8C 2900B Lungo: Bestückt mit einem Acht-Zylinder-Reihenmotor und Roots Kompressor galt der Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Lungo als der schnellste Serienwagen seiner Zeit. Der Motor stammt direkt vom Tipo-B P3 von 1934 ab und verleiht dem Wagen für die damalige Zeit beachtliche Fahrleistungen. Wagen diese Typs gewannen mehrmals die Mille Miglia und gehören heute zu den teuersten Klassikern. Dieser wunderschöne 8C 2900B Lungo war bei der Chromjuwelen-Ausstellung im Technischen Museum Wien zu sehen.
Der 8C 2900B Spider Touring galt zu seiner Zeit als das schnellste Serienauto der Welt. Dieses Exemplar besaß eine Spezialkarosserie von Touring und war das Einzige seiner Art. Heute zählen die 8C zu den teuersten Oldtimern auf dem Markt.

Auf der Straße schnell und schön, sollte er auf den
Rennstrecken schlicht verboten werden. Die Plätze 1, 2 und 3 bei der Mille Miglia 1938 sprechen eine deutliche Sprache.
Der auch auf den Bildern zu sehende Les Mans mußte im
gleichnamigen Rennen wegen eines Ventilbruchs allerdings
ausscheiden. Er hatte vor dem Motorschaden 160 km Vorsprung auf den Zweitplazierten !

The 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B 'Lungo' Berlinetta was exceptional in both design, power and handling. With coachwork by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan, it was described at the time as "the fastest car in the world". A total of 43 were built and it's the most exclusive and expensive Alfa Romeo ever.
The 8C 2900B was based on the 8C 2900A sports racing cars and were built as "Corto" (short wheelbase), "Lungo" (long wheelbase) and "Le Mans" version. Only 10 Lungo-versions were built between 1937 and 1939.
Three of Italy's finest coachbuilders provided coupe and convertible bodies for the 2900B, Carrozzeria Touring, Stabilimenti Farina and Pinin Farina. Touring produced only five coupe bodies on the 2900B Lungo.

Alfa Romeo made some amazing cars immediately prior to the war. It's a pity WWII came between because the success of Alfa Romeo probably would have continued into the 1940's. The first Formula 1 champion car was the Alfa 158 which was presented in 1939 already for the Voiturette racing class. Sadly the war denied this car its prime.

I agree - and I have seen the old renderings and illustrations for concept cars from American designers and manufacturers - and is very evident that European automobiles did have a strong influence on the designs they came up with. Yet, the Americans never built cars like this for the public. Even high-end or better grade makers such as Cadillac, Lincoln, Packard, Studebaker offered the same old thing as everyone else - whereas - Duesenberg, Auburn, Cord did have much more sporty looking and high-performance sports cars - yet, only the very wealthy could afford them and few were made.
Oftenly, I marvel over what the French - Italian- Gerrman - Spanish - automakers developed and then produced for their customers. Hadn't that damnable World War 2 happened and the evil that it brought forth, including the British and Americans, designers and engineers would have been free to develop such fantastic cars that we can only dream about today.
These Alfas Romero's are certainly priceless jewels of automotive art and development. I love looking at them and dreaming " If Only".
Lindsey Allison Westhaven; same in Europe. These cars from Alfa Romeo were extremely expensive - and only for the richest among the rich. You can easily compare with Ferrari/Rolls Royce price level of today. Il Duce (Benito Mossolini) - crazy as he was, knew what he wanted, and owned several race cars from Alfa, and privately (among other cars from AR) drove a very nice 1935 Alfa Romeo 6C 2300 Sport Spider.
@@jrgensenbo2999 Well, we have to say that cars like the 8c2900 were like a today's hypercars by Pagani, Lamborghini, Bugatti and so on.
And that at its age American production espressed similar cars from Packard, Duesemberg, Cadillac 16c! and so on.
The Duce didn't own the Alfas he drove, Alfa Romeo was a state-owned factory so they were in use. He was an Alfista precisely because Alfa was state owned

Die Ausstellung hieß: "Chromjuwelen" und lief vom 25.10.2007 bis 02.03.2008 im Technischen Museum in Wien.
