As an Atlanta fan, I can say his first year, I was super excited to see what he could do. He took a 4-12 team that had just lost a bunch of pieces into an average 7-9 team. The next season we were expected to be one of the worst teams in the league, yet under Smith we performed...average. Then, last season, we were actually expected to win the NFC south with a ton of new pieces and a roster that actually wasn't terrible and we got...average. Here's the problem with Smith. If you watched the games, you'd know he set up a great defense and solid run game, but he could never put together a passing game. Maybe it was the lack of QB strength, but Smith simply failed to adapt to average QBs the way other coaches have done.
I don’t think he ever had even an average QB. Not a Falcons fan so correct me if I’m wrong.

@@Gtu57 Matt wasn't completely washed his last year in Atlanta he threw for almost 4000 yards and while he only threw 20 TDs he was still good enough for the Falcons to do what they needed him to.

As a Titans fan Authur had a prime Derrick Henry and Prime AJ Brown they made him look way better than he was!
Or, maybe, he is a good OC but a bad HC. That happens frequently. Look at the Titans offensive ranking before, during, and after Smith.

@@thevortexgamer2677 Right. Also Dick Lebeau, Wade Phillips, Todd Haley, even Mike Martz was better off as a coordinator. Sometimes the extra responsibilities of a HC make it a poor/mediocre fit.

As a life long falcons fan, same.
He is a good coach…but a poor head coach. As OC he is pretty great. He understands the direction the NFL is going, and is forward thinking. His tenure in Atlanta was terrible but he also had to dumb down his offense because of Ridder which ended up with him getting fired. His motivation of players is questionable so this landing spot with one of the best to motivate players might be really good for him.

@@Dnasty0118 a head coach does not have all power in an organization in terms of drafting. It’s very often a team process and mostly falls on the GM’s and scouting departments. The picks of a QB was a smart pick to try and transition. By all measure you should be taking shots on QB’s when you draft if you don’t have your starter. It’s why they Just Took Penix after signing Kirk. Saying it was definitively “his choice” is willfully ignorant to how these organizations and teams actually run. It’s a business and they don’t let entire rosters collapse because of a head coach. Maybe a couple teams…but not the Falcons. Just look at Cowboys work. Do you think Mike McCarthy makes the decision on who the cowboys draft? Could he have fought for him absolutely…but I cannot find any meaningful report or Interview stating this so I’m guessing this is a misunderstanding of the process by you. That said I will put in the effort to try and find that and get back to you.

He didn’t have a quarterback. Without a quarterback nobody can win in the NFL
His pass concepts were horrible. You'd see 2 or 3 receiving targets running routes within 5 yards of each other. Got offense skill position players early in the draft and used them as decoys instead of playing to their strengths or scheming them into the game plan . And his ability to evaluate the QB position was disappointing after all the hype of helping resurrecting Ryan tannelhill career. Also for being a offensive minded coach that was run first mentality type guy. He would stray away from the run and expect subpar QBs to carry the team when the game would be a 1 score game smh.
As a Falcons fan I was on the fence about Smith, however the games that sent me over the edge were the Bucs game at home, followed by the PANTHERS. 2 games we SHOULD have won. I about had a stroke at the panthers stadium after sitting in terrible weather just to loose .
I think Sam Monson and Steve Palazzolo described it best. Arthur Smith doesn't want to come out on Sunday and do what they're expecting, but sometimes the thing they're expecting is the thing they're expecting because it's the thing that actually gives you the best chance to win.
As a Falcons fan I thought it was a wonderful kind of day when we fired Arthur Smith
Arthur Smiths tenure in Atlanta can be perfectly summed up in 1 play. I don't remember which game it was in, but Atlanta ran a 5 WR set with only one WR on the field. They had Bijan and Allgeier, as well as Pitts and Jonnu and Mack Hollins. 5 WR set. Only one actual WR, and it's not even your WR1. Arthur Smith ladies and gentlemen...

Art is my guy!!! That was my college Teammate. Art got his first start as a GA at UNC after he graduated. Man look checkout all the coaches on that UNC Roster. Joe daily, TJ yates, ben Johnson, Will lawing; etc... oh and malarkey son was a LB at UNC while he was HC for the titans.

