  • The Ibanez AR325 is a Chinese made Ibanez guitar which is a 'reissue' of their early 1980's models which were in turn were based on the famous and highly regarded Ibanez Artists of the 1970s. Review is by an owner and long term user of an original Ibanez Artist 2617 from 1978 who fancied seeing what a reissue was like and in this video he describes honestly the capabilities and sounds this reissue guitar can make, comparing them to the capabilities of his original Ibanez Artist from 1978, a Epiphone Les Paul STD from 2012 and a Gibson Les Paul Standard from 2012. review talks about the features of the guitar, build, sounds, electronics, body design and ease of play and setup. The Amp used is a Blackstar HT5 Valve amplifier with absolutely no effects of any kind added and with the ISF setting at pure UK / GB. This reissue Ibanez AR325 costs less than a Epiphone Les Paul. Reviewer had to import this guitar from Holland to UK as there were none available in the UK for sale. Find out if he's glad he did...
    Guitar is now sold - November 28th 2013
    Thanks for watching and any feedback on your experiences with Ibanez AR reissues would be appreciated.

    Great sounds and so versatile. I actually believed all an Ibanez could do was Death Metal, and now I am thinking about acquiring one of these. At the price they are going for I wouldn't even have to trade in or sell any of my other guitars.

      I used to have two Yamaha SG's. Beautiful, well-made guitars. Now all I play is Ibanez AR's. They're fantastic. My favourite is the standard AR 325. The fancier ones cost more, but the main difference is showy inlay and binding.

      tripfall224 No effects and amp is a Blackstar HT5 - just as it says on the tin. The sound comes form the fingers. Oh and the guitar. It's important to realise just what a difference two pieces of wood make compared to one (strat, the metal Ibanezes etc), they have other advantages but can't do what a solid top guitar can do - or allow you to do.

      Hi Guy, didn't see your comment until today. You talked a lot of sense. I had a new player I'm coaching come to me a few weeks ago, he has an Epiphone Casino, not cheap and it''s shockingly bad to play even after a step by step setup.... it's simply badly produced and I've noticed that with dozens of mid range guitars from BIG NAME brands. Usually it's the pots which aren't sensitive, or the pickups that are too hot or in the case of the Casino - just bad materials and imprecise production. What do you play yourself? Thanks again for the comment. Kenny

    Fab playing, good to hear your own fingers playing. How does the string spacing compare to your Gibsons? I've been looking for a fat finger set up and whilst the 2015 les Paul studio gives you a monster affair, the string spacing is the same..... Ibanez are generally the name mentioned when searching for big necks, but this looks pretty much Gibson sized?

    First up "Play anything" - very nice. Very nice. No, it's not a Les Paul, you won't get the range of tones from it, 'specially when you back off the P/ups to way down low. A good Les Paul delivers very special sounds all through the range, not just your "lazy A" rock (designed by a bit of a "jazzer" so....) and has more "bite" or more "smoke". Not an SG Standard either. SG is a bit of an old fashioned rock animal with a lovely "shimmer" to it because of no maple cap. Certainly not an es335 (PAFs, not Burstbuckers), which is a supremely versatile instrument with a range from massive slam, sweet and room-filling chime, vocal articulation all through the scale, any sort of country, almost anything. The way to tell the difference is to play at room-volume through a proper (big) amp and speakers, no effects at all and explore ALL the controls - thoroughly. If it keeps you there noodling, it's got something. Not a Yamaha SG2000 either (gold dust these days) BUT LOOK!.....Is that handsome and mannerly or what? And listen? Would anyone complain about one of those for Christmas? And the PRICE? If that's currently your price range, take a look - an excellent, excellent guitar for the money that would disgrace no one. Probably best-in-class of it's type and certainly good enough to warrant a p/up upgrade as-and-when. The p/ups on the re-issues are much better than some of the 70s ones with dreadful Super 80 p/ups (the ones with no pole-piece adjustment, a fancy etching on it and stuffed with Araldite - terrible). Happily, I think these are "no more". Very nice video, lovely playing.

    Some little similar lick of ACE inside your playing, isn't it? :-). Nice guitar. I would like to find a simil-Les Paul with less weight and less flesh near 17th fret which would allows me to hit highest notes...

