Hurricane Nicole is collapsing several homes into the Atlantic Ocean, and threatening more, even a condo building. Damage initially caused by Hurricane Ian is being finished off by Nicole. Many of the homes that are collapsing were built in the 1960s.

I’d like to see a picture of those homes when they built in 1963. My guess is there was a large beach and sand dunes between the homes and the water. This isn’t erosion due to one or two storms-it’s 60 years of erosion.
Definitely, but the storms greatly accelerate the progression. Florida is flat swamp land surrounded by ocean dead center in the hurricane zone, it's inevitably going to dissapear one day.
60 years of sea level rise. 3mm per year × 60 = 180 mm.
Imagine it in another 50 or 60 years
That's exactly what it is. This time they didn't replenish the sand fast enough, so it worked it's way to the rest.
But it is happening much faster now!
My father used to tell me " You don't OWN a house. A house OWNS you"! Dad built houses to put himself through college. Dad was right about that! 🤗
Wow, what your father said, is so true
Ya, true. This is my fifth house; just a place to crash. A person needs a place to live, yet not be attached to things of this world.
When will folks figure out...NOT TO BUILD YOUR HOUSE ON SAND!!
Your "COMMON SENSE!!" Comment....
is So TRUE!!! 👍💓😊💓👍
And the all of the city and county commissioniers in Florida keep on approving for developers and homeowners for this.
Never
It's built on freaking pillions 2000 telephone poles get banged into the ground under the home still don't mean it ain't going into the ocean
When companies refuse to insure them at our expense.
I lived in Florida for forty-nine years and this has always perplexed me. I want desperately to understand why anyone would willfully choose to build their house on sand...next to an ocean. Someone please explain it to me.
And then rebuild!
Ocean view 💙
Insurance?
Most of these houses are secondary houses and VRBOs so it's not like their homeless now
Daytona had such a wide beach before. I am flabbergasted on how much is gone. 😱
As beaches went it was beautiful. This is what happens though when you dredge/canal/dam/overbuild on the nicest peninsula/ piece of land on earth. The ecosysyem is destroyed. it will continue to get smaller. You can thank the army cor of "engineers".
@@Maybe1Someday Exactly. It is horrendously overbuilt here in the Myrtle Beach, SC area.
I have never understood why people would build this close to the ocean, Over years there will be erosion and it is only time until the sea takes over.
As someone that was born and raised in Florida, I have known all my life [60+ years] if you build on the Ocean front this WILL happen. So vary sadly at one time people could go down A1A from St. Augustine to Daytona and have a full view of Beach and Ocean. Now the only thing you get to see is the back of houses jammed inches apart or a Condo. Many of these houses are only for making money as she said. I don't want to see anyone lose their home and things but many of these are not homes they are cash cows for the owner /property management company . Even worse after they flood the Ocean front with all these houses and Condos then they demanded the Beaches to be cut off from the public going in front of "Their" houses as it's bad for their business. Again it's very bad when people lose their homes and have great hardships but when a property management company has a set back it's not so painful to me. They will in fact just rebuild to get the cash cow flowing again.
They should not be allowed to build so close to the ocean.
Same with around lakes. People are like ducks who want to be near water AND pay high taxes for the pleasure.
That’s what I remember when I was younger it was so exciting to see the beach and ocean I loved it
@@anaserrano1149 yep, sort of hard to feel sorry for so called cash cows…
well, some people dont have common sense, esp. the older ones. they just wanna enjoy the view and this is what they get.
These homes still without repair,to close to the ocean there's a saying " Whatever you take from the ocean, soonest or later ,the ocean will take back from you, unfortunately, the towns shouldn't never had given permits to the contractors, to build homes so close to the beachfront.
Don't build on barrier islands. These are buffers for main lands
Only a realtor would try to sugarcoat coastal erosion.
FYI = There are many wealthy politicians who own ocean front HOMES too (and they cry climate change all the time but still own those homes).
Just pointing 👉 out the hypocracy.
Why aren't the Geoengineers doing what they're supposed to be doing - which is stopping these storms⁉️
President Johnson in the 60s announced = We can control the weather‼️
These people are small business men,I do not think she sugar-coated it.

