    This was a pretty good and informative vid. When I was doing my fellowship in S.Florida. I was newly married and never experienced a hurricane. Then a hurricane hit our area. I was pleasantly surprised in how the neighborhood came together to help one another. We were literally without electricity, phone service, water and other essential infrastructure for 15 days. Most of my neighbors and my wife and I had a decent supply of food water, propane, fuel etc. Since we had a week to prepare. People stocked up. Only regret was we didn't have a generator which would've made things more comfortable. Nonetheless, our immediate neighbors banded together to assist one another. Each person possessed some type of specialty which was applied when necessary. As a physician, I always had a bag of medical supplies and medicines you simply can't get over the counter. We had an engineer on the block who was quite helpful. Each night we could go to someone's house and light up their grill and basically have a block party. But, at the sametime, we would also ensure that our homes were subsequently secure. We looked out for one another's kids. There were people who would come from other sections of the city in an attempt to exploit people. They try to rob peoples residences while everyone were at the BBQ. We figured sticking together, made this inconvenience a bit more tolerable. And we let outsiders know that they couldn't come in our neighborhood and try to intimidate us. Sure law enforcement was still operational. However, they (police officers) had their hands full with other pressing matters.
    What I learned from this, is that people can be terrible to one another and paradoxically be extremely kind and compassionate to one another. The hurricane was truly bad, but the aftermath was a lot worse. You don't realize how nice it is to have hot water, electricity and other comforts we take for granted. Until you lose these services and infrastructure that makes our lives more convenient. After this storm and things settled down and clean up was well under way. I went to Home Depot to purchase a decent generator. And though it was expensive. It paid for itself 2.5 years later, when another (and worse) hurricane hit our area again. We lost all essential services for 20 days. And it nice being able to have hot water, lights on inside the house. The generator wasn't powerful enough to provide AC in the house. And if we had to use the washing machine then the refrigerator had to be turn off for a spell. And of course we let some neighbors who didn't have a generator use our showers to bathe and do their laundry. However, you felt you were on the cusp of civility and society could break down at any moment. We all got thru this hurricane too. And was nice a neighbor lent me his chain saw, so I could chop up some huge queen palm trees that came down in my yard. And then after this storm, I went and bought a decent chain saw. Never had to use it for a hurricane, since my fellowship came to an end.
    And I was offered a staff and teaching position at Vanderbilt University Hospital. Where I taught young doctors how to become gastro intestinal surgeons. Now I just live in an area where tornadoes occur. First time I heard the warning sirens for a tornado,,,,man I was never so scared. I feel somewhat secure that the basement in our house we had a section created for such a storm. Thankfully never had to experience a tornado yet. And confident if I did have to endure a storm of such magnitude. That my wife, kids and myself would be safe and we have good caring neighbors whom I believe would be there for one another. Sorry for this lengthy comment. But, the video does it home in manner of speaking. I think people in general of good moral character would be there to help the less fortunate. That being said, they were be the people out their lurking. To exploit others misfortunes and take advantage of them. We just have to be aware and have the ability to judge others with the ability to be fair too. You can trust, just verify and be apprehensive when meeting up with strangers. Bless You ALL.

    WORL: Learn to fish, hunt, go against the hoards of clueless people, and adapt when needed. Always be ready to move, always have an escape plan.
    Come to think of it, that advice goes for everyday life, regardless of what you are doing.

    • @walperstyle
      @walperstyle 10 лет назад

      ^Wrong. You always have an escape plan, even in business. The escape plan can be setting up someone else to cover the gap, or to change strategy in a forever changing world.

      Absolutely. You must always be prepared to drop EVERYTHING you own at a moments notice and bug the fuck out.... even that $2500 Super-rifle you lovingly crafted from boron plated parts, the storeroom full of food, the stack of gold bars... everything. Stay put and defend your home and neighborhood if you can, but.... all that stuff will just weigh you down and get you killed if what you really need to do is LEAVE.

    So much emphasis is put on winning, and being the tough guy, at least in my point of view. The true winner is the person who dies at a ripe old age of natural causes, regardless of how many times you backed down, or avoided a fight. To win in life, is to make wise decisions, that keep you alive.

