David, as usual, is bang on. The groom is totally superfluous to weddings. It wouldn't matter in the slightest if he weren't there. Weddings are now a tribute and testament to the 'originality' of the bride. Which is exactly why stag nights have taken on the meaning they have. Because not only is it the last night of freedom but the groom knows what's coming the next day and he'd really rather not remember it.

I largely agree with this--not that the couple should have no control over their own wedding, but that some people go ridiculously out of control in their attempt to make their wedding memorable. I mean, it's their money and they can spend it how they like, but can you imagine if they took that huge wad of cash they spent having Swarovski crystals on the invites and instead put it toward a house? A car? Their future kids' college funds? I'd rather do that, anyway. But maybe that's just me.

A registry office isn't all that romantic, but I don't agree with the hundreds of thousands of pounds spent on the wedding day when really what you need is to spend it on the marriage. Have your ceremony by all means, do what you like, have the party (because I think that is the only fun bit of the day for everyone) and then use the money you saved from hideous bridesmaids dresses and stretch hummers (boke) on useful things like kettles, toasters and sofas because you will need those things.

@doctortehe Around 3:08 He seems to be paraphrasing it. "But I will think it quite loudly". It's quite similar to Professor Farnsworth line "I'm not saying that, but I'm certainly thinking it loudly." It could be unintentional of course. But it's nice to think of Mitchell as a Futurama fan.

Actually, I'm 30 and still single, and I'd quite happily have someone just tell me who to marry because clearly I suck at dating. Seriously considering just asking my Indian friends to get on the case.

I am scared that every woman I date will want to get married and have a lavish ceremony. I thought I was the only one who thought it was pointless

I think the problem lies more in weddings than marriage itself. I have heard it said that the wedding day is the most important and memorable day in the life of a woman. Not all women may see it this way. But some definitely might. The time, effort, energy and money that goes into that one day. Everything chosen with special attention to detail. All for the day a man and a woman decide to "become one" and in her mind, it is all downhill from there. Fantasies, what can you do, eh? Say no to her?

I used to be together with someone that was focussed on that 'downhill' thing.
Spend ages with actual secret schedules (not kidding!) to keep my expectations neutral. Everytime I was excited about (let's say a trip to a city), he'd do something to make me sad. Whether it was cancelling future dates (we met twice a month) or telling me that he wanted to watch sports the éntire next day.
I'd then be 'cheered up' by the citytrip, that he knéw in advance was nót going to be up to my expectations (he'd planned to visit the shops he wanted first.)
But since this was my only chance, I tried to make the most of it.
If, that evening, I wanted to watch a movie that he didn't want, he'd make sure to mention his ex-girlfriends. "Did I ever tell you how I banged Charlize on that couch?"
If I was bewildered and upset, he'd get me a bag of crisps and say; 'Don't worry, I'll watch a similar movie with you love' and I'd feel a bit better that he 'gave up his hate for romantic movies' for me.
One day he got drunk and showed me his agenda. He slurred; "Here..look..I'm such an asshole. I've got planned whén to treat you to ice-cream, so I can get my sportsweekend again. And here I'm going to promise you that we're going to the city, but I'll postpone and take you to a sportsevent instead, where I'll treat you on fries and everything will be fine again."
Safe to say, I vomited in disgust, and 3 months later the 4,5 year relationship was over.

If grooms got to decide on weddings then I think there'd be a klot of zanier ones. Star wars themed, Doctor Who themed, Indian Jones and James Bond themed, probably even hichhiker's guide to the galaxy themed. I'm not sure if that wouldn't be better but the photos would certainly be more interesting.

Maybe I have not got the message correctly, but do I have to infer that marrying couples expect their wedding to be judged "original"? It can't be, can it?

  • @vomitcomet

People seem to think that the longer the bride's dress is the longer the lifespan the marriage will have. It's a miracle they don't get caught between the altar and a radio tower in Dublin.

I can only assume they're getting married. I am both happy for the them and FILLED WITH RAGE AND JEALOUSY.

"It seems like a waste of money, effort and could just be done in a registry office with party afterwards" TehBuhmDiggeee clearly said that she may mark her "wedding" with just a party which would fulfil the ceremony you mentioned.
