I tried the recipe but mine were not crispy. I used olive oil instead and my air fryer had no setting at 385. So I used 390. Maybe these 2 variables were wrong for me.
haha, thanks! They are actually just middle-grade kitchen knives (a pretty generic brand here in Canada). I'd say more importantly is how sharp the knife is and how/where you hold the knife. :)
The corn starch is optional anyway, I have a friend who makes similar sweet potato fries in her convection oven, they are crispy enough and she doesn't use any corn starch. She just puts the fries on a rack over a sheet tray so that the air can circulate all around them. I m sure her recipe would work just as well in an air fryer. Corn starch helps the oil stick by drying to surface out, if you don't use it, just pat the cut fries dry with a paper towel before adding the oil and spices. Hope that helps. Of course, you could always try the other starch options to see if they work for you.
Yes, you can use potato starch instead of corn starch. They can be used interchangeably for this recipe, but you can always experiment with the exact amount to get a level of crispiness you like. And as Allazander said, the starch is optional... we often make sweet potato fries without adding any corn starch and they end up crispy (as long as we don't overcrowd the air fryer).
@@simplyairfryer - thanks! Just to follow up, I’ve now confirmed potato starch does work for this as well. It’s a fine line to get them crispy but not dried out, but when I get it right (usually around 16 minutes at 380°F) they come out really nice.
Thanks for your comment! Yeah, you definitely don't have to measure precisely if you know your preference... but keep in mind that some people prefer having exact measurements. If we had said "pepper to taste" or "a pinch of pepper", we would have received comments saying "How much is that? That's not specific enough". Just trying to make our videos useful for as many as possible. Let us know how you like the recipe :)
You seem to find it absurd that the creator includes 1/8 tsp as a measurement. This comment just comes off as rude/ignorant, 1/8 tsp is a fairly common measuring spoon size in baking for things like baking soda or in this case spices. Also nothing is stopping you from simply estimating, It’s just as easy as eyeballing a tablespoon. If you’ve looked at any other recipes online they likely have similar measurements.
Yeah! Have you never tried them with mayo? We've seen them served with aioli (garlic mayo) quite a few times in restaurants. It might not be a super common dipping sauce in North America but it's very popular in Western Europe - especially where French fries were invented (Belgium/Netherlands region). Also very popular as a dip in Germany! Sometimes you'll see fries served in a paper cone with a massive dollop of mayo (or flavored mayo). 😀
If you're referring to Celsius, it's about 195°C. Even though we use metric here in Canada for most things, when it comes to cooking Fahrenheit is commonly used. It's also about 469 Kelvin, should anyone be curious!
You can always modify the recipe to suit your taste/what you have available at home. Obviously we'd recommend the spices as instructed, but if you don't have paprika, don't sweat it! Try them without. :)
You just got the wrong ones. Sweet potatoes come in multiple varieties, the orange ones are more common and higher in Vit A/other nutrients than the white. White sweet potatoes are more likely to crumble and are dryer. White sweet potatoes would not be a good choice for this recipe as they'll likely fall apart once cooked while orange sweet potatoes are perfect for it. Orange sweet potatoes are not the same as yams.

Just made these and I’m actually a chef so this was good to see the exact measurements the way it’s supposed to be made. Thank you subbed ✅

did them and they where perfect
Thank you for recipes
It's our pleasure - hope your sweet potato fries turned out great! 😊
Man! What kind of knife is that you're using? I've never seen anybody cut through a sweet potato that easily!

Can a different starch (like potato or possibly arrowroot) be substituted for the corn starch to achieve the same crispness? (Reason: corn allergy)

Can I use cornflakes ?? Or flour ?

I'd stick to this exact recipe. I subbed the sweet potatoes with carrots and it was not good at all.
Thank you great vid
Lovely recipe
Thanks so much! Happy Air Frying :)
Thanks, very good 😋
I like how you tell people to eat them off a plate..like some people need to be told that haha. Cheers bud
haha, yeah. But I stopped short of "insert the fries into your mouth, move your jaw up and down, and then swallow". :P
I use coconut oil 😊instead of seed oil.
I agree, seed oils are bad but Avocado oil is not a seed oil.
1/8 tsps of pepper - common. Thank you for the recipe. Gonna try it. But not measuring the spices like like its rocket science.

Come on*
the spice must flow
@@simplyairfryerThank you for the measurements I definitely need something to go by when seasoning

Mayo as a dippin sauce 🫥
With mayo? 😮

@simplyairfryer will give it a try lol, thx.
What’s 385F in real units?

Too bad only corn starch is optional. I don't have any paprika powder

Nice
Thanks, we think so too.
Frustrating as sweet potatoes were white inside. I think this requires yams.
You didn’t buy the right type of sweet potatoes. Probably Japanese sweet potatoes or something else, just try again.

With mayo🤢....that's wild...try melting some marshmallows