    • @kennymaccaferri2602
      @kennymaccaferri2602  7 лет назад

      HI ACERob71, sorry for the late reply - been away. I've had a little listen to your uploaded videos, well done and keep up the studying and the practice. Lots and lots and lots of practice. And best of luck to you.
      Not entirely sure what you mean about a similar lick of ACE in my playing on this review... it was all off the cuff and a long time ago now. The style I play in this review is just 'play without thinking' stuff (never a good idea when you are trying to get better - so don't you copy that idea! So all sorts of wee influences come out..). I do remember many years ago (many decades ago if I am honest) playing a few Kiss songs with a pick up jamming band,
      the bass player was a Kiss fan, and he chose a few for us to jam. There was one ballad (in Em as I recall, with an easy bass probably :-)) with a lyric "I'm trying to understand, found myself believing I should take it like a man...) not sure what song that was but I could play it even now it was so ingrained in my head, solo and all.
      To be honest I never studied Kiss songs, I was into (rightly or wrongly I do not know) into studying bands that only had one guitarist live, power trios and that sort of thing. I've never been one for copying from studio albums, I personally think that a learning guitarist (or any musician) gets better quicker - much much quicker - by listening to other guitarists live - whether on a live album, video or a live gig). The only exceptions to that when I was learning, were the live albums by UFO (Strangers in the Night which was a huge influence on me, I can still play and great great joy out of playing all those Micheal Schenker solos - I ape one in the video towards the end before I go into Brown Sugar), Cheap Trick (entertainment value and fabulous songs - great chord progressions, and Rick was and is a much better guitarist than he is considered by many in my opinion, but he is primarily an "entertainer" rather than a serious master of the instrument) and Thin Lizzy (though the album I learned all theie songs from was not entirely live - full of overdubs - that was 'Live and Dangerous") and much much later (when I finally understood what they were doing) AC/DC. AC/DC was never my sort of music, but that was because I did not understand it - incidentally AC/DC's music is extremely complicated and interesting - not the notes but the interplay and voices the two guitars produce - I did not at first understand what they were doing in terms of music). Kiss' sound was different, very American in sound and as I was into power trios it did not draw me at the time when I was learning guitar (I am still learning obviously but I am talking about the first ten years, when - well for me - when I was trying to get to the stage where I could listen to anything and play it back note for note, difficult to do when there are two guitars...).
      I note you play an Epiphone LP, good choice for learning on if set up properly, and perfect for you for the timbre of chord work on Kiss songs. You probably heard me say on the video this Ibanez AR325 is "vastly" superior to an Epiphone Les Paul, but to clarify - I mean for an experienced guitarist (and I have been playing for 47 years adn still woryy I do not practice enough), because the spec - off the shelf - with this Ibanez you can do things and produce tones and a wider range of sound colours, a range which is just not possible on the Epiphone with its type of wood and especially the tone pots. With two pickups and two volumes and two tone pots and the skill to produce the different sounds with your fingers - the range of sounds and quality of sound is better on the Ibanez but as I say on the video, even the Ibanez is pretty limiting compared to a Gibson Les Paul - a good one that is, or an original Ibanez Artist from the seventies.
      My main electric guitars at the moment are a couple of Gibson Les Pauls (and they are very different from each other - one is weight relieved the other solid, different sounds and sustain entirely), but there is always the problem with access to higher frets, but the Gibson Standard they are producing at present is quite simply - a superb guitar, probably the best off teh shelf rock guitar available. But there is no need when you are learning to invest in such a top end guitar - no point at all and a well set up Epiphone will do 90% of what a Gibson can do. My main guitar when I was younger (I got it when I was sixteen and I had already been playing acoustic for about ten years and electric for two or three by that point - an Eros Les Paul Copy!) was the Ibanez Artist I mention in the video, I was very fortunate to have such a brilliant guitar come to me, but I could have easily got away with something less powerful, that guitar is now retired and in storage, I have not played it in a couple of years I don't think. Guitars are tools and it is nowhere the quality of the Gibsons I have). I also have a couple of EVH's for heavier technical stuff and funnily enough I've been playing a Fender American Strat more and more recently as I am playing some very technical jazz rock stuff with a project which is not suited to a humbucker guitar even with coil taps as the Gibson Les Paul has) - The Strat is a different ball game altogether - single coil pickups, lonmger scale neck and one piece of wood - the Strat REALLY IS much more challenging to play well than the shorter scale guitars (Epiphones, Gibsons and Ibanezes), but there are compensations - if you can handle the Strat - and that is not easy - it allows you to play much more accurately than on any Gibson or Ibanez, but developing that technique and discipline takes a serious investment in time, its a different beast entirely. Not sure I would ever recommend any beginner who wanted to play 'lead guitar' to buy a Fender Strat, fine for strummers though and rhythm guitarists.
      Anyway, thanks for the comments and I hope that you find the comments in reply of interest. Take care and keep playing!

