Man Chris that k Whopper is nice, and In great shape for it's age, Detroit's are loud but it does sound good, you don't hear that anymore, nice looking rig, thanks for sharing this video.
This brings back memories fill up the oil & check the fuel , 3 miles to the gallon of fuel & 100 miles to the gallon of oil ,when u leave it idle put a bucket under it catch the leaking oil & dump it back in the engine when you are ready leave ,years ago you could tell the guys that ran detroits in the truck stop they were all deaf & there right arm was bigger than there left arm from shifting gears & They smelled like oil. HAHA
Screaming Detroit Diesel. Neat ride. Looking forward to the digging. I remember a book when I was a kid about a big old steam shovel. Mike Mulligan (?) and his steam shovel maybe. It was back in the early 1960's and I was pretty young. Thanks.
Our local library was getting rid of old books, and that was one of them. I made my wife grab it, so we now have two copies. Kind of sad that it won't be in the library anymore though.
Nice looking truck. Love the way that Detroit sounds. Nothing like that old equipment it was built to last simple mechanics and easy to work on with no electronics like modern equipment
I’ve watched a lot of your videos but this one caught me by surprise. Especially when you came to the bottom of the hill i then realized exactly where you are. About 10 miles up the road from me. Pretty cool.
They used more than one 281 Pete in that movie, though they were portrayed as one and the same... but, if you remember, one had a Detroit (8-71) and the other, a Cummins.
Love the sound of a 2 stroke Detroit...just listened to this video 2 times and will some more tonight...back in the day I drove a cab over Kenworth with a turned up 318 (8 V 71) and a 13 speed...a night I would roll the window down and just listened to that Detroit scream...probably why I can't hear today...sure miss those days.
I love the two stroke Detroit's! They sound so awesome and are so bad to the bone! I want to find a old truck with one in it one day and refurbish it! We use to have a frac pump in our fleet that I use to run and work on. If you think that thing is loud, then you should hear a 1800hp 2 stroke running at full load around 2100 rpm! So bad ass!! Love the old stuff! Awesome video bro!
WOW .. I used to drive those tractors in the oilfields of Montana and North Dakota back in the early 80s. They were equipped with the Detroit 8V92TA engines. You didn't dare lug the engines much below 1800 RPM - the extreme temps could damage the heads. Another issue with those motors - get the belts too tight and you could actually break the crankshaft due to the distance between the belt pullys and the first bearing. Great riding tractors, except it took 11 acres to turn a circle LOL
I learned that the best way to drive the old Detroits was to slam your finger in the door when you got in it that away you were mad enough to drive it.
Nice I mean nice truck what a great lowboy truck! I enjoyed the video It was different than the normal but entertaining. Thanks for sharing this with us.
If any of you are railfans like me, the sound of that KW reminds me of why I like EMD locomotives (with their 2 stroke diesels) over the chugging 4 stroke GE locomotives. My dad used to drive truck, hauling steel in the late 50's early 60's (pre-interstate highway days), and he told me that he loved his detroit diesels.
James Evans..... I "love" Both versions of these uni-Flow Scavenged engines as well (Detroit Diesel & EMD), but... they have Nothing in common with each other, other than they're Both of the Uni-Flow Scavenging design, and both use self metering Unit style injectors, and the older Series 567 & 645 engines used Rootes Style blowers... but other than that, they had absolutely Nothing in common... including sound.
That old 318 sounded good with the Jake sneaked on it. I owned a 1973 just like that one but mine had the big cam 350 Cummins in it with a 9 speed over drive, 3rd and 4th gears where turned around in it to make it over drive and I loved driving it.
Oh, that was a sweet sound and complete with flappers even... KW W900s have always seemed the best looking truck to me since I was a kid. He's done a good job with this one, a nice combination of new mixed in with old-school. Glad you shot different views on this drive, too. I'm still partial to old-school rotating beacons (they still haven't matched the look sufficiently well with led's) instead of the modern lights but it's getting harder and harder to find them, much less replacement lamps (they're getting ridiculously expensive). That's just being nitpicky, of course lol ... Love this setup and the old Bantam, too! Straight exhaust sounds great but, yeah, I like my hearing, too... lol The missed gear was amusing but anyone that tells you they haven't missed a gear (ok, maybe not the "drivers" with "automatic only" on their licenses these days) would be lying to you... :)))
Beautiful ride!!! Would definitely do something about the Detroit!!! Drove an exact twin to it, with a big cam 400 Cummins...not nearly as WELL maintained as yours. Thanks for sharing the old iron!!!
Chris great video. Looking at the ride over i said damn this looks familiar then i seen the watkins glen NY i was at the nascar track 2 years ago you were only 2hr59m from the border i live over in niagara falls Candada.
Interesting I'm from ny I didn't know what part of ny you were visiting until I saw the road sign and where you pulled into then I recognized the place I've driven by there before its about a hour away from where I live. If would have known you were going to be there I would have come and met you boys
Never had a Jake brake on anything I operated but ya that Detroit probably had a 13 or 15 speed fuller trans. My favorite screaming Jimmy was a v12 with a thirteen speed trans hauling a trailer train with 80,000 payload now you are talking power and lots of noise. I still can hear it LOL.
