As a giant Madonna fan and giant "Rebel Heart" fan, I feel forced to enter the fray. After careful consideration, the Avici-produced demo wins over the Kanye West-produced album version, and here's why: The accusation that Avici's version is dated is only semi-valid. Yes, it contains homages to 70s disco, 80s electro, and 90s techno, but what's novel here is that his "Wash Over Me" is an introspective ballad (and a good one) dropped into deliberately retro electronica while remaining listenable as a moving, intelligent ballad. Avici's mid-tempo pace feels right, and Kanye's decelerated version seems turgid, not to mention lost in a fog of echo. Kanye's slower rendition only comes alive in the song's despairing chorus, where some melancholia may be called for. Avici's comes alive in the gorgeous synth line that meanders through the song's verses. That a thoughtful poetic ballad could be credibly set to a house music throb IS what's novel here, despite the Pet Shop Boys' never-entirely-successful tries at this throughout their career. It's a shame about the Israeli hacker who leaked Madonna's "Rebel Heart" demos...but it's also a shame that the Material Girl and her team concluded that this sonic larceny meant some of her strongest new songs had to be re-imagined. Kanye West is a brilliant producer, but his latest album, "Yeesus," unfurls a dissonant dystopic hip hop sound painting that's at odds with Madonna's turn back to Tin Pan Alley tunefulness in songs like "Messiah," "Ghosttown," and "Joan of Arc." And "Holy Water," "Illuminati," and "Wash Over Me" are three songs (and counting) that sound better as their 90s throwback demo versions. To further complicate matters, Madonna released three versions of the "Rebel Heart" album, each with more songs than the next. In the regular album (non-deluxe) release, therefore, she's definitely missing some of her standout songs...like an tongue-in-cheek trip down memory lane with the rapper NAS called "Veni Vidi Vici," and a quiet but beautiful slice of R & B called "Heaven," and others. If I were allowed to cherry-pick from all the demos and all the recombinant versions of the "Rebel Heart" album, I could put together a 10-12 track album that would eclipse her dozen others and rank in the top ten albums by a woman in the rock era! "Rebel Heart" is Madonna's sprawling diverse "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road."
Austin Brumfield couldn't agree more. People say this song sounds dated ??!! Gimme a break. This version is magnificent, and the retro effects enhance the wonderful vocals. This era is very chaotic - from the songs, to the album versions, to the stage personas, it's all very messy. She doesn't seem to have a clear idea of what to do: she sings GHOSTTOWN one day, then B*TCH I'M MADONNA the other, then she dresses like a bullfighter, and the day after she looks like a rapper.
I will never truly forgive Madonna for changing this and the other songs from Rebel Heart. The original versions were SOOOOO much better. Truly a waste. Even if they were leaked she should have still released the album the way it was intended to be released. That is what a TRUE artist would have done...(stuck to their guns)! Instead the album that was released was watered down and bland as hell. It is almost painful to listen to and almost puts me to sleep! I now question her as an artist for changing her original intentions just because some moron leaked the songs because great artists do not change anything just because someone tries to spoil their art...Oh how I mourn what a great album it could have been had everything not been altered...😢
this is an unfinished messy dance song tho there’s no original version they’re unfinished songs they weren’t meant to be released after avicii she worked with many more producers
this is the original version, I think so, it sounds better than the version in the album, the version in the album sounds with a low voice and in some parts they added a robotic sound for the voice, it's like joan of arc, I prefer the demo
I wonder if tracks like this one could have survived if the album hasn't been leaked... I think she changed it so people would not expect the same thing.
I was wondering why this version of the song is so much better than the "official version" on the Madonna YT channel, but I see in the comments that the demos were hacked so the track got remixed to somehow counteract the "damage." The only real damage is that they changed this song at all. Kind of a tragedy.
this track in this form could be the ultimate dance anthem. instead it was used as another of Madonna's closing "serious" tracks. It's not bad in it's official form, I just feel like she missed a big opportunity for a classic hit.
I love the REBEL HEART album one of my favorites by her since American Life but....I do not understand how some of these demos did not make it onto the album but instead the track S.E.X made it on the album . I just do not understand!!!
This version is too dancey and the album version have some weird choices in term of the music. My favorite version is the simple piano acoustic version where Madonna's vocals and lyrics do the talking.
is it just me or do u think that BODY SHOP and INSIDE OUT would make great singles? better than iconic, and maybe they would do better on adult contemporary, and perhaps if billboard gets their act together, have them debut in the hot 100 , or is that interscopes fault? geesh, they seem to be picking singles that aren't as good as others, excluding ghost town, which to be honest with u, is a huge slap in the face for Madonna and her fans, who clearly believed this song would be a chart topper. I cant believe its not in the hot 100, or radio isn't embracing the song as much as they should...but I will say that atleast she will have her 45th number 1 dance single on billboard, so they are good for something.
The final production and mix of whole Rebel Heart album is a disaster. I will never understand why the demo of Avicii was aborted... I’ve heard that he was ill at this time and he could’t finalize his version.
The demos were so much better
+Michael Williams Everytime I think about it, I just want to kill who leaked the f*cking demos.
this demo is mediocre compared to the beautiful sad feeling on the album version
Nikki V not at all.
no
@@nickjohnson1426 the album version is mediocre compared on this demo
I love this demo...way more than the final cut :/
I so wish that one day we will receive an album of all the best unused demos, she has a treasure trove full of them!!
RIP Avicii
Jay C I’m here for this 😢
😭
Minha versão favorita.
In a world that's changing
I'm a stranger in a strange land
There's a contradiction
And I'm stuck here in between
Life is like a desert
An oasis to confuse me
So I walk this razor's edge
Will I stand or will I fall?
Turn a blind eye, try to pretend that
Nothing is what it seems
Torn between the impulse to stay or
Running away from all this madness
Who am I to decide what should be done?
If this is the end then let it come
Let it come, let it rain
Rain all over me
Like the tide, let it flow
Let it wash all over me, over me
Let it wash all over me, over me
Let it wash all over me
All of my illusions
Could be shattered in a second
You can thread a needle
With a teardrop from my eye
It's a cruel injustice
To be witness to the things I see
Looking for the answer
When it's right in front of me
From the tower of Babylon
Where nothing is what it seems
Gonna watch the sun going down
I'm not gonna run from all this sadness
Who am I to decide what should be done?
If this is the end then let it come
Let it come, let it rain
Rain all over me
Like the tide, let it flow
Let it wash all over me
Who am I to decide what should be done?
If this is the end then let it come
Let it come, let it rain
Rain all over me
Like the tide, let it flow
Let it wash all over me, over me
Let it wash all over me, over me
Let it wash all over me