    I like finally a prepper talking about rules of engagement. The whole mindset that "I'm going to need tons of guns and ammo to kill tons of sobs!" that is weakness. America used to be tough. We used to be strong. There were 2-hour lines to get gas on government coupons and spam in a can. People did not run around shooting each other, no one had money and just like Japan was strong through it's disasters. We were strong. Lets be strong, and armed.

    very mature approach, again a new point.. burial, no doing s causing disease. you are a voice of honesty. its nice to see realistic and grounded point of view but it almost makes it feel like the WROL situation is real and threatening. the real level of maturity about the topic makes it feel real where the "zombies" feels like preparation in denial..... I feel like this video removed some blinders..

    • @marksampson174
      @marksampson174 9 лет назад +2

      Dustin Westerman I agree this is a more grounded look at being prepared, and therefore vastly more important. However If "zombies" or "aliens" makes people think about being more prepared i don't think it should be shunned either.
      To me its like the obnoxious guy at the gun counter who insists his sks is the end all be all of defensive rifles. Sure its annoying and incorrect but at least he's on the right side of the fence.

    Another great video. I think you make an important point regarding the possibility of violence in the WROL situation. Many people seem to fantasise that violent confrontation will be inevitable in the event of a natural disaster. Historically apocalyptic disasters have seen humans helping one another and showing great community spirit. People often dedicate an entire room for "emergency firearms and knives" but have no first aid training and little more than a box of plasters at home. Looking at historical disasters suggests we should probably concentrate more on hording first aid gear, water and food. Im not saying dont have guns. Have one or two but making it the focus of preparations is short sighted and shows a worrying personality trait - that some preppers are looking forward to the violence.

  • @indigoking
    @indigoking 9 лет назад

    I live by (and teach my kids) "the best form of defense is to not be there" OR if you are there "remove yourself" - get caught up in a demo, protest or even riot - don't do anything physical but join in, chant the same thing - move gradually thru the crowd till your on the edge then get the hell away!
    Natural Law will always be present (as in do not cause nor cause to be caused Loss, Harm or Damage). Killing should be an absolute last resort, when your or yours are in mortal danger with no escape… Because YOU kill someone, then expect that "someone's" relative or friend WILL be looking to take revenge.
    Thanks for doing these vids Nutnfancy - i've learned a lot and it's made me think even more.
    IF(WHEN) it goes belly up - folks will go crazy pretty quick (look at Katrina - we experienced that) 2-3 days without water folks will start dying in hot places - 2 weeks without food most will be barely able to walk. Store shelves will be empty within an hour or so - I learned that from similar weather events.

    Again I respect you Nut'n for approaching the subject with a bit of trepidation. It shows that you are a person of substance. The taking of life and the manner in which it is approached conversationally speaking deserves the same amount of respect that one would lend to the handling of a weapon ....maybe even more. You have a following and the way you handle the discussion in some cases shapes the thought processes of the masses. You're a good dude.

    I've spent the last two days watching SEVERAL of your videos, NUTN. I've just recently embraced the ideas, tools, and issues surrounding personal defense using deadly force. I have to say that your logic and values seem to align very closely with my own. I particularly like the way you discuss these very volatile and sensitive subjects, such as your thought process on "unlock codes" for coming to the point of pulling the trigger on a fellow human being. I appreciate your candor and wisdom.

      Jose Vazquez Exactly. We as a society have drifted further apart from each other because we keep giving away our power to centralized authority instead of keeping it local.
      Get out and get to know your neighbors. Go knock on their door just to say hello.

    I think one thing you may not have noticed Nutn iro setting up a "neighbourhood council", as soon as you do that you are starting to create a ROL situation because in years gone by that is exactly how society as we know it was made. Setting this up, whatever you want to call it should be top of the list and it's something I had not thought about a lot. So as ever Nutn, thanks for enlightening me.

Tornado, Hurricane, Earthquake, attack of some other kind, you have a duty to be prepared and be part of the solution not the problem. None of us is as prepared as we might think we are, so I'm going to review all of my preps. Food, Water, energy, protection, everything. Find a way to help and be a good resource to your area.