Ian alone didn’t cause this. Matthew in 2016 and Irma in 2017 took away a LOT of beach. Followed by a series of Northeasters. They never did any beach restoration after those storms. Ian and Nicole took the rest. Very sad. 😰
Florida's Coastlines are pretty well developed . So sadly Hurricanes will only continue to cause more and every increasingly expensive damage .
That's nature for ya.
Mother Nature doing as she does.
Mother Nature is just done with us. She’s trying to get rid of us by floods, fires, volcanoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes! Whatever she’s got in her toolbox.

My heart goes out to everyone that has lost everything west coast and east now, I live in Miami but this will still keep happening every time we get a hurricane.
the most heartbreaking part of this is that none of these people seen to be aware that 95% of Florida will be PERMANENTLY under water in a few decades. None of them have bothered to research the area, or bothered to research sea rise, its truly heartbreaking...
@@mariadowler1279 95%!of Florida will not be permanently under water. Sure in a few decades there will be some parts under water but not even remotely close to 95%. Keep showing how uneducated you are as a you claim that you did research.
@@mariadowler1279 it’s not so much Florida under water which it will probably happen eventually as living in barrier islands and so close to the ocean now. The ocean takes no prisoners, there’s a saying in Spanish that says she takes back what belongs to her and return’s what doesn’t. And that’s true usually after a hurricane part of shipwrecks start washing up on the beaches.
@@mariadowler1279 I am not real sure who came out with this theory but it has been going around for sometime now. Yes it's just a theory someone came up with and as always the masses jump on the band wagon.
What happened on the West coast?
Water weighs approximately 62.4 pounds per cubic foot, the pressure exerted by 1 foot of water is 62.4 / 144 =. 433 pounds per square inch. Consider the force of the wave + Wind force acting on Water - impacting the foundation of the home, and one will have a pretty good idea why this occurred- Please do not return to this location to live.
This was just a cat1 can you imagine if it would of been A3 or 4 😩
Yeah same thing would've happened......come on now.
@@ohiosteel1850 but worse...
@@fitosanitago6574 WOW you're right. Now go rush and build another house on Sand, on the coast, where a future hurricane will do the same thing.........Smart.....
WOW not a bad idea 💡
Huh so that’s what happens when you over build on the water?
That's what happens when buildings are built for existing times. Terrains don't remain the same, hence new building codes.
Quit building RIGHT NEXT to the ocean. You take a huge risk of losing everything by doing this. Especially in a hurricane zone.
What a bummer! It appeared this started happening before Nicole made landfall, did Ian loosen up the soil or was there washout from that storm? Edit, she answered my question, great interview, thanks!
Ian tore up that area and not just Volusia County pretty Sad there Insurance money couldn't touch what it would take with new codes the cost to build new sea walls Big Bucks.
@@FendergtrJam Wait until FEMA tells folks who lost homes in Houston TX that they only pay pennies on the dollar for losses. It happened to homeowners twice 😡
The houses were built on sand dunes!
It's sand.
Everyone understands the geology and risks that water front property has. Just like to study the science of weather and erosion while having compassion for those who worked hard to obtain their slice of paradise to watch it get washed away.
It’s very heartbreaking to see your homes destroyed . But, maybe people should stop living on the beaches like this ..
And near forests or trees on the west coast
Great interview.
Yes, she was concise and well spoken
Excellent reporting. We need more boots on the ground reporters who talk to real people in the areas their reporting in.And also less unintelligent comments
Rebuild? Only to wait for the next one, guess they haven't had enough yet
How horrible for these people too lose tere homes, too a place they love🙏🙏🙏
Do not build east of A1A. Leave that land to protect Florida and for people to enjoy.
A1A is falling into the ocean too!
I used to not agree with that idea...but at some point we are going to have to address keeping barrier islands as barriers again...
That is so sad. I hope no one was hurt. Thanks for the update. Stay safe out there.
set building standards to discourage rebuilding. Let Florida's natural seashore return to nature. That gives access to everyone, not just a few business partners that own rentals....
