Bernie Worrell of Parliament came by the MoogFest Pop-Up Shop yesterday (Friday, May 20, 2016) and played (around) a little for the folks gathered within. Enjoy!
Yeah he did! I've got to see George Clinton 3 times between 2012 or so and 2015 or so. I don't know if he was with them touring or not. Couple people I got to see in person were Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker. Separate shows though. Fred was dope, played James Brown and JB's. Maceo was at Chicago Jazz Fest and it was terrible. I love jazz and I love funk, but I was hoping that one of the baddest sax players to ever blow a horn would've done some funk too, but he did one or two James Brown songs and they were way off tempo, much slower than they should've been. I was disappointed about that one. After listening to "Suds" from Live in Dallas, I was expecting something like that. No such luck. Maceo is one of 2 people I can pick his saxophone out in about 1 or 2 notes. Coltrane is the other.
This is THE MAN who made me want a Minimoog when I was a teen and first heard him play Flashlight back then in the 1970’s!Now whenever I play my vintage Model D, I can’t help but think of him and Flashlight!! RIP Bernie..you are missed.
Bernie maximized the moog! He made it do stuff that was legendary. His P-funk work can't be duplicated. He was at the top of the food chain with them synthesizers, period! Hate he's gone.
I recognized his first riff, and only first really saw him demoing the Sub Phatty back when it 1st came out just wishing I could afford it. And just last monday the 28th of Aug, 1 day before my 35th birthday I FINALLY GOT ONE!! I will have to make a jam to honor the great WORRELL!!! Love his style and FUNK!
His work can be duplicated, you would need about 5 or 6 people at least to do all his takes in a live setting though. He multi tracked all his stuff and just kept making the track fill out. Clinton usually just let him go nuts cuz he knew Bernie had the complete vision musically.
Also the minimoog is a simple as hell synth to use if you ever played one. It's not really about him maximising the moog at all. The guy was a musical genius and would make something sound good out of a frying pan and water too. Same goes with Junie.
At around 1:25; one modulated note tells the entire story: Most of all he needs the Funk, help him find the Funk(Flashlight, 1978). Kudos to Bob Moog for helping Bernie(and so many other keyboard players) find the Funk. Thank you Mr. Worrell for the musical knowledge, much respect and RIP.
Songs: 00:15 - Aqua Boogie, by Parliament 01:31 - Flashlight, by Parliament 02:50 - One Nation Under A Groove, by Funkadelic 05:25 - Good Times by CHIC 07:50 - Tales Of Kidd Funkadelic, by Funkadelic
One of the best videos ive watched on youtube. Was just buzzing to see Bernie sat there at a moog jamming. But when he bust out flashlight i genuinely smiled from ear to ear. Thanks for upload.
Basically, this is the cat that invented synth-bass. Edit: Okay, maybe not "invented", but he was certainly a pioneer and a driving force in getting that type of groovy Minimoog sound into the public ear.
I ain't saying this because he's gone, I'd say it if he was right here same way. He's the greatest I've seen on a synth. All the rest had to fight for second place. Played with a smile on his face and made the Moog do things that everyone else had to try and emulate. RIP Sir. Heaven is lucky to have you in it's orchestra
Bernie Worrell, I had the rare pleasure of meeting you LIVE once. It was on FUNKADELIC'S 1st trip to Japan. George did not come, but I was delighted with meeting Tyrone Lampkin, Rodney "Skeet" Curtis, Michael Hampton, and a whole lot of others. George didn't come until much later. I want to say that YOU are "the bomb" and I've always dug you! Bernie, it was monumental in meeting you. - Freddy P. Knight
wow I've heard his riffs in some funk tracks but I never knew it was him... So today I discovered who Bernie Worell was and today I discovered he passed away how sad
i always loved watching Bernie. He was a beast on that keyboard. There will never be another Bernie. He had mad skills on the keyboard , piano , organ . # Legends never die # Bernie Worrell lives forever #
(April 19, 1944 - June 24, 2016) This event happened a month before he left us. :( Rest in peace, man. You had a *tremendous* career that inspired many.
THIS IS KINDA BITTER-SWEET THO.ON THE ONE HAND IT WAS A TREAT TO SEE HIM EVEN THO WE COULD SEE HOW THE CANCER WAS EATING AWAY AT HIS BODY,BUT THEN ON THE OTHER HAND HE DIED JUST 35 DAYS LATER.REST IN PEACE MY P-FUNK FRIEND.
That copper-syndrome really has its affect on Bernie worrell, Truly Rest In Peace Bernie, Bernie is no longer with us but Parliament/Funkadelic Bootsy Collins all who were a part of this amazing music George Clinton who now is reaping the fruit of P-FUNK work I wish Bernie & all the rest of singers musicians alike were here to see the money that was stolen from all the bands members what a shame for all the hard work P-FUNK 4-Ever to be a fan since 1976 WOW ! It ain't over yet nor will it ever Pe over going on 44 years and it's my pleasure to be dancings 🕺 to the funk ! Happy to have happiness on my side, all the woo in the world Thank you Mr Bernie Worrell !
Good to see someone realize, routing his synths and clavinets through effect pedals he was a real think outside of the box musician the things he did pretty much come standard on workstations today but its good to recognize and originator!!!
When I was young I used to listen to him up my bedroom in Washington D.C. My brother had had all their albums... Now there's one guy from Washington D.C. He play with a D.C. Go--Go band called Rare Essence the wickedest band alive his name was Marky they called him Godfather he is awesome as well...
Yeah WE Heard AboUt Those Other B's Bach...Beethoveen..Brahms...BUt CAN U Imagine Them In YoUr FUnk? Bernie Did...RIP...Genius...Pioneer...Protégé...Rebel...The GOAT...InsUrance Man 4 Da FUnk...
Flashlight was my best because Bernie just went in and added his own spin to it, he killed it. like i said , he was a monster beast that nobody could touch .
Everyone was following Bernie’s lead. Of course everyone in the band added something but Bernie was the driving force behind it all. And this proves his genius if you were unlucky enough not to see them play live. I miss you Champ. r.i.p.
No he didn't? why do people like yourself talk such shit. He did the final takes on that track, it's one of the least tracks he ever contributed to. He plays the opening synth lead bit and some highlights throughout.
R.I.P. Bernie Worrel. This man was truly a keyboard legend and a precursor of synth-funk. Gave me the chills when he began to play Tales of a Kidd Funkadelic!
It's funny, I was in South Carolina on tour playing with the Bernie and the Woo Warriors and I called Moog and told them I was in their generally vicinity playing a show with him, and the guy on the phone did not even know who Bernie Worrell even was! I literally had to explain to him who he was I had to bring up anything George Clinton - P-Funk related albums and tunes, even "Flashlight! It was breathtakingly quite surreal.
I went from "holy crap this is killer," to speechless at the 8:00 mark. Bernie was the Hendrix of electronic keyboards. Nobody could what he just did. Not even Herbie.
+Keith Jackson "Nobody could what he just did. Not even Herbie." No disrespect to Mr. Worrell, but I'm not hearing anything particularly impressive or original here in this clip. @8:00 he is just adding a bit of modulation to the bass sound. Anybody that knows a little bit about playing synthesizer can do that, including me ;D. And Herbie Hancock is an amazing keyboard player. His playing is generally on quite a different level than what we're hearing here.
Bernie Worrell was a genius. If you have not seen "Bernie Worrell On Earth" on RUclips, please do. Bootsy Collins and George Clinton explain how Bernie Worrell literally created the Parliament Funkadelic sound, first heard on FLASHLIGHT. Also why George Clinton arranged the vocals the way he did.
Bernie died June 24, 2016. He gave lots of joy with P Funk. RIP Bernie.
R.I.R. rest in Moog music . Truly a legend of Funk that will be forever remember and imitated for eons to come .
He was so Cold!!!
Damn, RIP one of the greats.
Rest In Peace troubled soul.

