I have a bin of socks just like that! I have a lot of hand dyed variegated and solids, so I am making toe up with afterthought heels, and contrast toes/heel/cuff. So I have a bin of just toes! Each baggie or whatever has a toe, size 0 40” circ, and leg yarn. Makes them a “grab and go” project.
I haven't tried self-striping yarn for socks, but now I want to even more. I knit my socks two-at-a-time but on separate needles. I never wanted to get into doing two on one needle, it just seems too fiddly and too much to keep track of, for me. But two at once, each on it's own needle, I LOVE, because then they're both finished at the same time. I do them in chunks (sections) - One rib, second rib, then one leg, second leg, one heel, second heel, and so forth. That way if I try something and it doesn't work I only have to undo it on the one sock I've tried it on, but catch the second one up before the next section.
Love the name and that color is amazing! I'm always drawn to those deep colors with gem tones in it. You could even call it "dark and brooding" since many of us are drawn to those colors like those leading men we often think are dreamy. 😂
You know how watching an episode of hoarders makes you look at your own house like it is a sparkling, spotless gem of organization?… Well watching you go through your unfinished socks was very therapeutic for me, and greatly alleviated my guilt of having 2 unfinished second socks!! 😂 😜
Let me tell you about my sock-knitting. I knit my socks one at a time (with 5 DPNs). Not more than one pair as a WIP. I can have other WIPs on the needles too, but not other socks. I found my favourite sock recipe at the youtube channel of Roxanne Richardson. It has been a KAL, but I discovered it later. There's measuring, counting stitches (swaps!) and math involved. But that's what I need because of the shape of my feet. I was so happy to find out how I could knit socks that really fit my feet! Before my socks were always sloppy, because I measured the widest part for the size and then followed a sock pattern.
After 2 years of knitting socks I figure out my favorite way. I do toe up with a Turkish CO, then invisible increase left and right. I add 4 increase to the heel and do a short row heel, and I like my ribbing to be 1x1 with smaller needles. Took plenty of socks to find a good fit.
I have only done 3 socks and I only use TAAT to knit. I cannot have second sock syndrome or forget what my needle size was on the first. All these WIPs are stressing me out! I can’t do it, I’ll lose my mojo. Like right now I have on deck Lovenote, but I can’t even cake up my yarn because I’m working on my own pair of socks and I HAVE TO finish. Messed up and made too big so the first pair went to my hubby. My daughter requested hers next. It’s summer so I don’t care. But my thing is doing each vanilla pattern 3 times to try out each style (doing toe up now and I love it!), each heel, etc. Then I’ll start some fancy styles, but really I love variegated and speckled so I don’t need anything extra. I subscribed to Freckled Whimsy because her self striping is my jam. Even going toe up, I’m not using all of my skeins yet. I love your yarn, how about “my little pretty” as the name? Did you dye it again?
Right?! I'm thinking like a simple clothesline situation that hangs in the craft space. It would be sort of adorable. 😊 Like once you finish one sock, up it goes! 🧦📌📿
I could listen to you speak all day!!! I also have a couple of unfinished socks but always knit in tandem, so they are never lonely half finished. I have not tried your sock base, yet……. I will have to peak. Sparkles sound intriguing. Happy knitting 🧶
I like to split my cake/skein and cast both socks on separate needles then alternate between them; currently I have four pairs of socks WIPs. As I get a couples pairs completed, I'll cast on another couple pairs.
I think this is a really great idea. I actually used to do this and I think that this is the reason I had a period of time where I completed several pair. Who'd of thunk it. 🥴 Thank you for watching Lisa!
