Traveled this route many, many times and it’s always a pleasure to see our beautiful coastline. Get a chance, go to Santa Barbara by train and that too is a thrilling ride. Comfortable, no hassle with the LA traffic and enjoy the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean.
Man, That brings back memories. I'm a Disabled Marine and used to be Stationed at Camp Pendleton. I would ride the Amtrak from Oceanside to San Diego . Well back over 35 years ago. I Hope to make it back one day for a visit . Sailed out of San Diego many time on Amphibious Ships to go on Westpacs.
I hadn't been on a train in over 50 years and was in San Diego this January. I got on at Oceanside and took it to LA then up the coast to Oakland and a bus to San Francisco. It really was fun. Coming back, I got to see what we passed in the dark on the way up.
I live in Irvine and pass by the train station all the time but never have any encouragement to take the Amtrack Pacific Surfliner. I am going to do it tomorrow. Thank you for sharing this amazing video.
@4vsbs2 The very beauty of train trips in the US is that you see the back of everything. You see the view you never see from cars and cannot see from planes 30,000 in the air.
Thank you, Mr. Harvey for the excellent video. When I was living in L.A. I took the surfliner to San Diego many times. Watching it brings back many, many memories. Thanks Again
bobby, thank you for rushing my memory back to when i was in the navy from 1987-1991; i was station at nas miramar via san diego, i would hop on this train from downtown san diego to santa ana every chance i get to visit my family so as long as i dont have duty. many time, i would hope on the train going back to san diego at santa ana; wow, all those stops, bring back fawn memory. great work and thank you.

