and the families of dead sailors got a bill there would, rightly, be outrage! Navy submariners volunteer too, and they know the risks. The kit is there already, it’s just about the fuel getting there, surely the navies of the US, Canada and France can carry that?
Yeah, sorry, but there is nothing insensitive about asking who's paying for this vanity project. The governments and resources of two countries are being employed to save five people who should have known better. Sounds like a reasonable question to me. Thoughts and prayers aside, who in their right mind goes into an untried, unsecured vessel thousands of kilometres into the ocean with a game controller running the show?
Who’s going to pay for the rescue attempts for this??? Either the survivors or, their SUPER, MEGA WEALTHY FAMILIES! That much they NEED to do for the community of humanity that has stepped up in this major way to to help!
^^^ This. How much oxygen they have is most likely irrelevant. The sub used an experimental, unproven carbon-fiber pressure hull and was never tested at the depth it was diving to. Way too many shortcuts were taken in the name of saving money and it looks like they got what they paid for.
That's most likely what happened as the automated sound pings stopped too. The vessel is most likely crushed and dropped at the bottom of the ocean. What gets my goat is that the built in redundancies never kicked in. The vessel was supposed to resurface if the hull pressure dropped. That was the whole pitch !
So much resource going into saving rich billionaires who went down there willfully for an adventure that involves a tragedy from over 100 years ago. Juxtapose this with over 700 innocent, destitute people who perished in the Mediterranean last week, whilst rightfully seeking a decent life, not rescued.

Rich people and arrogance was the symbol of the Titanic as well as these explorers, the Legacy of the Titanic lives on
Part of me is devastated and disturbed just thinking about this story.
The question is, were the passengers aware that this submersible wasn't certified?
I can agree with that regarding the adults, but that boy would have trusted his father to know what he is getting them into.
if they were poor nobody would care
@@utha2665if they didn’t they’re either really stupid or just plain stupid
@@alexl1289 if they were poor they would be in a situation that happens to millions of other people, hence we wouldn't get a sensational story about their individual situation. If there was just five poor people per country, they would get all the attention and help possible. But unfortunately poverty is commonplace and the way the human brain works, we get desensitised to the commonplace and pay a disproportionate amount of attention to the extraordinary. This story isn't interesting because the people affected are rich, it's because it's unique.
I’m sure Tom Hanks will star in the movie about this event
and James Cameron will direct it
Titanic's Revenge
Mission impossible - Tin Cup Returns
I hadn’t stopped to think about this much before now, the more this story goes on and the more I follow it and think about it, the more it just makes almost zero sense to take that risk and go down. With an Ironman or something extraordinary and physical you at least get benefits. The man is right, a screen or a new documentary shows you way way more. It must stink if pee and poo.
What?!?
Billionaires pee and poo too??
OMG!
Some things need to be left alone…
This is truly horrific to think about
5 days is 96hrs best say a prayer for the lost souls
4 days
We are humans so we don’t turn our backs on a rescue because of money. But, in the end the company should have to foot the bill, especially given the corners they were willingly cutting. 😢
For a submersible to go anywhere near this depth, I'd like to think they'd at least have it tethered to the 'Mothership' by a cable capable of lifting it back to the surface.
cable 4KMs long. underwater current. tie a cotton to a fly. dangle it 20m with a light wind X 1000.
It's a couple of billionaires and a couple of millionaires on the submarine. If they're alive they pay for it. If they're dead their estates pay for it
Also one of the best know Titanic historians, submarine pilots and ex French Mavy guy, president of the Titanic society. A great loss!! And a teenager too. I don't care about Rush or Hamish but the rest I do. And the millionaire funds science and SETI.
Paul-Henri Nargeolet is an ex sub pilot. He's been down to Titanic many times and he piloted the French sub Nautile when he worked for IFREMER. He knows the Titanic wreck inside and out. He'll be the only one I mourn for. He's well known to Titanic buffs. Sorry to the rich people on there, but they have no business being there. Nargeolet did. He is a Navy guy and had lots of knowledge on Titanic and the wreck.
@@raflaughter3474 Hubris doomed the Titanic and now this uncertified sub. Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
The government will pay for it, unfortunately.
This is why I adore her. I’ve been yelling for days… who tf is paying for this??
Great idea to secure Captain Marquet for a professional opinion. He is very knowledgeable and gave solid comments. I must say I fully agree with him,... visiting the Titanic...what the point? Are the risks worth it?
Even if found, how do you attempt a rescue before running out of air?
I have no understanding that the vessel was not certified and has no permit to transport paying tourists.
OceanGate is a US registered company. I wonder what regulations we actually have implemented for such vessels and transporting tourists, if any.
yeah, I guess none. I was surprised, too.
Rich people don't have regulations.
The company should pay for the search team. They are charging $250,000 per person. They can afford it.
I hope they're able to rescue them soon.
The clock is ticking
This sub was a scam,a bunch of rich people fell for it,paid a ton of money to do something stupid, and now they'll probably all lose their lives. Proof having money doesn't make you smart.