Wish I had known you were in the neighborhood Chris, you were only about 5 miles from my house when you crossed over Caitlin hill and went down into Beaver Dams NY. Would have been cool to meet you in person.
Detroit diesels were made by General Motors during ww2 the 671 engines were in everything from landing craft on the beach in Normandy to tanks trucks etc. Gm made the engines so tuff they kept making them and sold them to truck equipment manufacturers.
America was literally built by 2-Stroke Detroit engines. Later, the Series 60 12.7 was the first truck engine to ever run over 1 million miles without an overhaul. I have a 99 12.7 that has been one serious money making chunk of cast iron & steel.
Love them old Detroit's screamin demon sounds like you're running 100 at 10 mph lol
The Auto Dismantler that’s for sure . 4000 rpm at like 1500
I kept half expecting to see Andrew Camarata coming down the road at some point.
Glad I wasn’t the only one looking out for him
Hahaha!! That would be awesome.
Na letsdig18 only shows nice equipment.... not clapped out junk...
I wouldn’t call all Andrews gears clapped out junk and he does very well with what he’s got
@@lml6.653 It must be hard to go through life being so toxic... my sympathies.
Loud ]maybe[, but music to my ears! Love the sound of the old Detroit!!
Man Chris that k Whopper is nice, and In great shape for it's age, Detroit's are loud but it does sound good, you don't hear that anymore, nice looking rig, thanks for sharing this video.
Brings back memory's. ..had a 1974 with a 8 V 71 TTA. NOTHING LIKE THE SOUND. .. :)
Wow what ride, that engine sounds great, Thanks for the ride along.
Great video thanks for sharing have a great day and stay safe out there
Would have been nice to have restored my Dragline like that one was! Beautiful setup!
Love that start up! The growling... Best watched while wearing headphones.
i just fell in love with another truck, that thing is saaweet.. thank you and thanks to the owner for allowing the filming to be done
Back in the day when driver and truck had 1 thing in common they could both smoke
😂
This brings back memories fill up the oil & check the fuel , 3 miles to the gallon of fuel & 100 miles to the gallon of oil ,when u leave it idle put a bucket under it catch the leaking oil & dump it back in the engine when you are ready leave ,years ago you could tell the guys that ran detroits in the truck stop they were all deaf
& there right arm was bigger than there left arm from shifting gears & They smelled like oil. HAHA
Lmao
Love the sound of the old screaming Jimmys and how they loped when you first started them
Yeah, the old school diesel engine mechanics used the terms hunting or searching for the Jimmy lope.
Jake's on them old 2 strokes is music to my ears
I don't care who you are. If you have a set of nuts, you want to ride in that truck. Thanks for sharing.
I'd want to drive it. Sounds just like my '68 IH R623CBE , 238 and 15 spd Deep Reduction
Screaming Detroit Diesel.
Neat ride. Looking forward to the digging.
I remember a book when I was a kid about a big old steam shovel. Mike Mulligan (?) and his steam shovel maybe. It was back in the early
1960's and I was pretty young.
Thanks.
Hell, I remember reading that too. Still got it in my bookshelf 'cause I read it to my niece now and again.
I remember that book
Steam shovel’s name was Maryann! I handed down that book to my first grandson. Thanks for reminding me.
Fantastic book! Just spent $30 to get a hard cover copy for my 5y/o nephew
My mom read to me before I could do it myself , long time ago , hadn't thought it in years ,thanks for the reminder!!!!
Ohhh mama what a truck! That was great! Thanks for the video!
The logo on the door is from a book by the name of “mike mulligan and his steam shovel” .
Love that book! I made sure my son read it too.
Captain Kangaroo used to read it to us!
My favorite book as a kid. Brings back great bedtime memories... About 50 years ago.
Our local library was getting rid of old books, and that was one of them. I made my wife grab it, so we now have two copies. Kind of sad that it won't be in the library anymore though.
That was one of my all time favorites as a kid in kindergarten, that and katie and the big snow.
Garret has a sweet truck! Love the sound! Also loved the picture of you in the dragline 😉🤣
As soon as I saw the old girl had Detroit mud flaps I thought, yep going to be a good video. Beautiful, beautiful stuff.
Just that sound, makes my day.
Love the drive. That is what I miss about NY.
Tbac I love upstate newyork but hate the city
Thats a BADASS Kenworth! Enjoyed that immensely.
Love them ol buzzen dozen nice video Chris
Nice looking truck. Love the way that Detroit sounds. Nothing like that old equipment it was built to last simple mechanics and easy to work on with no electronics like modern equipment
Great video Chris! Thanks for sharing!
So Cool! I had a 1980 KW 900 dump truck back in the day, 400 cummins.
I could listen to that truck all day ...reminds me of riding in our semi when i was a kid with my dad
This KW makes your F450 look like a SmartCar! Love the music from the pipes.
What a great taken care of KW! Awesome whopper! 🤘🏼
I’ve watched a lot of your videos but this one caught me by surprise. Especially when you came to the bottom of the hill i then realized exactly where you are. About 10 miles up the road from me. Pretty cool.
nice change up Chris . beauty old truck and gorgeous landscape . I like the land ... hell with cities .
I did turn it down a bit but the tones from that KW could tell a blind man the topography of them hills. Thanks to the owner for sharing. Music.
Omg I'm in love I want it so bad. You sold me on the first startup.
It gave me memory's of the Peterbilt 281 chasing Dennis Weaver down the road in "Dual". lol
They used more than one 281 Pete in that movie, though they were portrayed as one and the same... but, if you remember, one had a Detroit (8-71) and the other, a Cummins.
Great ride along beautiful Kenworth

