I can relate to the "rush" during pit stops. It was my addiction back in the 80's-90. Fortunately for me I chose to go a different career path and leave racing, never having to suffer through the pit road "speed limit." Safer or not, racing in all forms "back in the day" had this larger than life feel, knowing it could be life, or death that day. Now they're all in plastic bubbles and everyone gets a trophy. Damn I miss the ol' days!!!
Back in around March of 1985 Dan visited my high school that I attended in chatsworth georgia. I think he was there to see on of his school teachers that he had back in dawsonvill ga. Her name was miss shadix. And she took him to about every classroom that day and introduced everyone to him. When she stopped by my classroom and introduced him to us, he spoke to us briefly. I thought that was one of the coolest things ever, they had just won the Daytona 500.
I well remember watching a Rockingham "500" mile race in I wanna say 82? Bill was running 2nd to The King & for the better part of 100 laps Bill ran between 1-ft & a car length off of Richard's rear bumper & never touched him! 🤯 I turned to my Father & said "that Bill Elliott is a real deal Wheelman" The King won that race, Bill finished 2nd, but I'm so happy I was at Riverside when Bill won his first Cup race not too long after Rockingham. You asked Dan about that terrible day at Atlanta & I totally respect Dan's evading the question, the man doesn't, even after almost 35-yrs wanna talk about it, I for one don't blame him! 😞🙏 RIP MR ✝️
These interviews with Dan have been great. Dan is very articulate, and his descriptions of events makes it like you are right there watching. A very sad event, RIP Mike.
Great content. I lived and died following their team during this time period. Lived on the west coast. Waited every week for my subscription of Grand National / Winston Cup Scene.
@@josephreilly6328 The restrictor plates were bogus. Bill was one of the safest, most courtesy drivers in NASCAR history. I think they should have let him lap the field for a season. It would have been amazing to watch.
I was just behind the pit box when it happened. Thankfully, I didn't witness the wreck, but they started getting everyone and everything out of the pit stall immediately. I felt as bad for Ricky Rudd as I did for Bill and the pit crew. Rudd was beside himself.
i totally agree with Dan on the pit road speed limit as i also remember the times when there was no speed limit on pit road and the rush that it gave me once they started the speed limits you lost something i remember when you finished a pit stop and it was a great stop remembering nothing of what just took place and fishing up and hands just shanking but man what a great time and rush to do these stops
Rick, you hit a home run on this one. You ask questions to get Ole Dan started & you had the good sense to just hush let him tell his story. Us old school nascar fans CAN RELATE TO A GUY LIKE THIS. I'd say that most of the people that took time to comment on this video actually know people like Dan in their everyday lives. I wish nascar could get back to it's roots & promote guys like the Elliotts
Watched that race from flag to flag, before the accident, Bill actually had the best car that day. He led the most laps and looked to be on his way to his second win of 1990. Then the accident & everything changed. I didn't like the pitlane speeds either BUT it was better than what they did initially which was separating the field with even & odd numbers on the windshields & depending on what your number was, I think only those cars could pit together & tire changes could only be made under green...
The alternating pit stops were the worst,. But no major series had thought of a speed limit either. (F1 was 1994 & Indy Car just copied NASCAR in 1992). In 1991, Indy Car went to the "pit stop grouping" system, so NASCAR was doing a better version of the only idea out there. Which they immediately realized sucked.

Great content. Thanks a million 💵
Thanks, Dan, I learned something.
this dan elliott interview is simply the greatest i have ever listened to. i now believe dan was just as smart and valuable as ernie and bill
He's the smartest of the bunch, don't be fooled!
They've never gotten the respect they deserve

What a great memory for not only you, but all the students in your school, cause as you already know, The Elliot's are revered as Gods in Georgia!
Thanks, Dan, and Scene Vault for sharing this!

Love to hear Dan's stories from back in the day.
Great to hear these stories from him

That Ford was fast. Real, real fast. We appreciate your place in history, Dan.

Great interview. All of these were enjoyable 👍🏁
I met Dan, Ernie, and Bill (the most) several times over the years, and they're the real deal, such a great family! #9 x 2 👍 🇺🇲
We were watching that race live on TV. Still hurts knowing what happened.

I was at this race. Front row across from Bills pit. Very sad day

Bill had that race won, and after the pit road deal it didn't matter. A very sad day.
No Pit Road Speed Limit
I dont remember what channel it was on but they showed the replay over and over again - i had to turn it off and listen to MRN - Eli Gold is Golden
I was at that race. Elliott was looking good.
American Bad Ass!👊🏻🏁

I love the current #9 driver, but the best part of this series is Rick never brought the nephew up once because there was so much to talk about
i was at that race happened rght in front of me.
