Introduction of Lou Reed to the US. "The Velvet Underground & Nico", aka "The Banana Album", was produced by pop artist Andy Warhol, who also designed the unique Peel Here banana sticker cover. Nico was a German singer added to several songs, but she soon went her own way. Lou Reed became a pioneer of the art rock genre.

“Heroin” from the same album would be a perfect pairing with “Waiting for the Man.” If you want Lou Reed solo, listen to “Walk on the Wild Side.”

Velvet Undergrounds "Sweet Jane' is also a great one..

He's never early/He's always late/The first thing you learn is that you always have to wait.
    Same as it ever was.

You have San Francisco in ‘67 the summer of love, and then you have New York and the Velvet Underground doing, well, something a bit different. Way pre-punk!

"TVU" was notorious for writing about taboo subject matter. And they were constantly throwing shade on conventional rock music. And their unique sound and experimental approach to performing and songwriting had a big impact on bands like U2, David Bowie, and Nirvana just to name a few. But this band also played a big role in creating punk-rock and new-wave, as well as blending elements of pop, rock, Avant-Guard and electronic music together, which paved the way for alternative -rock. Here's a live performance, if interested "Lou Reed - Dirty Boulevard". Nice reaction, thanks💜✌

This is pre-punk. VU paved the way for 70s punk.

This album, as seminal as it proved to be, was not a commercial success when it came out.
Don't forget this was the flower child era in rock, they didn't want to hear about drug addiction ,sado-masochism, etc. in the dirty city.
Time proved what a musical genius Lou Reed was, and the album was influential for subsequent eras.

Lou Reed "Walk on the Wild Side" solo. "Venus in Furs" from this album or anything from their White Light/White Heat album for some real proto punk.

    Try "Venus in Furs".

Tip for Velvet Underground fans: there's a better version of this on the double album 1969: Velvet Underground Live. The whole album is just great.

Time to dive into Lou Reed I guess. Try "Sweet Jane" and "Rock and Roll" from "Transformers" for starters, but he has 50 years of great music, so feel free to get lost a little.

Absolutely you need to listen to "Heroin" from this album, "I'm Set Free" from the self-titled album (their third), and, if you're really digging it by that point, "Sister Ray" from the album _White Light/White Heat_ which is just scorched earth. As far as commercial success, this had none... and it's arguably the most influential rock album every made.

For more of the same proto-punk sound, check out Iggy Pop and the Stooges - I Wanna Be Your Dog.

Try their song “Rock and Roll”. Another great and important proto punk band is the Stooges try “Loose” and the MC5 with “Kick Out the Jams”

Great song and album. Their other albums like Loaded and self titled are at least as good. Amazing band.