That’s a sweet rig! Totally worth the hearing loss 🙉😂
WHAT
Mrs. Elite Earthworks almost as sweet as Blackie 🦅
Thanks for the fun truck ride. I enjoyed every minute of it!
Kenworth sounds so nice, shifting
thru the gears, with the old Bantam on the flatbad Chris
Low-boy.... it's Not a "flat-bed".
I love the two stroke Detroit's! They sound so awesome and are so bad to the bone! I want to find a old truck with one in it one day and refurbish it! We use to have a frac pump in our fleet that I use to

And if you got lost coming back from a location, just follow the oil leaks.
This is the best sound I've heard for the year.
DAAAMN WHAT A RIDE MAKES ME MISS MY OLD A MODEL, BUT 30,000 MILES WHAT A FIND THAT'S GREAT!!!
When i see an older kenworth i think of Smokey And The Bandit . I want to drive that truck

Awesome vintage Kenworth!!
A very nice truck and a beautiful old digger.
We got a convoy Bandit !! Sweet ride.

Nice region to visit on your first trip to NYS; the Fingerlakes. Wine country and The Glen.
I love the Mike Mulligan painting on the door!!!
Old School, No Fool !!! Loving me some Detroit this A.M.
That logo on the truck door is from the kids book Mike mulligan and Mary anne, that's a nice touch
That old 318 sounded good with the Jake sneaked on it. I owned a 1973 just like that one but mine had the big cam 350 Cummins in it with a 9 speed over drive, 3rd and 4th gears where turned around in it to make it over drive and I loved driving it.

Holy shit, you were up in my neck of the woods!
If you get to Allegany county, hmu and I'll buy us drinks:-)
Just gotta love the sound of a 2 stroke Detroit
love that sound!
THAT WAS PURE GRUNT PULLING UP THOSE HILLS THATS PROPER MUSIC FROM A DETROIT DIESEL YOU CANT BEET THE SOUND OF A 2 STROKE ENGINE ANYTIME ANYWHERE
Everybody hates on the Detroits but has anyone calculated how much freight and equipment has been moved by them in their day? "Inconceivable!"
Detroit diesels were made by General Motors during ww2 the 671 engines were in everything from landing craft on the beach in Normandy to tanks trucks etc. Gm made the engines so tuff they kept making them and sold them to truck equipment manufacturers.

That kenworth sounds ridiculously badass
This dude is super trucking 👍
Gotta love the sound of a Detroit Diesel 👌
