Thank you. I am a beginner who has had much difficulty with the walk as I used to be a dancer with emphasis on stiff legs and pointing toes... This explains it perfectly.
4. And of course, there's no lifting of the arms. The energy that results from rooting places the arm into the appropriate position, pushed there by the root energy. The deeper the root, the more expansive the bubble. That's how the fa-jing occurs. The root is compressed into its smallest diameter and then explodes as the body relaxes into the ground.
3. Hmmm...that's partially because your appendages are not connecting to your centre dantien, nor the midline of the body. Right foot/left hand; right calf/left forearm; right thigh/left arm always move in sync. When the feet turn, the core turns which drive the appendages.
1. Your right hand push rotates too far, compared to your left. Are you pushing centre to your centreline or are you pushing out over the knee, so the energy bubble that your hand is pushing is equally held between the two hands. 2. You lose your root every time you take a step forward. And every time you pick up your front toes/foot to turn, you lose what little root you had before you stepped.
5. And that is what is most obvious about the form. It's external. What do I mean by external? Here's what you can experiment with. In the two handed push, you transfer your weight from the back foot to the front foot and the arms move horizontally from a point over the back foot to a point over the front foot.
Now this: As your weight transfers from forward foot to back foot, the arms are pulled in towards the chest (not too far, keep the space comfortable), then the weight drops as the body relaxes into the back foot...the body drives itself vertically down through the back foot...there is no horizontal displacement.
I really liked this. I've been taking Tai Chi for 4 years and have never done this "version" of the Tai Chi walk. I love it!! Obviously, you have some folks watching that are quite ignorant about the essence of Tai Chi. The slower you practice (doing it CORRECTLY), the more accurate and faster you can be when you need to do it fast.
Linda, Such an ignorant player u r. The uploader himself claimed his explanation about taichi walk is probably wrong *such a long time ago*. Now wiser.
Wayne, This doctor is incorrect. Before the foot turns 45 degree, the body needs to sit back first on back leg/ lagging leg. The turning leg can only be done when that leg has less weight due to weight transference to the other leg. Not sure if you can see clearly from his video, but ACTUALLY he did exactly what supposed to be done EXCEPT he described it incorrectly.
It's really about mind. Interesting difference between the internal and the external. You sure are proficient! Is core media productions your creation? I'm watching!
There is so much wrong with that information it would take a lifetime to unravel it. Why do people who know just a little bit about tai chi become so inspired to confuse others?
John, Ha..ha..ha.. he is a medical doctor, so he should be aware of body mechanics more so ? Watch *feldenkrais* videos about body mechanics. Use that for taichi movements.
What happens is the energy bubble explodes forward. The body does not move forward. Your hands only point in the direction you want the bubble shape (narrow? pointed? oblong? low? high? circular?) to move toward.
Additional mistakes: turning and shifting weight at the same time; rocking on the heels- you need to drop your toes down before shifting weight; pushing forward with the rear leg and pushing backwards with the front leg when shifting backwards resulting in tilting the body hence compromising correct posture. Pushing with the hands is a common beginner mistake. The energy from the 'push' comes from sinking forward, not pushing with the hand nor with the legs. All common mistakes by beginners.
Ah..... this is called the ' Brush knee and Twist Step in the Yang style Tai Chi . Unfortunately, this performance lacks every basic of body mechanics that make Tai Chi Tai Chi . Sorry.
Adrian wrote: Hi Norman, Just watched your Tai Chi Walk. That looks like the walking I used to do! It would have been really useful to see a profile view as well, rather than just the frontal. Some considerations?
Someone of my façade doing this could get shot by TERRORIST WATCHERS in this upstanding pro-Keystone XL suburban neighborhood filled with churches of many stripes. What a way to go :-D !!!
Background music overpowering your description. annoying to listen to. Microphone rubbing on your clothes I think. Left hand lowered sweeps with palm facing forward, but right hand lowered looks like you sweep with back of hand more prominent. What is best? I love this. thank you.
My friend Bill Zolis kindly shoot and edited this video: it was his choose of music (I sort of agree with you). I am no great expert. I'd say (of hand position) see what feels right to you. Thank you.
00:01:37 .... WTF!!!!! .... This video is 12 years old and it has a problem. The narrator states transfer weight to your front feet then then turn it out 10 degrees .......... Do Not Do this. I've been learning and practicing the Sun 73 form under an instructor and still have a lifetime of practice ahead of of me. My suggestion: as this video is old and has errors, please delete it.

Thank you for the clear instructions on how to do this beautiful walk.
Thank you, great presentation.

how many minutes should one do this walking exercise?
Thank You...Marcy
no fixed time: it can be a meditation (like the Buddhist walking meditation) of any length
you might mix it in with other exercises
Yo soy profesor de tai chi chuan no de tai chi, y no me atrevo a filmarme ,pero veo muchos errores en este video igual vale la intencion
But how do you get to work on time

Turning your toe with the weight on the front leg? Are you serious?