Soooooo funny. I’ve been having some odd side effects from my radiation including the swelling of my right eye and deafness in my right ear and when you lost your lighting I thought “oh boy I hope it’s Tayler’s lighting and I’m not going blind”! Got to laugh! 😂😂😂 You got me motivated to grab the sock WIP I brought. I’d never done socks until I accidentally signed up to test knit a pair for Christie Archer Designs, hers are heelless and have such a lovely fit. I do eventually want to try a heel though. Great podcast! ❤️
I have two socks on the needles and thought that was crazy and you have so many. super pretty though I hope you accomplish your goal of finishing a few up quickly.
I love the idea of a HO garland! I feel like I forget about all the socks I have on the needles 😅 Also it was so fun to hear you mention Logan, UT! I really enjoy that area but don’t hear about it often. Such a quaint little city with some beautiful mountains and rural farms nearby!
I think a cute little clothesline of the ‘socks in waiting’ would be so endearing in any knitter’s craft space. It’s a friendly reminder to finish each pair. I’m seriously considering it. ☺️ And I love the Logan area. My aunt and uncle used to have a home in Smithfield, which is just north (I believe) and the landscape is stunning. So much beauty in that area of Utah (I mean, Utah in general really…). Thank you so much for watching Emily! ❤️
Oh wow! Ok, so now that you mention 'Molly Weasley' I'm having more bells going off than I did with Honey Bear...🤔. LOL. Either way, I just love the color combo. ❤️
So glad you’re back! I have a self striping sock obsession, definitely with Nomadic Yarns. So much so that your socks are Honey Bear colorway. She has the best colors but adore her yellows and golds! Thanks for sharing your socks.
Thank you Brittany! And you're good! I know that this colorway goes back a bit, but look at you. 😎 It's easy to become obsessed with such cool yarn and Ashley's yarn is just so cool. And I'm like you--I love some good yellows and golds. 💛
Ya know, I alternate balls of yarn when I have different dye lots, but I feel like where I carry the different yarns up tends to either not be stretchy enough or looks funny or feels funny when the item is worn. Could you show us how you carried your yarn for your sock that needs the Kitchener stitch?
My pleasure Silje! We all need it from time to time. My socks just can't seem to get up the energy to hop out of the project bag long enough for me to finish them. It's clearly nothing I'm doing. 😂. Fortunately, socks are one of those things that once you pick them back up, you get caught in the rhythm.
Thank you Tayler! Love the alternative heel! I’m intimidated with the heel flap gusset style SO I’m excited to possibly having another option! It looks prettier and cleaner! Love the stripy socks! Hope you enjoy finishing them! 💜
I’m so glad that you’re finding this heel technique to be more approachable. I know what you mean about the heel flap/gusset construction and execution. It’s not difficult in terms of each little step that you have to take, it’s just sort of a nuisance in terms of how it throws off that lovely momentum. Any short row heel technique will help alleviate that quite a bit. And I agree-a short row heel just looks tidy and neat. Happy sock knitting Steph and thank you for watching! ❤️
I loved seeing all your socks! I've been working on commissioned socks and the last pair is currently on my needles. This round up definitely got me more excited to finish them up!
So I tried knitting socks two at a time and it wasn't great, however that was early on in my sock knitting journey so I think it may be time to revisit that because it's the fact that there are two that gets me. It's a dumb mental hurdle for me. 🥴 But a cute clothesline of HOs is really an adorable idea. Thank you for watching Heather! ❤️
Yayyy for sox!! Have a few of my own to finish… used different toes, so lotsa frogging/knitting for that perfect fit! I’m making myself knit only so many projects…must. use. up. the. stash… annnd a few socks, of course. Currently: 2wraps, 1cardi, 2 pullovers, Linen st dishtowels (for whenever). I really need to f.i.n.i.s.h. all the above. Then, lotsa cowl kits to (ahem) finish. I have plenty of different things to make, to suit the many “moods” of Project Knitting. lol Happy Sock Making--Love your hand-dyed sock colors btw!
This made me chuckle. I know the feeling. I don't know how familiar your are with The Little Mermaid (the Disney movie), but I like to think that my WIPs are like my version of Ariel's cave of wonders. It's not too much...it's not overwhelming...it's my collection! LOL.