      Hi Kenny, I've been reading in deep all you precious information. thanks! by hearing that you play since 47 years, makes me feel in Jurassic park since I'm practicing 2 hours a day, but only since two years!! :-)) I don't give up and go right ahead. The Kiss song you said is "I Still Love You" from Creatures of the Night 1982. It seemed to recognize some Ace Frehley lick in you playing but maybe it was a mirage... :-) My Les paul Epiphone tuned a half step down, together with my Fender mexican Telecaster HH and Marshall DSL5C is more than anough to me at moment. I started to feel better almost as a real guitar player only after I started to play with some other guy musician, and for the practice that is crucial because it helps me to win my shyness and inhibition which at beginning literally blocks myself. And also wen I started to play standing. I like the tone and the look of the Les Paul, but is quite heavy and hard to play at high notes forcing myself to change position of the sx thumb (but I see do this even by other musicians), that's why I remained curious on the Ibanez. I'm a big fan of KISS (70's era), but I practice also with Led Zeppelin, ZZ TOP, Creams Eric Clapton, pink Floyd, and even Disco music (Shocking Blue - Venus, etc). Thanks again, Let's keep in touch. Regards.

    • @kennymaccaferri2602
      @kennymaccaferri2602  5 лет назад +1

      There is no comparison with SOME Les Paul guitars (not all!). I loath to say it but the very best Gibson Les Pauls are in a different league from the original Ibanez Artists, which (as I think from memory I say in the video) are much better than these AR325 guitars. Essentially you get what you pay for - if both are set up properly - an experienced player can tell in seconds. They have a wider range of tones, range of timbre, they make you play better, and simply put they are easier to play. It might sound silly that, but it's true in my opinion that is, but you make up your own mind. Thanks for the comment, and maybe some day I will compare my original Artist (which I still have and is a great friend) with my current guitar of choice - a Gibson Les Paul Standard - it's no friend but it is a better guitar. By a mile.

      I’ve got a few collectors items but my dream guitar is a Yamaha SG3000. The one Santana played for 5 years until he played his PRS. I have 2 lower end Yamaha SG’s The MIJ one is awesome and the only reason I’d swap it for an excellent LP is so I could sell the LP and buy an SG3000. Almost identical specs but with the through neck, way better to play and loads of sustain. I just bought the AR420 and can’t fault it. Let’s be honest here though, the chunks of wood (guitars) that most of our pioneers used to play on were what made them greats. They didn’t have the luxury of choosing the best LP in the shop. BB used to pull wires from the screen door when he broke strings, so magic guitar or not, it’s what our fingers do that create the magic. LP’s are way wayyyyy overpriced and they can’t make’m like they used to, so buy Chinese... it might make the US build guitars like they used to. Peace!

    • @kennymaccaferri2602
      @kennymaccaferri2602  8 лет назад +1

      Thanks for compliment. I honestly cannot recall how much I spent as it is a while ago now, but I think it was about four hundred and fifty euros, I see that they sell for a bit more than that now, but second-hand it's a good guitar to get if you take care in getting it set up properly. As I say in the review, this guitar is a 'mid budget' guitar, but it is much better than many of the lower priced guitars and there is great room to set it up better.
      I know from experience (both my own, and friends and people I've played with or given lessons to) that it can be confusing to relatively inexperienced guitarists (my definition of that would be guitarists who have not been playing for ten years!?) to understand the difference between one guitar and another which costs perhaps five or six times as much.
      It comes down to care of manufacture, the quality of the components including the wood and the feel of the guitar when everything is put together and how it is set up. That takes a long lone time to appreciate, and every guitarist should try, but it does take time.
      The difference between this ( a MID-PRICED guitar and perfectly good for any player in any setting that needs a two ply humbucker solid body guitar - the two ply part is ultra important for the sound) and say a Gibson Les Paul Standard or an Original 1970's Artist from Ibanez (some of these are solid body not two ply) is that these expensive guitars are hand assembled by EXPERTS and have much more expensive components and quality control procedures) - the overall difference is enormous. But it won;t make that much difference to an inexperienced guitarist. The difference between this guitar and (cheaper) guitars such as an Epiphone or similar 'copy' is also quite substantial as well (Epiphone Les Paul and SGs are - in my opinion, based on owning them and playing them - entry level priced guitars for beginners, people on a budget and amateurs, there are good ones but not many and you need to change a lot of the stuff on them to make them capable of being played like this guitar).
      Another good choice about the same price is a "Gibson Les Paul Studio", which has a better resale value and has some work done on it in setting it up (but not enough) out of the factory; but - again in my opinion - is not as good an actual guitar as this Ibanez Artist AR325.
      Hope this helps!