Advanced my deepest condolences to their family and well wishers. I hope Submarine will not disappear like as MH 370.
Only opens from the outside? Are they serious.
I CAN'T, WHO THOUGHT THAT WAS SAFE.
No kitchen, no master restroom , no way out!!!
People in a mountain top have a better rate of survival.
The woman locked in an Arby's cooler had a better chance of survival if someone else was on her shift.
People locked in an elevator have more room to survive.
That company should pay they have 5 million dollars in their bank account because they've gone down there about 5 times with a least 3 to 4 high paying "CUSTOMER'S".
Yeah, these lunkheads should have learned from the Apollo I disaster...
It’s definitely more dangerous to go deep in the sea, than it is to go into outer space, cuz if you go out, gravity will bring you back. If you go down, you might just keep going down.
um wut? there is zero gravity in space. space travel is more risky than undersea exploration by orders of magnitude
@@adamwright4135 Yea. If you push past earths gravitational pull. Not easy to do. No human ever has. I’m absolutely positive more humans have died in the sea than in space.🤣I know that’s a false equivalence, but I couldn’t resist!
@@Gabriel_Moline i have no idea what's going on here now
Unfortunately the fact that there was no sound, and instant comms lost makes this sound like a catastrophic decompression. It would have been instant, but fully fatal.
Not trying to be pedantic but I heard one expert explain that it's not actually a submarine but rather a submersible because it does not have the capability to function autonomously.
I wonder if so many millions would be spent to search for only 5 ppl if they weren't billionaires/millionaires, such is the world we live in.😢. I doubt it, they'd be delaying saying it's too costly to rescue but maybe recovery wud b considered much later.
What i wondered about after hoping that everyone is alive and found, who is paying the cost of this rescue effort?
The estates of the billionaires that were on board.
Dont worry, one of the billionaires has probably already killed the others to extend his own oxygen.
No pre-rescue/disaster contingency plan? A person has to have a daredevil death wish to sign a waiver with the risk of death stated 3 times on it. Hope they are rescued safely, looking pretty bleak at the moment...
Where is the beacons that give location when lost?
How much money is being spent finding these five people? Seems like an ethical question of what else can be done with this money to save 1000 other lives
I'm so glad they have cable tv down there so they know exactly what to do now.
8:07 Mosquito nets are too often left out of charitable concerns. I am happy to hear this mentioned.
Legit asking: why mosquito nets should be a part of a charity? I get the general idea, but I'd love to hear a more precise explanation.
This was just an ego trip gone horribly wrong… first off that submarine was still in “experimentation process” wasn’t even certified by coast guard standards. Second, there’s little to no emergency protocol in case of something like this happening…
Major lawsuit guarantee at the end of this dark lonely road. Condolences to the families.
MSNBC still calling it a sub. SMH. It's a submersible! Big difference!!
it's a sub-mersible, come on!
@okletmesignup yeah, too bad they're saying ",submarine" in their reports
@@joefillicetti1165 well, actually the English dictionary accepts the word submarine for "a submersible craft of any kind".
I agree "submersible" is a better word in this case, but then again... "submarine" is not exactly wrong either.
@okletmesignup true. Unfortunately all people don't understand that and there been a lot of people wondering why it's so hard to find this one and that's the reason why I was saying the difference. But I agree with you
@@joefillicetti1165 Good point
That's the moment in life when you realize what money can't buy.
Or, the moment they realized what the money just bought.
I just hope they find the sub and save the people and story has a happy ending
It's way beyond time that all participants in dangerously sporting or adventure activites had insurance or are handed a bill for any public assistance.
I believe the billionaire and the other passengers families will be getting a bill. Or, call off the "rescue" now, like the expert said "how many lives could have been saved buying mosquito nets or vaccinations."
You personally getting hit hard in
In the pockets over this? Lol
@@stetomlinson3146 military submarines cant go even remotely close to that depth without imploding
@@stetomlinson3146 Much less do anything useful if they could, im thinking some Darwin awards are in order
Excellent and to the point, truthful information in this report.
This is horrible , It sounds like the sub may have imploded :(
Yeah, sorry, but there is nothing insensitive about asking who's paying for this vanity project. The governments and resources of two countries are being employed to save five people who should have known better. Sounds like a reasonable question to me. Thoughts and prayers aside, who in their right mind goes into an untried, unsecured vessel thousands of kilometres into the ocean with a game controller running the show?
Please please please find them. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Who’s going to pay for the rescue attempts for this??? Either the survivors or, their SUPER, MEGA WEALTHY FAMILIES! That much they NEED to do for the community of humanity that has stepped up in this major way to to help!
Glad you asked about cost - it was something I was wondering
If the sub cracked and the hull got crushed due to the pressure, the people would feel nothing. Instantaneous lights out. Thwack!
^^^ This. How much oxygen they have is most likely irrelevant. The sub used an experimental, unproven carbon-fiber pressure hull and was never tested at the depth it was diving to. Way too many shortcuts were taken in the name of saving money and it looks like they got what they paid for.
