- When it comes to making ends meet these days, everything is on the chopping block from cable to the weekly grocery bill. Food at home is now 6.5% more expensive.
Based on real life examples, a lot of food prices have been going up 50-200%, not 7%.
Yeah, 7% is not accurate. My grocery bill is double.
My favorite treat was lemons I was able to get a 5 pound bag for $3.50 but now I can't find it and the 2 pound bags are $4 like wtf.
The lack of diversity in farms and the fact farms don't sell the 12% food they can't sell to stores to livestock farms baffles me.

15$ for 3 Clorox and they are not even a gallon size. Not that we eat bleach but it's a sterility product I use regularly.
Buy raw chicken and cook it. We have to change what we buy to save money. I just bough chicken thighs for $1.99. I bought bacon ends and pieces for $3 a pound instead of 12 oz slices for $12
Went to our nearby Costco and could not believe the price increase.
Just bought 2 items and left.
We are only 2 people so it is not feasible to buy bulk items.
But you still see a lot of people with loaded carts with lots of junk food.
None of those tips are new. “Choose the cheaper option” oh please. Some of us are always buying store brand. There is no cheaper option. Beef prices are ridiculous. I seldom buy it now. But I have gone through my pantry and freezer and have gotten about 2 weeks worth of dinners from doing that. I also find that meal planning is helpful in controlling my grocery bill. Times are hard. But it will get better eventually.

I used to go to name brand stores never had to look at prices now I have to look at prices at Aldi.
I don't know if you have ever considered buying markdown meat or other markdown items at your grocery store I have been doing this for many years and I pay a fraction of the cost
@@debbieframpton3857 I've been watching my local butcher shop for their markdown section. They often have meat scraps there that are too small for steaks or anything else so they sell them very cheap to get rid of them. They're great for stews and soups.

If we can’t afford even the basic groceries how in hell do you expect us to make things from scratch which is EVEN MORE EXPENSIVE. that’s exactly why people buy rice cereal eggs ramen mac and cheese ect. Because normal food is too damn expensive it costs even more to make things from scratch rather than buying the processed chemical based foods made in a factory.

My power bill went up 80.00 per month. The cold is part of it but the power company raised their rates considerably and it's not going down to the prices we had last year. There are ways to mitigate some of the cost of things and then other things just "are".
We eat almost all left overs, We have tacos and enchiladas or pizza once a week. I also make soup. It uses meat portions that aren't enough for a meal, on their own, and then vegetables are added so it ups the health factor. I have joined the "clubs" at all the grocery stores we go to and every week there is some really great special, only for club members. We got .88 per pound pork chops last week. We got two packs and froze them. They are good for fried chops, grilled, can braise and make pulled pork, Carnitas and so on. I get coupons from the stores for free stuff, like free bell peppers, free bread, free butter. It helps. We also get like .20 per gallon off gas with the points from the store purchases and also Costco is way less expensive that other stations most of the time. We also have a garden every year. I freeze a lot of things like green beans, tomatoes, and dry my herbs. I froze cabbage and spinach and use in soups. It's hard and of course, if you don't have a car and/or live in the inner city, you have a whole host of issue that thankfully I don't have.
My dog has a better life!

@@pamelawing5747 Lot of folk would love to swap places with your pets. Sound like you're a good manager. Prices have skyrocketed in Europe recently too. In Ireland it's approx $8.30 gallon petrol. Makes everything more expensive. Though we haven't had the huge increases, nor shortages that USA has had. But its looking like its going to get worse. Our carbon taxes are due to increase in May. Answer, rice and beans! Add a small diced tomato, garlic, and Tabasco sauce. Frozen OJ, store brand, water it by a quarter. Meat once a week, and dice it in rice, noodles, pasta, barley, etc. Milk every other day. No fast food, no cookies, candies, chips, etc. In the mood for sweets? Try raisins. Or rice with raisins, a little milk, butter, cinnamon. Eat slowly. You’ll feel full on less food. Check out foods growing wild, dandelion, chives, tiger lilly blossoms, blackberries, blueberries, elderberries, crab apples, grape leaves, watercress. Can you fish? Hunt? Clam? Crawdads? Frog’s legs? Fiddleheads? Depending upon your location, there are free foods out there.