    • @kennymaccaferri2602
      @kennymaccaferri2602  10 лет назад +1

      Hi, thank you for your kind comments. For what you say - AS73 or AR325 for blues playing? No competition really in my mind, the AR325, being not only a solid body but a mahogany body with a babinga top (This makes a HUGE difference to the sound of a guitar in sustain and richness and don't let anyone ever tell you different - singly pieces of wood don't sound like these guitars), while the AS73 - which looks a nice guitar has a hollow body which may be great for certain types of blues (BB King can't be wrong...) it will be a little shriller and won't have the range or depth of sounds. Only an opinion right enough. I've always found hollow body guitars great for low volume intricate chord stuff - but not for all round playing - and it's a fact that nearly all the 'name' players who use these hollow body guitars live, have to make modifications to avoid feedback at certain frequencies, generally by stuffing them with towels and such like..!

      guitar. Really do like the looks of the AR325 more then the AS73. How is the quality of those gold plated parts? Is it any good or does the "gold" wear of? Do you also have some experience with the Vintage brand? I own a Vintage VS6 Gibson SG copy and it does sound great but when i buy the Ibanez AR325 I think that my Vintage will eat dust.

      Nico Geeverding I don't think they are actually gold.... (unlike the originals which were) so should not tarnish too much. But if they do - it just give a guitar character. I've played some Vintage guitars - tested a few of them after I read an article about their Lemon Burst guitar, perfectly playable but no WOW factor and they had a few little issues on the quality side - nothing that could not be fixed *a bit like this Ibanez was. I am very lucky I have a lot of guitars, and funnily enough the best ones cost a lot of money, though some really bad ones cost a lot of money too....

      Kenny Maccaferri
      I just bought the Ibanez AS73 in the color Ivory instead of the AR325. Got it for a good price! Absoluty great guitar and finish! Still like that AR325 too!
      Just discovered that the headstock of my Vintage VS6 SG is twisted. The fretboard seems not to be twisted. Still have warranty on this guitar and thinking of getting it back to the shop and get the AR325. Not sure if the shop will do this, but I can try.

      Hi Littlejohn, excellent choice you made there. As I think I said below I sold this guitar - not because it was not any good - it is very good, but because I only bought it to compare with my older Ibanez Artist from 1978. As you will understand, it could not really compete with the older much loved friend I grew up playing. I am lucky enough to have many many guitars and thought it best to pass it onto someone who would use it as "their number 1". The construction of the guitar is almost perfect, the top gives great sustain and it is a guitar any true guitarist would be proud to own.

    Hello. Great review. I have the same guitar and its neck weights so much that my strap slips and the neck goes down . What kind of strap do you recommend?? Thank you.

    • @kennymaccaferri2602
      @kennymaccaferri2602  5 лет назад

      Hi Patricio.... thanks for the comment. With all of these ibanez double cut away guitars the neck strap holder is in the wrong place out of the factory, my advice is simple: take a screwdriver (destornillador) and unscrew the strap support and remove it, then put the screw into the middle of the body - where it balances perfectly. I personally use Gibson branded straps with locking quick release mechanisms. I have a lot of them every strap fits every guitar... First thing I do when I get a guitar I'm going to keep is put locking strap buttons on. It's just the right thing to do Thanks for the reply!

      Hi Paul, forgive me for the late reply. Thanks for your comment. I've never played an Artcore Ibanez. In fact my experience of Jazz Hollow Body guitars is very limited - only had about two or three goes on them in my whole life. Neck shape is very much a personal choice, and though I use (in the main) quite a number of guitars with a wide range of neck feels, for this type of bluesy, rock solid body stuff (and because I grew up playing a thin neck electric guitar - my original Artist) I prefer a slim neck. It's not better or worse, just my preference. What do you prefer?