And stop insuring these homes that encroach on the beach.
There should not be any building on the edge of the ocean. Insurance rates go up when this happens. If the rebuild it needs to be on their own dime.
I agree. Same thing is happening around the great lakes and then they complain cause they lost their homes.
They shouldn't have took away any sand before the hurricane came in. There's a video with them taking sand out from that same spot.
Well, someone once told me, the wise man built his house alone a Rock. I love living on the beach, but know that's it going to move. So sand is never a stable place.
Most of those homes were built in the 1950s and 60s.
We just went through Ian. Our house got completely flooded 2 feet of water. It's completely gutted now waiting to start construction. And now this storm not even close to as bad, but still some homes being destroyed. Insurance companies probably slitting their wrists.
Let's build a house one inch from the ocean
1 inch?
That’s what my husband said
They built a house on the beach sand at the beach in florida. What could go wrong ?
@@lindagailedwards6230 smart man
@@lindagailedwards6230 he’s sorta right 😂
After 7 hurricanes in living in Florida this is why we move back to New Hampshire. It's beautiful when it's beautiful but when it's angry it's horrible and life-threatening!
The way our weather has changed so drastically, especially in the last ten to twenty years, any home building near ANY TYPE of body of water is Risky. Sad. Very sad. 😔✌️❤️🦋🙏
P.S Edit :. I just read the 8 comments left. Maybe y'all haven't been affected by coast line living, maybe you have. I have. My family has. Friends have. I guess I'm Too Young to remember when houses dropped off into riverbeds or were swept away from ocean currents in a bad storm, while I was growing up. But I'm old enough to say that I volunteered to rehab homes after Katrina hit, 1,000 miles from my home. And I'm old enough to hear the frightened voice of a six year old as his parents were sand bagging their river home before moving to the second floor. I'm old enough to remember how my aunt and uncle lost their entire front yard of their home that was built 100 years before on a SMALL lake front. So my sister wasn't able to have her wedding pictures there as planned and my relatives felt forced to sell their home of many years. Yes, the Earth is changing. And what I'm aware of has been happening during My lifetime. Brightest Blessings. 😉✌️❤️🦋🙏
Sand loss along the east coast has happened for hundreds of years. Just go to Cape Cod and look at the old well pipes along the beach where houses used to be on top of the dunes that haven't been there for years. The earth is constantly changing. Nothing can stop that.
It's always been like this. Only difference is that we have social media and the internet to remind us every single day, so it feels new
Wake up fool. The weather hasnt changed. if so, prove it then. Quit quoting crap you hear but refuse to verify.
President Johnson back in the 60's = We control the weather (etcetera, etcetera).
Obviously they aren't STOPPING these nasty weather EVENTS as promised, are they ....
Wakeup sheeple - engage your brains...
This isnt a drastic change, sand has always been eroded on all coastlines, and replaced. This wasn't repaired after Iam, stands to reason the water would come and reclaim.
Great video, hard to see the destruction in people's hearts.
That's sad. Hope everyone and all animals are safe.
Especially the animals!
Now the turtles can nest again!!!
Has Florida been targeted with "exotic weapons"? That actually is a phrase used in treaties. I've lived in SWFL for decades and no one has ever seen anything like this ever as long as people have been living in Florida.
Really? Key West was swiped away……the railroad to it was wiped away in the September 3, 1935 Labor Day storm. There have always been storms and there will forever be storms some worse than others. The population growth in Florida means more people affected therefore more sensational news stories.
Really? How long have you been keeping the records?
Oh no. That is heartbreaking. My prayers for these people
So sad they lost there homes. Hopefully Florida will not allow homes to be so close to ocean. They need a proper Sand Dune to help in future destruction.. Back up the homes from beach.
Why not? It's a free country and their money.
So sorry for those people. Wishing for the best and everyone will be safe.
I feel so bad for these homeowners. Prayers to stay safe. I live on the gulf side, and we are getting slammed with wind and rain, so I can imagine the east coast.
That’s a nice, Self serving crap comment you have there. Enjoy the “amens” and thumb’s ups from other fake people.