Thanks a million for the trip. Remember when I was stationed in San Diego back in the mid 60's taking Santa Fe San Diegan home to L A almost every weekend then back again. Things sure have changed.
I remember Riding The Pacific Surfliner from Solana Beach to Santa Barbara as Northbound 769 and Return to Solana Beach from Santa Barbara as Southbound 774 with My Grandfather back on April 10-11 2003. It was Great Train Ride indeed. Heck, I ever rode with The Engineer in The Cab Car as Well!
I travelled from LA to SAN on 22 nd September, 2022 . Took the 3.10 pm train . Your narration and videos are excellent. There is something special traveling by train near the ocean than by road .. The closest point of the ocean matches with the map and my picture as Dona point . Just to add they give snacks and beverages complimentary in business class besides a nice cafe in one of the cars serving hot snacks . All in all a memorable trip indeed and a must visit at least with kids .
Excellent. I felt as if I was your co-traveller. The entire journey is shot so beautifully by you that one gets the actual feel of the places while watching the video. The blue waters of the Pacific are so soothing for the eyes in the midst of the concrete world all around the nearby stations. Thanks for the lovely experience..
Thanks for this. I live in Mohave desert Ca. But I'm from Orange and Santa Monica. I forgot how much I miss my ocean. I used to go to the beach weekly growing up. This makes me want to drive to nearest Amtrak station and get to San Clemente Beach ASAP! Last time I took the train to a Laguna Niguel to visit a friend. I miss her. I think I took Metro Link.
Another great video and thanks for posting it. That Station at San Diego looks as much like a church, as a Railway building. Very nicely designed. Jack.
Nice trip down memory lane for me, I used to get on at Oceanside and take the train to LA, never saw south of Oceanside on this trip so enjoyed that very much
This is an excellent video. We took the Surfliner in June of 2015 and stayed in Old Town. We had 12 gorgeous days in CA, and this was such an amazingly beautiful trip from LA to SD.
Thanks for sharing, brings back old memories when I use to fly out to San Diego all the time on business, always took a few extra days just to ride the Coaster from San Diego to Oceanside, great transportation :)
I have been very fortunate enough to be able to take this journey several times. The first part of the trip from Los Angeles is interesting. And once out of the industrial area of Los Angeles, the journey is extremely beautiful.
OK, seriously. I have a hard enough time to see people confusing your and you're, and there and they're and their. But ROAD instead of RODE? What the heck is next? Is proper English too complicated for today's American population?
This is an excellent video of Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner from LA's Union Station all the way down to San Diego's Santa Fe Depot. What a beautiful sight of the Pacific Ocean & the beach. I have taken this train many, many times and I felt like I was riding it again. Thanks for posting it!
Great video!! I am planning on taking the train from Los Angeles to San Diego in January. Great learning tool for me. Gives me a perspective of what to expect!!
A too excellent video!!!! About the only thing missing was some Chanteys' or Venturers' music from about 21:24 to 28:00! LOL! Again, a excellent video!!!! Thanks for posting!
Rode the Surfliner last year. took the Disney Cruise out of San Diego, so we headed over to Santa Fe station and headed to Disneyland Anaheim. We weren’t in a rush and I simply adore trains. My husband indulges my love for travel and bought us business class tickets, we were on the second floor with surf side windows. We brought snacks with us and had a little cocktail and we jiggle joggled up the coast to Anaheim. Which is a newer modern station unlike the historical Santa Fe Station. The ride to the Grand Californian from the Anaheim station was 15-20 minutes. I highly recommend the trip.
Very cool- I rode this ride years ago in 1990 when I was in California from what was then Anaheim Stadium- which was very different then as it was an enclosed stadium then- and all to San Diego with my now deceased aunt- it was a great ride- great scenery and to see it again is PRICELESS in a tough time. Thank you for posting this- sharing this- this really made my 2020-21- thank you.
Thank you for a great trip. We now live in Tucson, but visit San Diego again often.I love taking this trip. We usually leave from San Diego, go to L.A. for lunch across the street from Union Station on Olveira St. then get back on the train to San Diego. A great day trip.
very nice video, thanks, took it once from Santa Paula to Old Town S.D. years ago, beautiful, especially Del Mar...cool how the train goes to the beach!
Being a native of California all my life! I've never been on a train and can't wait to surprise my Wife for her Birthday weekend for a trip from LA to San Diego ❤️... Thank you soooo much for this video it will help me a lot! 🙏
The surfliner is legit my favorite train because I ride it almost every time I go on a train. Also my local station is Fullerton which has a lot of railfanners! Just amazing service.
Sadly, Anaheim doesn't have a large handful of railfanners like Fullerton does. I mean, why can't no one come to Anaheim to see the trains going by (either at ARTIC or on Santa Ana Street)?
Edward Travels Nice thought! Unfortunately, Union Station and LAX are many miles apart.. They are building for a airport/ train connection in the future however.
Just an added bit of info. San Diego County is double tracking from the OC County line all the way down to downtown SD. In addition, they will add a platform at Del Mar Fairgrounds for people to attend the SD County Fair AND the horse racing. No more having to depart at Solana Beach & take a shuttle bus to the fairgrounds. It is a few yrs away but it is coming!!
I would take that train from Lancaster and spend a few days att beach, fairgrounds and horse races. But I guess I gotta wait for covid to pass. Bummer.
I travel on the Pacific Surfliners from San Diego to Los Angeles & Oxnard when I’m ho,e in the San Diego area. I alternate my visits between Los Angeles & Ventura every other visit home to the San Diego area. When I go to Ventura I get off in Oxnard and take he number 6 Gold Coast Transit bus to Victoria Blue & Moon Drive to visit there in that part of Ventura. With the tracks in excellent condition, Amtrak can run the Pacific Surfliners from San Diego to Los Angeles in 90 minutes if the damned FRA would allow them to, that would maintain safety & at the same time increase ridership even more. Riding the Pacific Surfliner beats driving I-5/U.S.101 parking lots where people slow down when there is no accidents, no wet & foggy weather and no construction zones, this freeway slowing down is done on purpose.
I rode the Pacific Surfliner 7 times when they were called the San Diegans when they only went as far North as Los Angeles. I will be taking the Pacific Surfliner at a future time when I'm back in Southern California for a 4 day stay in the San Diego area. My trip will be round trip from San Diego to Oxnard.
When I and my wife were at the city of Temecula ,CA for five months in 2015, in my daughter's house we had chances to visit both the megestic cities of LA and SD many times along with our nephew, daughter, and grand daughters by road only.By watching your video I remember those green days.I don't know whether would I have the chance again to visit these beautiful cities and california. However, I express my sincere thanks to you for bringing back my memories._G.SHANMUGAM,TIRUVARUR-TANJORE, TAMILNADU,INDIA.
Road this route when I enlisted in the US Navy from Los Angeles. Two other recruits and I were given our enlistment packages at the Los Angeles Armed Forces Enlistment and Examination Station on Wilshire Blvd, road a city bus to Union Station, and headed south to the Recruit Training Command at the Naval Training Center, San Diego. Wonder how many other Navy recruits went to boot camp in this manner?
I took this train in 2014 from LA to San Juan Capistrano. I had the same harsh sounding conductor! I have rode all the Amtrak routes in the West and I thought his announcements were a put off for people riding the train for the first time. Otherwise, great video! Thanks for posting.

Me watching this over 100 time before my trip in a week
I live in Irvine and pass by the train station all the time but never have any encouragement to take the Amtrack Pacific Surfliner. I am going to do it tomorrow. Thank you for sharing this amazing video.
The surfliner is one of the best Amtrak trains in California. what I like about it is the beautiful scenery expecially passing through the beach.
Corey Williams I take the Pacific Surfliner every morning to school :)
@4vsbs2 The very beauty of train trips in the US is that you see the back of everything. You see the view you never see from cars and cannot see from planes 30,000 in the air.
@4vsbs2 cause it's not showing the entire trip if it did it'd be almost 2 hours I think
only hit a billion drunks and a shooting few times. lol
Very nice job, Mr. Harvey. I used to ride the train from San Diego to Fullerton when I was going to school. This brings back many memories.

Took the train from Fullerton to Oceanside 14 mos ago. Great trip and relaxing view.
Nicely done. Made the trip to LA and back in the early eighties with the single level San Diegans running the route.
thanks for the film. I live in Sydney Aus, and am doing this trip in April. Cannot wait!
Thanks a million for the trip. Remember when I was stationed in San Diego back in the mid 60's taking Santa Fe San Diegan home to L A almost every weekend then back again. Things sure have changed.

When I was a kid still am when it comes to trains, our family took a train out of Santa Ana to San Diego. Ever since then I have been a 'railfan'.