      Kenny Maccaferri Hi Kenny, it's cool. Thanks for replying. I prefer Hollowbody guitars. I have an Eastman T146sm and I have a Cort Yorktown. Both are amazing guitars. My solidbody guitar is an Ibanez 440R.

      That's a brilliant question! One theory suggests that it's simply unconscious practice, to become really really familiar with the layout of the guitar... When you play a guitar (or any instrument) you need to be able to find your way around quickly, for example you ever played an EVH with more than one pick-up? Completely different tensions (or torque) on the different volume pots (one costs about twenty times they other and is SO much more sensitive)... So, I guess I fiddle with guitars not consciously but because it's a habit to make sure I REALLY know how to change the pickups, the mix of volume and tone AND WHERE THEY ARE.. Or I'M JUST A FIDGET?! Thanks for watching this now very old video. K

      Guitarist do that all the time to know the capability of a guitar, that noodling shows a lot of capability or limitations, that is the fastest way to do it although it may not sound musical sometimes :)

    • @geoffreyallen888
      @geoffreyallen888 4 года назад

      I think the real question is "Why don't you do that?" So many (so many!) guitar players stick the volume on max and then just use the switch but if you watch vids of pros, they are always into the controls and if you want to know why that is, take a listen to "Live at Leeds" (The Who). The guitar is an SG Standard or Special whacked straight into God-knows-how-many Hi Watt monsters with only an Echoplex hanging around somewhere. From the deck of the guitar, while singing, jumping over the drumkit and all the rest (and some really neat banter with the crowd, it's a great album), Townsend controls the volume, tone and gain to produce the back tracks to all that Daltry is doing. Virtually acoustic at times, at will he makes it sound as though he's smashing it up NOW! then continues with another bit of repertoire and (most of all) everyone in the band knows exactly what's coming. On Led Zeppelin Three "Since I've been loving you", the guitar is a single take - all controlled from the deck of the guitar to produce that surprise "Bang" - " "It's JIMMY PAGE! and he's in - NOW!" - the drama it creates when he takes it from that smoky blues to "I'm f*cked off with this girl" and Robert Plant obliges like a banshee. It's not every guitar that will do it, it's not an Epiphone, that's for sure.
      So that's why we mess around with the controls all the time. If you don't do this - you never find out when it's time to upgrade your amp/guitar because only good quality instruments answer for doing this. "Bedroom warrior" guitarists use the guitars they use because (respectfully) they don't know the difference between a CTS pot, a bumble bee or sprague capaciter, a 250 or 500k tone pot - all they do is buy another stomp box. If you don't mess around with the controls, start now. If you find yourself unable to get interested in the instrument at these different settings, question this - are you worth a better guitar/amp? Find out who you are.

    How does it balance on a strap? Neck heavy?

    • @kennymaccaferri2602
      @kennymaccaferri2602  10 лет назад

      Funnily enough it is not maybe because of the extra wood around the neck as it comes to the body - totally unlike the originals where you had to move the strap button to balance it. Good leather strap helps keep it in position as well.

    hiee.. wanna get my first guitar.. n bit confused among ar325, ar420 n epiphone les paul plus top pro.. soo suggestion of the best among them wud b really helpful.. thnx

    • @kennymaccaferri2602
      @kennymaccaferri2602  8 лет назад +1

      An Epiphone Plus Top Pro is a good guitar (if it is set up correctly and you get a good one, I 've found a few very good ones in my time) I've played a lot of them, both my own and of pupils and friends. The AR325 (when set up properly - and the one I demonstrate here was not set up well at all when I got it, as you will hear me explain int he video) it is, however, quite a big improvement on the Epiphone, in terms of tones, neck access, pickups and indeed the pots as well as the overall play-ability... But the thing is Pranay, if it is your first electric guitar, it might not make that much difference to you, so the Epiphone would be fine and you should go with that shape and brand if it appeals to your heart and fingers. Good luck with your guitar playing. Don't forget to practice!

      @@bassa69 i really think you ought to consider making an attempt at de-offence-o-sizing your communication skills. It might be that in your party of the world, referring to another as HE isn't offensive. But in these here parts that is something that a parent would give a clip around the ears. Just because YOU don't think it offensive doesn't mean it isn't OFFENSIVE. In my opinion your comment want only offensive but unacceptable, and then your idiotic "calm down" crud was even more offensive. Never ever ever not even once refer to someone's video with a comment like that "he?". That's just plain out of order.