If death is the outcome, I'd much prefer this than just sitting there in panic, slowly losing air.
@@paulwblair Logitech Joystick and a washing machin hatch maybe not recommended
@@paulwblair I thought the company had made that titanic trip over 50 times? So isnt that a test in itself?
So much resource going into saving rich billionaires who went down there willfully for an adventure that involves a tragedy from over 100 years ago. Juxtapose this with over 700 innocent, destitute people who perished in the Mediterranean last week, whilst rightfully seeking a decent life, not rescued.
So, true.
Who pays for it? Wow never once thought of that question while this event is going on.
You're acting as if they are personally going to send you the bill.
MAKE the SUB company pay the bills. It's like your neighbor building a spaceship out of a garbage can and a cannon. Money not make you smart.
FILE UNDER: When a Carnival Cruise isn't enough.
A video game controller used to drive this little death trap? The more I hear about this the more half assed this operation seems to have been. That’s wonderful advice to stay calm if they’re still alive and banging on the walls down there. Since the thing is named Oceangate it won’t be a stretch to come up with a name for this scandal.
Remember it was $250,000.00 per seat in the “tourist” sub!
Incredible?? Why are you smiling? Is it difficult to imagine how the people inside this "vessel " are or much worse, were feeling if they ever had time to realize what was about to happen? Is it hard to empathize with their loved ones? How are their lives about to change? My heart is sinking. Are you feeling anything?
How ironic that they wanted to see the Titanic.
That is about the most un-safe cluster of errors I have ever heard of or seen.
Lauching from a home-made-raft 800 miles off shore and going down 14,000 feet? ... O M G!
They really convinced them they would be ok in a bobbing carbon fiber coffin? wow
They couldn't afford the usual crane and ship to launch this death trap?
I'm thinking it got crushed from pressure.
They are billionaires and millionaires. The families will have to pay for it.
I was thinking the same thing. Like they literally got all sorts of money it wouldn't hurt to pay 2 mil.
It seems as if these people found the "thrill" they were looking for?🥴
If these people weren't rich this rescue wouldn't be happening. When was the last time the government spent $2million looking for the average missing person who is lost through no fault of their own?
Most missing person cases cost millions of dollars. This just costs more because of where it is located.
Yes when people are lost at sea search and rescue operations are normal.
In February a 21-year-old truck driver from Belarus, was found on the Euroferry Olympia on Sunday on the third day of a search-and-rescue operation.
Saving Private Ryan?
@@RememberThisShow yep but like I said that's through no fault of thier own this is definitely thier fault. Now I don't hope these people are dead but if they are found they most certainly should be paying the bill
What you said
"If these people weren't rich this rescue wouldn't be happening"
This is false
"When was the last time the government spent $2million looking for the average missing person who is lost through no fault of their own?"
I gave you a resent example, there are many many more a google search away. Also much of this rescue operation is private. Lastly which government are you talking about? there are multiple counties involved in the operation? Right now I think Canada is the most involved.
I'd be afraid to fart in there.
if there weren't a bunch of rich people on board half of america wouldn't even know about this, instead the whole world is invested
It’s a story captivating the world because we’re all amazed at how stupid these people were to do this in a makeshift tuna can not made by experts and now told our tax dollars will be used to fish their likely dead carcasses out.
Bro imagine being almost 12,500 in PURE WATER. Oh my goodness, I would catch a heart attack. Like my chest is beating heavy just making a mind movie of it. You feel like you drowning thinking about it. Man hope they come back safe. Let this be a lesson man. Leave the ocean alone.
It was crushed by the pressure.
Who eats the 10's of millions of dollars to recover the remains- the taxpayers of course. The 2 billionaires heirs should pay the bill
Yes
Those poor people. I can't even begin to imagine the fear their experiencing. Please let them be found. Please.
The ends of the sub are titanium ..but the hull is carbon fiber reinfirced plastic ..apparently the plastic would shatter if it fails ..the 2 materials, metal and plastic will shrink at different rates with temp changes , this could cause a seal to leak or the plastic to crack
Apparently, the ends are just GLUED on, FFS.
I hope everyone is ok, I realize the odds don't look good but if they can remain calm and not use up all the O2 hopefully they will catch a break and be able to survive ........ My hope is that they are found alive - please
‘Who should pay the bill for the rescue’
I mean when skiers, snowboarders, or hikers go down a trail that is marked dangerous or closed and have to end up getting rescued
They end up having to pay the bill
The company new the risks for this dive, they can pay the bill
That's true, also in most ski resorts and a lot of hiking places you have to pay a fee which includes a kind of insurance if an accident happens.
The Kursk was only 354 feet deep. That was an ordeal.
Why even go on board if it's near impossible for rescue if things go wrong? No safety measures in place.
GREAT QUESTION
Charge the estate of these folks for the recovery.
No disrespect meant to these people and I hope they make it back alive, but when some people have stupid amounts of money they do stupid things.
