This is a tune I wrote for my Mother after learning of her immigration story from County Clare in Ireland to New York. I renamed the melody "Longing For Home" and we recorded it the Cherish the Ladies Album, Country Crossroads. Thanks to everyone for the lovely comments, much appreciated! Joanie

I know the feeling. Moved south when I was 18 and left my family behind for the sake of someone else. Then they left. I have my own wonderful family here now but will never loose the emptiness of life left behind. Song well done!
      Merry Christmas!
      Terry

Beautiful tune, Joanie, truly evocative of your mother's and all the Irish immigrants' contribution to the ongoing development of the great city of New York, 'when New York was Irish' and the many achievements of New York's Irish. Keep composing, playing and adding to the store of more wonderful Irish music.

I'm in a missing my mother kind of day - Dorothy Josephs LaBonte, and came to find music to bring me close to her. She would love this music, and this piece in particular. Her mother's roots were Galway, Ireland - Nora Madden, who also immigrated to NY, and planted her feet In Freeport, Long Island. I never met my grandmother, as she tragically passed away on Mother's Day when my mother was 15. Terrible heartbreak for Mom, and a day of great heaviness till the day my mother passed away, so we always celebrated my mother after Mother's Day....and many days before and after that as well. Mom's father was from Germany, and an alcoholic. After Grandmother Nora passed away, my mother had to live with her father's relatives. At the age of 19, she hopped on a train not knowing where it was going but just wanted to go somewhere - anywhere - to leave the sadness and control. She wanted to go as far away from home as she could. The train took her to New Hampshire, and the rest of her life is incredible having found the love of her life, and raised 4 children. She developed life-long friends, and taught piano to all the neighborhood children, and was the organist for the newly built Catholic Church in Concord, NH. She was a beautiful coloratura as well, and some from the town we grew up in still remember her voice to this day.
Thank you for those that have a moment of chat with me by reading my post. I appreciate your heart and listening ear.
Joanie - I'm thinking that finding you today was so Divine. Perhaps we might even be related. That would be such a delight. Nonetheless, I do believe my mother and my grandmother visited me today, and helped me find my way to you to let me know they are missing me too. I wrote my message before I realized the title of your song and who even composed it. I only saw "Cherish The Ladies" which was what pulled me to your video. It was when I went to replay your piece that I looked at the title and to see your name! It seems your mother and my grandmother had similar journeys, and they lived only about 50 minutes from each other in Ireland.
Thank you Joanie Madden. Such beautiful goose bumpy flute. The whole composition is so moving I cannot stop playing it. All the musicians performance to perfection. This was magical for me to be here with you, and this wonderful Celtic Group. I'm a fan for life. Love to you from New Hampshire. Kathleen (LaBonte)

This is an O'Riordan whistle. Joanie Madden is well known for playing O'Riordan and Burke whistles (well known that is by sad whistle players who follow these things :-D ).
She's a grand whistle player, but, personally I'm not a great fan of that style of whistle. Too "pure", not enough "grit" in the sound, no chiff, chirp and character for my taste etc (yeah, I know, that probably doesn't mean much to anyone not playing whistles).