I live in Finland and pay 800e rent on a huge apartment with two bedrooms, a garden and Sauna. I pay no energy rates whatsoever- it's all included in my rent. That's electricity, water and Internet as well as any additional services necessary like repairs by the housing agency. All we need is simply focus on our other needs like food. The US has it all wrong

The only way to beat this was to know it was coming a year or two ago and to prepare for it. I have 6+ months of frozen and food staples I regularly eat in my basement. I am currently eating at 2020/2021 sale prices. That is the trick, stock up when on sale, consume when not on sale, restock and rotate when sales are back again. I have 40 roasts in my freezer, over a dozen packages of bacon. I have a roast on my counter defrosting, $3/LB. I have a 2 year supply of coffee, all purchased at $6.88 each, no $10-$14 tubs for me. With the money I have saved, I don't feel so bad paying the current fresh produce prices, I still buy in season of course.

@@michaelmullin3585 there are excellent prepping channels on RUclips. Try Alaska Prepper, Pinball Preparedness, Popular Prepardness, Ice Age Farmer, Sunshine State Survival. There are many more. Start watching some of these, or all of them. Eye opening.

You need a lot of storage. If you live in a mini studio apartment, buying in bulk doesn’t work.
I’ve been experimenting with new recipes using dried goods like beans, rice, lentils, and split peas. They are healthy and cheap. I made a lentil “meatloaf” the other day and it turned out pretty good. I also bought 10 lbs of ground beef yesterday to separate and freeze. It was on sale cheap but you had to buy 10 lbs. I completely quit buying drinks like soda and juice. I always go with best foods Mayo but I got the store brand to try because it was just a bit over half the price. I wanted to get a head of lettuce but decided to go without because it was $3! I had a long shopping list yesterday but I ended up going without some of the stuff that wasn’t on sale and stocking up on my list items that were on sale cheap. These high prices haven’t hit me too hard because I have a lot of experience being poor so I’ve gotten good at it.
That's how it's supposed to be. People don't know how to cook dried beans and lentils. There are so many foods out there that are cheap, health and easy to prepare. We do not ways have to eat steaks and drink sodas.

I’m curious how you did the lentil meatloaf. Did you do it just like a regular meatloaf.
@@TruthSeeker09825 it had cooked lentils, oats, sauteed onions, tomato sauce, egg, and some salt, pepper, garlic powder, and basil mixed in. I got ideas from different recipes and kinda made it my own. I mashed it all up and cooked it in a loaf pan and added added a mixture of ketchup and bbq sauce on top. It tasted good but never firmed up like a regular meatloaf. I read that if you bake the lentils on a baking sheet for a while before adding to the mix it makes the loaf more firm and chewy so I want to try that next time. There are a lot of recipes online and on RUclips you can look up but I’d definitely try baking the lentils for a bit to dry them out some after you initially cook them. After you bake them you can partially mash them and add to your mix.
Even the little things went up in price like lettuce.

It's been a while since I traveled to the US, and I was always under the impression that your food prices were always considerably cheaper than ours here in Ontario. But I see that a lot of foods are almost on par with ours price-wise....and food up here is not cheap. Life is getting more expensive to live as the days go by.
Jokes on them. My grocery stores are out of stock of certain items I need so I don’t even bother buy anything. I go to 3 different stores and all sold out same items. Guess I will eat PBJ sandwiches.
I have been giving my son various milks such as oat, almond, boxed, and lactaid.
I ended up buying one sweetened vanilla and mixing boxed milk I got when it was still a dollar.
I have not shopped since November and prices are a huge sticker shock. Milk went from 3.99 to 6.49 in a few days.
Powdered milk is a good way to go; more for less. Buy 2: One for now, one for prepper reasons.

that reporter is so FUCKING clueless, i live in ky and meat prices, everything has went up, salad kits (bagged salad), about $5, $6 for a bag of idaho russet potatoes, about $40 for only like 3 pieces of steak in that styrofoam packaging, lord... and yet we're being dwindled to being forced to buy canned food that mostly have alot of perservatives & chemical which arent good for you and thats why some people end up with liver, heart, gallstone problems. even milk is almost $4 (a gallon of it).