"despite the Pet Shop Boys' never entirely.."...Never entirely what? You didn't finish your thought.
I agree with you xxxxooo
I never heard the song Heaven.
omg how can i bookmark this reply lmao
best youtube comment ever
I still love that demo
this should have been a very first single, then the album would have sold like hot cakes
I will never truly forgive Madonna for changing this and the other songs from Rebel Heart. The original versions were SOOOOO much better. Truly a waste. Nick Yes this is supposed to be a sad song, not a fucking Deeper and Deeper part 2
this is an unfinished messy dance song tho there’s no original version they’re unfinished songs they weren’t meant to be released after avicii she worked with many more producers
Amo! Alguém em 2019??
2024 Era hit seguro
THE BEST VERSION, Should have kept this one and used this instead . iHate the album version.
Should be the album version
2019 and still better
André Effgen better than Madame X but definitely doesn’t fit the lyrics
I think the version in album is more appropriate cause of the lyrics.
this is the original version, I think so, it sounds better than the version in the album, the version in the album sounds with a low voice and in some parts they added a robotic sound for the voice, it's like joan of arc, I prefer the demo
Melhor demo.
Não era demo nas sim a versão original mas como vasou todo o álbum 2 meses antes do lançamento ela resolveu mudar as músicas e fez uma grande cagada

As demos do "Rebel Heart" são melhores do que a original.
❤sim são
What madonna did to the songs till it final cut should be considered as a crime. Demo versions of all songs are so much better.
Fabriccio S they are better, but she was kind of forced to change it all after everything leaked.
Fabriccio S are you kidding? this is just as bad as her newest album
Avicii !
Album Version is way way better, it is emotional.
However this is good as a remix version
Album version is boooring
Better than original! How she can waste this hymn???
Avicii !! This version is the best !!!
Las dis versiones son buenas .Hubiera existido un álbum con todas esas versiones demos .
I was wondering why this version of the song is so much better than the "official version" on the Madonna YT channel, but I see in the comments that the demos were hacked so the track got remixed to somehow counteract the "damage." Should be the album version. much better
Yas gawd, this outro kicks ass
this track in this form could be the ultimate dance anthem. instead it was used as another of Madonna's closing "serious" tracks. It's not bad in it's official form, I just feel like she missed a big opportunity for a classic hit.
this demo is much better :c
This song gives me chills, avicii was a genius.
I would the video, I love this song
i like both versions
Miami Beach here I come lol
I love the REBEL HEART album one of my favorites by her since American Life but....I do not understand how some of these demos did not make it onto the album but instead the track S.E.X made it on the album . I just do not understand!!!

*САМАЯ ПИЗДАТАЯ ВЕРСИЯ ЭТОГО ТРЕКА*
is it just me or do u think that BODY SHOP and INSIDE OUT would make great singles? better than iconic, and maybe they would do better on adult contemporary, and perhaps if billboard gets their act together, have them debut in the hot 100 , or is that interscopes fault? geesh, they seem to be picking singles that aren't as good as others, excluding ghost town, which to be honest with u, is a huge slap in the face for Madonna and her fans, who clearly believed this song would be a chart topper. Demo is brilliant, official version sucks
MADONNA, EU NÃO ACEITO
at the beginning, what kind of instrument is it?
+Wesall Violin or other string?
Now I know, but thanks :D
This version is good, but I think the version in the album is better, I think it's way more emotional and original than the demo.
The final production and mix of whole Rebel Heart album is a disaster. I will never understand why the demo of Avicii was aborted... I’ve heard that he was ill at this time and he could’t finalize his version.
the demo for this and Illuminati are INFINITELY better. Such a shame this wasn't released. DAMN SHAME
I love the chorus but the vocals don't really match the style of this version
This version would’ve been amazing live. But meh, no win on whining
que pajaaa..!!!!
This is OK but the album version is way better in my opinion.
I dont Think these Beats fit the song, That's Way she changed, some parts sound like a Remix
thank god she went with the final version because this is awful. still better than the messy Madame X