same, i fucking love my model d. about to get the k2 for even more crazy combinations using both synths.
Bernie was Jimmy Hendrix on keyboards
Bernie was BERNIE!
Any brother man tryna be Hendrix of this & Hendrix of that, even today. Bernie & Bootsy grew out & set their own trends
💯❤
Absolutely!
Saying you might as well pay attention!!!
Bernie maximized the moog! He made it do stuff that was legendary. His P-funk work can't be duplicated. He was at the top of the food chain with them synthesizers, period! Hate he's gone.

Ubiquitous Reverser Congrats on the get! I know about *finally* getting an elusive piece. :)

Kudos to Bob Moog for helping Bernie(and so many other keyboard players) find the Funk.
Thank you Mr. Worrell for the musical knowledge, much respect and RIP.
Got to give credit to Jim, Scott and Bill Hemsath too. They were the architects of the Minimoog more than Bob was.
Songs:

02:50 - One Nation Under A Groove, by Funkadelic
05:25 - Good Times by CHIC
07:50 - Tales Of Kidd Funkadelic, by Funkadelic
I think the 3rd one was Ray Parker Jr. Still in the Groove
Wakeel Allah I doubt he would play Ray’s song when it was a copy of the song originally done by Bernie’s group (Funkadelic).
@@wakeel7 That's what I heard also ! For those who like to groove by Raydio!

One of the best videos ive watched on youtube. Was just buzzing to see Bernie sat there at a moog jamming. But when he bust out flashlight i genuinely smiled from ear to ear. Thanks for upload.
My pleasure. I'm just glad I was there to capture and share the moment.
Basically, this is the cat that invented synth-bass.
Edit: Okay, maybe not "invented", but he was certainly a pioneer and a driving force in getting that type of groovy Minimoog sound into the public ear.
I should imagine it would've been Jean Jacques Perrey or someone from that era...(late 60's)
U forgot stevie wonder.
No.
he didnt invent it he just made it FUNKY
Adam Borseti 😐 No!
OMG I am family to this person
well just know that your relative Bernie brought a lot of joy to a lot of people.
He was a great musician. One of a kind.
A true LEGEND!
God gave him something extra. Dont make sense! Mis him dearly.
Hopefully you are proud. Bernie was not only a gifted musician, he was associated with a gang of talented writers, performers and musicians. RIP BW

If there's a 2nd place it respectively goes to Junie Morrison.
nobody plays flashlight like Bernie
True dat!
This can't be duplicated. His movements, sounds of how he modulates the effects are truly one of a kind. Inspirational to the fullest.
goddamn !! the funk is just oozing from that keyboard.
All time legend. Saw him with Talking Heads in 1982. God bless him. RIP.

R.I.P. Mr. Worrell.
