Finally, a balanced review. I read the book and was looking forward to the movie, but was disappointed by the reviews. Now that I've seen your review I can understand why it's not getting better reviews. I agree that it would have been better as a mini series because there's a lot of ground to cover, as JD's grandparents influenced his life so much. I'm surpised that Ron Howard didn't do a better job, because even in your review a kay detail is missed from book to film. JD grew up in Middletown, Ohio which isn't in Appalachia, but that's where his grandparents and extended family are from. He did spend a lot of time there as a child. So many people migrated from the eastern hills of Kentucky to Middletown, that it was nicknamed Middletucky.
I’m so glad you enjoyed the review. Thanks for enlightening me on J.D’s origins. This all was so interesting to me. Too many good storylines in this movie. I would definitely like to have seen more.
I like your take on it. I enjoyed the movie but, at the same time, felt a little sad after watching it because of the realization that so many people/children do have a rough go of it for the reasons portrayed in the movie. The inspirational part came from his grandmother's determination to see her grandson make something of himself and, as well, the fact that he did pull himself up and out of it and do well. I'd probably give it about a 6.5-7.0 I think. What you said about some of the older people or "tough old birds" who didn't coddle kids as much and who would just say "mmmhmm" when shown an achievement... made me laugh out loud. Yes, I had a few of those in my life too! Stay well! Tim
Great presentation and insights.

It was a sensational movie. I never listen to movie critics. There are a lot of other things I don't listen to, but I won't get into it