    To quote you: "I won't shoot until I take rounds first". Erring on the side of caution is all good and fine, but waiting until someone shoots at you FIRST is ridiculous!! Dude, c'mon!! Are you afraid of litigation or something here? That type of "advice" will, literally, get a person killed...I've been watching you for years, and I have extremely high esteem and respect for you, but in a WROL situation, where my home's being intruded/invaded upon by undesirables, I AM NOT WAITING TO TAKE ROUNDS FIRST prior to unleashing my weaponry. Gotta disagree with that brother...

    Thankyou nutnfancy, your video speaks nothing but truth. I think there are a lot of people who prepare for a fantasy WROL situation, and, by doing so, de-humanize their fellow man. You have to have a concrete set of moral guidelines in both a with or without ROL situations that dictates, not only your actions, but your thoughts and intentions too... and it's nice to see that someone else understands this. Rock-on Nutn!

  • @williambray1611
    @williambray1611 10 лет назад +6

    Great video. You're absolutely correct on ALL points.
    There's two types of zombies. There's the "Night of the living Dead" kind and there's the "28 Days Later" zombies. I never say anything is impossible but Night of the Living Dead zombies are extremely unlikely. 28 Days Later zombies are more likely because in this case LIVING people were turned into blood thirsty savages by a virus or chemical agent. NOTHING is going to reanimate an already rotting corpse.
    The most likely SHTF/WROL scenario is from a violent act of nature such as an extremely powerful and massive storm.

    I won't have any ROE, it's me or the other person. ROE goes out the window in a situation like that. Also there's no such thing as "god given rights" The rights we have we only have becuase brave men fought for them. And where smart enough to write them into the constitution, otherwise places like Africa and Europe would have the same rights we do.
    Basic human rights, has nothing to do with a deity.

    Excellent video. You were right on in your approach and discussion of the topics. My town was hit hard by a winter ice storm, we were without power for 9 days. On day 2 our neighborhood came together and we helped each other through. I was the best prepared and shared very discreetly with others. I learned a lot from this very short term situation. @Nutnfancy I think the whole "zombie apocalypse" thing does serve a useful purpose in WROL talk; as a metaphor for "worst possible scenario" -society is gone, not ever coming back, AND the environment is hostile. If you're ready for that, you're ready for anything.
    It's also useful as a kind of coping mechanism. You're right; these ARE serious, scary things to talk about, and couching it in the metaphor of a zombie movie makes it easier for some people to talk and think about.

    The seriousness at which you address the subject of taking human life in potentially lethal situations is appreciated. There seems to be too many ichy trigger fingers when it comes to discussions of WROL.
    I would like to make a small note. There is a reason our less civilized less governed ancesters were nomadic migrantes. It would see to me the idea of gardening and food storage cannot yield enough in a long term scenerio.
    Gardens can fail, storages run out; thus a return to primative roots

    Another thing to consider is stocking up on less lethal ammo, and other options, for WROL. LTL ammo isn't super useful in ROL because anyone that you're justified in shooting needs to be stopped instantly, but in WROL the lines are blurred--good people will do questionable things when they're starving, and may not need to be killed. A good collapsible baton (even though you can't legally carry them in many localities) would probably be quite useful in a WROL situation.

    I completely agree with your philosophy. I fear that morality will go out the window when people begin suffering or clinging to their lives. I truly hope that WROL never happens and if it does that Ill never have to take a life. But I understand that it is always possible, but I will do my best to deescalate the situation. I want to make sure good people do not get shot, not shoot people.

    Nutnfancy, This is one of the most sensible video's I have seen on WROL/SHTF that I have seen. It just makes sense to use the same value system that God blesses and the same value system you have WITH ROL! Too many have the Rambo mentality and too many think they can do it all by themselves. I did not enjoy this video but then I don't look forward to WROL! I do believe that it is certainly coming!

    three years ago, we had a huge snowstorm in october. we were without power for 14 days. it was no problem for my family because we have a wood stove, generators, and plenty of things we can do in the outdoors. :) water was only a slight issue because we have an older style well that comes to the surface and we used a pulley, bucket, and rope.