This gives a whole new meaning to the 'open concept' in design.
Poor property management, Should have been worried days before.
Lol typical "We didn't have time to shore up the wall" Ian was weeks ago lady.
Definitely sucks! The shoreline keeps receding so this was bound to happen eventually. Hopefully the homeowners are okay and have good insurance. Praying for those displaced from the storm
Some of these homeowners are so rich that they don't need insurance... you would be surprised at the wealth around these beaches. If their home gets destroyed, they easily build another one. No big deal if you can afford the loss.
@@JoeGator23 true! Definitely doesn’t make it less sad though.
Now i know why my homeowners insurance is going up before people have build right up to waters edge
An agent once told my husband very long ago, that every homeowner pays for whatever disaster we have.....
My home insurance with Farm Bureau here in north Florida went up $6000, so I switched to USAA.
My heart goes out to these people for their losses. Its all very sad .
I’m from New Smyrna Bch and the homes along our cost look the same this is absolutely devastating Iv lived here my whole life and have never seen it like this prayers to our neighbors 🙏🙏
And this was barely a Cat 1, just shows that you cannot compare storms, each one is different.
Exactly. Same for earthquakes.
Excellent observation!
I grew up close to New Smyrna beach in the sixties. Used to be big wide beach with beautiful sand dunes and sea oats between the house s and the beach. They used to let people drive on beach in New Smyrna but not Daytona. Daytona used to have big boardwalk with carnavel . I wonder how all that has changed. I moved to North Florida 40 years ago. Looks pretty bad for us Florida residents. My insurance company went bankrupt and I spent $ 30000 on repairs to get insurance again. Needed to do the repairs. My roof could have made a few more years but when I told them I was gonna replace it I got insurance.
I am really glad to hear when the homes were built as I got a bit upset with ppl in the comments being so horrible about these peoples homes being destroyed almost like they deserved them for living ocean side. I pointed out that most of these homes are old well older than projections for climate change and beach erosion. Not that if they were newer ppl would deserve this but they would have had an idea of the risk. If a home has been there since 1960s or even 1980s you havent much reason to think itll fall into the ocean now
..... It's STILL NEXT TO THE OCEAN no matters " when it was built " ..... why were they even allowed to build there in the first place just because somebody wants to make money ,selling and building homes on oceanfront property ; people should know you can't build your house on sand.... it's happened in California, it's happened a lot of places where the land is not devised to support dwellings,by its very nature. And secondly people should have blocked them doing all that you're taking away the natural beauty of the ocean and for others to enjoy it all you see now you want to look at the ocean.. guess what you get to see.. ,???
Houses and condos built right on the ocean .... gee that's nice.
Why would someone build this close to the ocean??..... seriously??
no no no , keep building you overpriced house right on the beach. then be shocked when it gets washed away cause of erosion due to a hurricane
Why would some build that close to the beach whe they know Florida is a hurricane magnet?
Inspectors taking $$$??
People are saying the sea level is rising in Florida. Maybe it’s the ground sinking and not the water rising?
WHY DO YOU LIVE THERE????! 🤷
hate snow
@@stanleyjohnson2860 I hate snow too but I don't think it's wise to live in areas known for hurricanes. I believe the coasts should be visited by tourists during non-hurricane season not lived on. Florida gets hit by hurricane's constantly but they don't learn. Same thing goes with the southern coast. The coastline should be for everyone to visit not lived in by the privileged few and now they're losing their homes and I don't care.

Building that close to the ocean will ALWAYS be a risk and isn't particularly smart.
I've lived in Florida for 50 years, this shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone living on the coastline! When you build on the ocean where hurricanes are going to eventually hit, this is what happens!! Florida has had a few bad storms over the last 60 years and people don't think when they build this will happen!
That's what you get for building at the beach why don't you just get out of there permanently

In Matthew 7, Jesus said everyone who hears his words and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
Then he went on to say everyone who hears his words and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand (Matthew 7:24-26).
I’ll never understand why people build homes like this?
They lost the seawalls and beach during hurricane Ian.
