Modified Motion Driven Sprinkler Finally Effective Against Heron At My Koi Pond

- After studying the videos of my fish getting eaten by Herons despite the motion triggered sprinklers, I finally came up with a modification to make it effective at chasing the Heron away. I modified the mounting to place the sprinkler head at an angle so that the water shoots out horizontally. This allows the jet to hit the heron's body directly. I also set up additional sprinkler heads so that they all spray at the same time. The Rainbird cannot be used for this since the elevation of the motion sensor cannot be adjusted. I also had to set up additional sensors/sprinklers to cover all the entry points to the pond. These birds are smart and they don't quit. They still come back and try just in case I forget to turn on the water. They also can move so very slowly so the sensor will not detect them. Fortunately, they tend to flutter their wings just before they attack and the sensor will trigger just in time to foil the attack.

At my previous house, I had a pond where the herons would feast on my large goldfishes. I placed a floating alligator head with yellow eyes that sparkled in the sun. That seemed to do the trick. The herons never came back.
I think this is super cool, If I had some money I'd set up a pond like this and just supply it with cheap fish to watch them hunt. Super cool.

Yes H M, they are very smart, but they just cannot concentrate to get a fish while the spray is blasting them. They try to find different path to the water so they do not trigger the spray. I have video monitor so I can learn their behavior and add spray heads as needed. So far I have 4 heads and fish line barriers for others. Then they found a way to approach from behind the bushes on the far side of the pond and emerge just behind the feeder. They know when the feeder goes off and come to wait for it staying very still and get the fish when they feed. They try to get a fish before the IR sensor triggers. I managed to setup barriers there so they cannot access that area. It has been a cat and mouse game.
Sharon, I will try to post a photo of my setup. Haven't got around to it so far. Sorry. If you are placing the spray on dirt ground, just insert the spike at an angle so the head sprays mainly horizontal.
We're going through the cat & mouse game at the moment. The water spray sensor as it is straight from the shop is useless - I will adjust the spray angle. First visit from the heron after installing it, it just looked at the spray and then at the house, and I could hear it thinking "Is that the best you can do, human?"

Love your video. I’m having the same problem ( doesn’t every koi pond owner) they are persistent suckers for sure. I HATE having a net. My pond is a bit smaller and a much different surroundings . I only have one sprayer so far. Fishing line around the sides and back. Problem is with the big rock caves they now all hide under I can’t tell what I have. You have a lot of fish in yours , in fact it looks like more than you should but that’s not the issue here. I have a high powered pellet rifle but my wife REALLY is against me using it. I may just have to pick them off when she’s not around LOL.
What you need is something to create a constant ripple on the water to make it impossible for the herons to see properly in addition to the hoses you have.
That also makes it impossible for the owner to enjoy what they spent thousands of dollars on, all in the name to thwart a damn bird lol. An outside dog or maybe a cat or heck a low powered pellet gun that would just sting and not pierce could alleviate all this nonsense.
@@sam805236 did I say it had to be running all the time? A glass bottom viewer to assist in the beginning would make a difference.
Also, ever hear of airsoft? So nothing stopping you full autoing for a full 2 second blast will certainly make it move off and think twice. Seeing as its in your own back garden, a cheap two tone with heavy grade BB's to get the message through as herons are tough birds and take some hits to move on.
You can add air bubblers that you turn off when you want to enjoy your pond
You do need to make a deeper pond or grottos..that helps..which are wide enough so the long heron cannot reach or reach through...also you can make an enhightened plateau of glass on top of the water but 20 cm above the water.. i used old double glassed huge windows put then on Ikea tablepawsholders after heron season you can remove the heavy glass .
I agree with the rock places to hide. Sadly mine spend so much time under so I can never figure out if any are missing. I have the sprayer too but as you can see it doesn’t always work. Heron seem to be intelligent and figure things out . The decoy is an absolute waste of time. Didn’t work from the git go. I REALLY hate having a net but seems it’s the only sure thing to use. I like the glass idea though. Just can see how to use it in mine. Question …..just when is heron season? I live near the water in Myrtle Beach. Loaded with golf course ponds everywhere . This past month I’ve seen 3 different suckers around mine. Beautiful birds but I really hate them as of now. We have one REALLY huge one. Was quite the shock the first time I saw him.

They will get used to your water spray after a while.
That's just how it is. They are smart and accustomed to everything we do. At least 60 cm at the edge is my best advice.
True dat - mine didn't faze him - a bb gun did, didn't penetrate but I haven't seen him in about 5 years, tho I was warned by a neighbor last week they saw one sitting on top of my house. New one needs a lesson