    A very sobering look at the reality of a very undesirable situation. It is important to think about the realities of this type of situation prior to encountering one. Best to be prepared and never have be exposed to this, then to encounter a situation, without preparation.

    when i was in the police academy - in 1996- they showed us video taken by a police dash cam of a man high on LSD - he had a weapon in hand and charged the officers- they fired multiple shots at the man before he dropped - at least 7 were hits to the kill zone ( or t-zone) and he was still moving forward before dropping..... he was growling like an animal and clearly out of his mind ---- i will NEVER forget that footage

    Nutinfancy, some good words to think about. I can say that I situations like this has run through my head ever since I moved down from San Francisco Bay Area to the Los Angeles area. Two different histories in regards to handling stressful situations. Needless to say I have increased my emergency preparations to include the strong chance of riots and looters which is something that I have not had to do in the past with LA's strong history unruliness. Stay safe.

    In WW1, on Christmas day, 1914, the troops, in small pockets, met in no-mans land. They did not dehumanize each other, they indeed had respect for each other. As the war continued, they never did revisit this level of friendliness. On both sides, the horror of the war became burned into everyone's memories. As my GF said, he wondered how he survived and why so many of his friends were lost. Peace

    To anyone who thinks WROL is crazy, or it's stupid to be prepared, then take a look at Colorado Springs. Right now we're going through this wildfire, and it is a situation that could possibly turn into WROL. This is the perfect example as to why people should always be prepared.

    I think there is always more than one way to come through in the end. Sometimes the right thing to do is nothing . . . sometimes it's to be direct and brutal. Sometimes it's to be compassionate and giving. Each situation in a WROL world will be unique and will demand unique reactions. The trick I think is to not expect everything to be easy. Because it wont. We have a country with tons of people that simply do NOT have any backup plan. So what will these people do? Perhaps they will become viscous bandits? Like I said, sometimes being direct and brutal will be the only course of action. Then again, maybe being kind will prove to be the way to keep yourself safe in the end. No way of knowing. Every situation will be unique.

    I that my favorite bit of this video was your refusal to tell other people what they should do. Live by your moral code, in all circumstances. I loved it. Also, though I figured I'd get help from people in my area the idea of a neighborhood council is something I hadn't thought of.

Just like the remarks & comments that you post about this video, I find your opinions to be mature & well thought of. I'm glad to see you addressing this Nutnfancy. It's a topic that is rarely talked about on the survival forums, except for the inevitable chest thumping. The ability to hang onto one's humanity, when everyone around you is losing theirs...is important. The ability to look back over your life, when it's over...and know that you did your best to minimize any unnecessary taking of a human life, is invaluable. It goes hand in hand with doing one's duty to protect your loved ones with deadly force.

    Thanks for brining up the ICVS report. I hadn't seen it before, and it is an interesting read. Don't put too much on the '95 report. In a more recent report it says "The average for the 15 countries shows that the level of victimisation has peaked halfway the 1990s and has since shown a slow but steady decline.
    The near universal drop in volume crime is arguably the most striking result of the fifth round of the ICVS and poses a clear theoretical challenge to criminologists."

    Another thing that concerns me with use of force in a WROL situation, is not knowing how a resurgent government would deal with things that happened during the collapse. Society will eventually reappear, and people will probably be held accountable for their actions to the greatest of the state's abilities, so I would recommend staying within the law as much as possible. Additionally, I do not consider taking water, medical supplies, flashlights, batteries, etc. from a store during a natural

    I feel that if we faced a WROL situation, that overall we will do ok, the struggle will be in restoring things to working order. If no contamination, food can be grown, green power can provide light, geo thermal heat and cooling, medical resources will be a problem as well as connecting with others on a large enough scale to generate common cause; to that end, green power can power radio :).

    Even when services are up and running, when you are faced with someone with evil intent, you are in a temporary WROL (at least until the authorities can get there, which is usually too late). In a WROL situation, it is just less temporary. The rules of engagement don't change.

    As you said, INTEL=OPTIONS. Having LP/OPs manned, possibly security patrols (depending on the size of your "community", gives you early warning (ala the DEW line) of approaching trouble. Likewise, monitoring and analyzing the information available from other areas can also help you choose how to react. Posting your area, fencing, obstacles will pput intruders (or are they really just refugees) on notice not to barge in. Have an entry control point to direct them to.

    I agree that with or without rule of law, the rules of engagement would be based on a threat to your life, or that of wife, children or other innocent. Situations may differ but the reasons I see to take a life generally fall squarely in that realm.