As a Titans fan he was okay but he didn't really have a good feel for play calling. Look at his screen calls during that time. Good guy and an okay coach. I wish him well.
Way I see it. He can built a sturdy run game and a solid enough defense. But no matter what the talent pool is, he can’t put a great passing game together. He looked good in Tennessee because he had Derrick Henry. Outside of that, he’s mid period

Oh gosh, the fact that the Steelers chose to roll with him after ridding themselves of Matt Canada, my guess is either the Steelers struck out with the guys they wanted, or "anyone is better than MC" was what they went with when handing Smith the contract.
Look, I will never wish ill-will to division rivals, but I am now seriously concerned for the Steelers offense. Based on how Smith used guys like Pitts and Robinson, my fear is that Smith will try to be "cute" or "fancy fancy" with calling plays for Harris and Freiermuth. I don't know, but judging from MY experiences watching him (so take it with a grain of salt), Smith seems to be overthinking his approaches, either cause he needs to fight the nepotism rumors, or to justify his own draft choices. Perhaps taking a step back to the coordinator ranks will help refine his thinking, but my concerns are still there.

As a Falcons fan Arthur Smith raised the floor but lowered the ceiling for us and honestly I would’ve given him another year because he performed well the first 2 years and had a horrible quarterback his 3rd year but I do get why we fired him cause last year was an awful coaching job

What did Arthur Smith do wrong? Probably plenty, but this video does not even attempt to provide answers to that question until more than 10 minutes into an 11 minute video. Most of the run time is a rehashing of biographical and historical facts, and there is barely any reference to -- let alone analysis of -- anything Arthur Smith did as a coach. Nothing is said about his scheme or strategy, beyond mentioning at the very end of the video that he made some very weird decisions about how to use his best players in 2023 -- which everyone has been talking about for months. The Falcons drafts are criticized, but Smith is the HC, not the GM, and the video doesn't tell us whether or to what extent Smith was involved in the drafts -- including how much blame he should bear for the Falcons winding up with Ridder and Heineke as their QB options, or having no pass rush. (The Falcons didn't need Smith's help to draft poorly, they've been doing it for years.) Smith's record is hard to evaluate based on W-L records -- which this video relies heavily on -- because he inherited a favourable situation in Tennessee and a horrible one in Atlanta. After watching the video, I know nothing about Smith's coaching that I didn't know before. He might be a "complete failure" (strong words in an era where his peers include Jeff Saturday and Nathaniel Hackett) but this video completely fails to convince me.
Arthur Smiths success came from King Henry and AJ Brown being talented players. Their skill set made his scheme successful. When he had the opportunity to create his own team to his style, he failed. He didn’t prioritize the QB nor did he utilize his key position players appropriately. I’m glad he’s out of Atlanta
There was no one in Atl with an over long term plan.
They should have traded Ryan right away and began the rebuild or kept Ryan while drafting his replacement.

As a saints fan and obviously I hate Atlanta with a passion, I watched art very closely during his time in Tennessee and the things he did with tanne and Henry taking them to the championship game. He did well his first year in atl to that team was in shambles before he came in. He just got to weird with the under utilisation of pitts, London, bijan. Mark my words Pittsburgh might not be amazing but he’s gonna have that offense doing well, he’s just not a good decision maker when it comes to being a HC. If he can learn under tomlin maybe he’ll get a shot to take over for him at one point but other then that i can’t see him getting another shot unless they do crazy well

Tbh, it wasn't his fault because GM Terry Fontenot didn't take proper players that match Arthur Smith's offense system. Terry is same person who took Michael Penix Jr. despite he signed Kirk Cousins for $160 million over 4 years ,so go figure. I hope Arthur will have second chance to be head coach as long as he lands in right team as long as GM will take players that match his offense scheme.

It starts and end with QB. If you can answer that question for any coach you are not going to be successful, end of discussion.
Coaches don't decide draft picks, that's the GM and sometimes owner. Coaches give their opinions, but do not make the final decision. When the GM and coach aren't on the same page then you get results like this.
Further let you know that smith wasn’t the guy for atl, and most GMs collaborate to get the HC what he needs
Yeah exactly, but at the same time can't sit here and say he blew his own draft picks. I'm sure he would have wanted defense or an actual QB but they just kept drafting weapons for their awful QB.

Man this generation of football fans don't really analyze well. There was way more to Art Smith than his final season. He did awesome with what he had in 21 & 22. We exceeded expectations those years. 23 was his first year with a strong roster but his QB was not ready. With expectations and a weak QB, Art overcompensated with play calling and there was a lot of overthinking which didn't look good at all. I think he deserved another year based on his first 2 years. The fans got way too emotional.

This a BS take full of fallacies. Arthur Smith's issue was that he didnt sell the house for a decent QB. Those dudes played hard for Arthur Smith and he had strong command of the locker room. Look at the film. Arthur Smith offense was able to move the ball tremendously well in SPITE of having a sub par quarterback play. He bet his future on a third round QB and it failed. But you are absolutely out of your mind if you think his phone wasn't ringing off the hook when he was fired. Arthur Smith is a top offensive mind and play caller in the game. Only a casual would say otherwise.