I was always one to have only one pair of socks on the needles. Now I think I have 3 HOs. I'm also knitting a colour-work sock by Charlotte Stone. I've knit a lot of colour-work over the years, but for some reason my colour-work on socks isn't looking all that pretty 🤔. Oh well, hopefully blocking will help!
Yeah, I'm with you Sandra. I like to think that I'm the host of some sort of lonely hearts club for socks....how depressing....for the socks. I need to get on it. 😂. And I think I can imagine my own colorwork knitting not being to my liking with socks. I wonder if the smaller scale and tube structure would cause more puckering for me... Best of luck with your own lonely hearts club for socks. Hopefully they find their mates soon. 😉
So good to see you again. I really enjoy your podcast. A question about your sock technique - I noticed that your method of choice is a cuff down . What type of cast on do you use to get a nice stretchy but elastic cuff? Mine are never elastic enough, in my opinion.
Thank you so much for watching Joanna! So yes. I prefer cuff-down socks. And I always use the long-tail cast on. Nothing special. I've tried stretchy cast-ons (just to try) and they are always sort of sloppy-looking, in my opinion. Here's my recommendation: cast on using the long tail method on a needle two sizes larger and cast on loose-ish--not too loose--just loose-ISH. Sometimes that makes all the difference and a more stretchy cast on isn't necessary. And always remember that when you cast those first stitches onto the needle, make sure not to snug them up too much. The stitch should only be tightened up to the point that the yarn just grazes the bottom of the needle. Anything tighter is too tight. I know that that comes across like a tip for a newbie, but I have to always remind myself of that. Another option would be to use the German twisted cast-on (the least "sloppy" of the stretchy cast-ons in my opinion). If it ends up seeming sort of loosey-goosey, you can knit a double long cuff and then fold it over. Great question. I hope this helps a bit! ❤️
I love that you’re back to podcasting and I love seeing your socks! I wish you wouldn’t edit the video this much/apply this filter as the colours of the yarn are different from what you describe.
Thank you Laura. It’s good to be back! As for the color of the video, it’s not exactly a filter. It’s the way I grade the color so I can show the most accurate brightness and hue. What I see here is pretty accurate to life, however I know that that can be different on different monitors. Honestly, I’m getting used to working in a part natural/part artificial lighting situation and keeping things looking nice and balanced. 🥴 I think what you may be noticing is the warmth being a little intense. I’ll reduce that a bit in the next upload. ❤️
when you say you are linking something down below - I take that to mean the "show more/less" just under your name -- but I don't ever see any show notes there! what am I doing wrong?
Ah yes. There's so much "down there" that it's hard to see where to click. I'll include a photo in the community tab here on the channel, but in the meantime scroll down and right below the video title you'll see the words 'show more'. You have to search for them. They get lost in the mix. Click on that and the description of the video will expand and you'll see all the details there. 👍 Thank you for watching Ursula!
Omg, the striped socks!! First time to do self striping so was curious… your stripes are perfection, how do you knit them so that the change in color doesn’t happen mid row? I’ve seen some socks that show this and want to have mine look even. Any help is much appreciated!!
Hi Renee! Thank you so much for watching. So for my self-striping socks, I really cannot take any credit for the even stripes. That's a credit to the dyer and their measurements and calculations when determining how much of a particular color to dye on each skein and in what interval...it's really amazing. And from what I've seen from others, as well as these here, Nomadic Yarns just has it down. Highly recommend. ❤️
@@WOOLNEEDLESHANDS oh that’s great to know!!! I have a few different makers of self striping. One of them being nomadic so super excited now to just start. Sounds simple…I think I’m just overthinking it.
Beautiful socks. I highly recommend this page.

So many cute socks! This sounds to me like a perfect opportunity to join the Socky Seconds KAL that started today on Instagram.