Going hungry is one way to deal with things, but then I get depressed and unproductive. I also try to use the AC/heat as little as possible, and used a mini heater this winter. Energy prices are ok, but my plan is divided by what I spent over the last 12 months, and I used a HECK of a lot of AC last summer (it was 90-100 for 8 months). Think I will use my small AC unit instead of central air, and use kerosene and tea lights as much as I can at night. But, it doesn't matter how much you cut down. There eventually reaches a point when things are unliveable. The inflation was bad but I think the war is what's going to break my pocketbook

So thankful to be a vegetarian with a garden. It helps. Also glad to have an aldi nearby. Prices went up there too but still, better quality food at, better prices than anywhere else. Walmart food prices are insane.
We had to pay part of my mortgage due to the fact that the gas is high so we still owe $200 on our mortgage and we had to like prolong it for the next week to we have more money to pay it food and Gas and Electric is going up high nobody's talking about the electric and no help yet from the government he can send our taxpayer dollars overseas hope other countries and forget about the Americans I won't vote for him again

Grow your own groceries when you can.
Buy things in bulk and stock up. ( especially on dried foods like grains and pasta and noodles too.)
Learn to preserve food/ and freeze it too, like bread.)
Be resouseful and Use what you have wisely ( just because you have a lot don't mean use a lot.)
Learn to save more spend less.
Budget everything you buy.
Buy clothes on sales, clearance and online thrift store.
Shop the Holidays and Seasonal sales, you'll find good deals.

Global inflation is worldwide. We should see our wants and needs. I have made several changes. Mostly tin products especially when it comes to fresh produce. Generic brands are good also. Just shop for d items u really need.

People wanted higher minimum wage
How much do "you" earn? What is "your" monthly budget...the basics (rent/mtg, food, union dues (if you have them), transport (parking, gas, tolls, or cost of public transit), cleaning your clothes/laundry... If you have children - don't forget to factor them in: cost of school clothes (cause you know they are ever growing), computer supplies and internet, medical bills and medicines. Just to name a few things. Add that all up per month and 'THEN' see if MINIMUM WAGE 'BEFORE' the slight increase would cover YOUR cost of living - even AFTER the increase.
Excuse those forced to work for 'minimum wage' even if they have tons of experience and/or education to garner higher wages prior to the pandemic. YOU may have been fortunate enough to not have your earnings affected but most of the country are not as fortunate as you. Count YOUR BLESSINGS and the next time you feel like posting something as insensitive as you have - Pause, and then, DON'T.
Rather than putting fault where it really belongs ... With government officials so out of touch with reality - real life - you blame HARD WORKING everyday individuals that are TRYING to get a FULL-TIME schedule when employers suffering financially can only offer PART-TIME because they can employ TWO people this way and put funds into two wallets instead of one; or, someone working an exhausting 50+ hours because there are those who individuals that refuse to work for minimum wage which leaves a shortage in staff to cover all the responsibilities - actually STRUGGLING to live day-to-day because wealthy business owners think it's fine for it's employees to live 'paycheck-to-paycheck' -- often times not giving cost-of-living increases. Taxes still increase as do other things in life.
The $1 has diminished greatly to the point where we bring home 1/2 to 1/3 the amount of food home from the supermarket these days.
Tell someone who is a caregiver to an elderly parent whose medicine costs almost $1000 per prescription that a DECENT 'minimum wage' is ASKING TOO MUCH. And, that 'THEY' are the reason 'you' are paying more for food. Ummm hmmm.

They need to start monitoring the amount of shoppers allowed into the stores at one time, Ten people maximum. Believe me, people start turning vicious and desperate. Also there needs to be a Limit on certain key items that people usually clear out the entire Shelves.

I’m literally eating canned soup and crackers nearly every night for dinner 🤷♂️. I skip breakfast altogether and just snack at lunch time when at work. I feel bad for people trying to feed their children, let alone all of the other expenses in life.
