I like the way you do a lot with a little. This rebuild ended up being a real good everyday bike. You also don't over invest in your projects, which is something I do repeatedly.
If you adjust your straddle cable on your cantilever brakes to be at 90 degrees to the arm at full pull it will have the most braking power. Also love the stem and crabks. Great find.
The rope on the hub is to clean them. Back in the day used a old leather belt cut down and slotted to put on the hubs, leather would polish them. Old school trick.
We talked about my Klein Pulse Race a while back on your video. I was spring cleaning my shed like three weeks ago and I finally got it out and got the frame completely stripped. Non-drive side bottom bracket plastic cup was stuck and I damaged some threads while taking it off. I’ll have to order a threadless BB. Other than that, the frame and the rims cleaned nicely. I think I’ll just clear coat the frame as is, patina and all. The fork is in amazing condition. The seat post and crank arms are nice and polished again. I used evapo-rust for the first time and that stuff is magic. I’ll keep the Judy fork, crank arms, seatpost/saddle, stem, handlebars and wheels. Everything else was too beat up for my liking and I’ve been looking for new parts. Thanks for the inspiration man!
@RollinRat That’s how I did it, but I accidentally nicked a few threads going too far with the hacksaw but that’s definitely the best method other wise. I managed to just use a standard 73mm internal bearing bottom bracket and I just slowly went back and forth with it, cleaning off any shavings or dust and screwing it further in and out until the non drive side cup went all the way in. The bike came out like new following his method even though it was basically a barn find type of condition. I managed to save a bunch of the parts I thought were done for just by with evaporust, polishing and elbow grease. Other than maintenance and wear parts I replaced, the bike is back to like new stock condition. I’ll keep the suggestion in mind though incase I come across another stripped bb.
If not mentioned, the cord on the hubs is to polish them/keep them clean. Old alloy hubs would often have a piece of tube leather put on them when built (leather from a animal leg). Never seen it on a 90s bike!
Dude, that's a proper classic mtb! Quilt stem forks, that allways bugga! Good job with the razor. You saved that beautiful X.T. Freebaearing headset. A well equipped Fat Chance! Great build!
Those cranks are sweet. My first proper bike with gears was a fluoro orange MTB and I'd love to get another one if I had storage space for an extra bike. Great job dude
Being a super fan of Fat Chance I was super excited to click on your video. If you are unaware. That is a pretty rare bike. Even here in the US. My guess with out knowing the frame # it a early 90s. Wicked is the model. Probably made about 2000 of them. I have a mint 89 Wicked.
Wow that is super cool! I didn’t know that. I knew they were rare in Australia because I never see them around! I will take a look at the model tomorrow!! Thank you
I forgot to also say I bought mine new in 89. Yes. I'm old. I still do ride it. Unsure if you know. They were all hand made and painted in a very small shop just outside Boston Massachusetts. They did make there own forks but I don't think yours is.
I believe what you have is number 1651 of 1989 the W is for wicked. Sold as frame sets so I'm sure a bike shop chose the components. But could have been sold in 1990
Suntour, old school gear! That Cook Bros stem is trippy, never seen one of those before. I have an old Kuwahara that is Suntour and Sugino, figure it's about '88 or so, friction shifters like this.
@@garysprojects I did I watched every minute of the video like I said I just love what you are doing keeping these old bikes on the road and looking good 👍🏾 👌
Thanks man I actually did exactly the same thing before I found out about Evaporust. I think if you are just doing one bike vinegar is fine, but when you get addicted and do more , Evaporust is good 😂😂
I love vintage mountain bikes. I have an '83 Schwinn High Sierra that had full Deore group. It was a yellow with gold/copper parts. I ditched the biopace for a crank from a 90s/00s Trek or Canondale. I redid the cockpit with the bars and stem from my old Lotus Pegasus, and the deore thumbies. I did replace it's brake levers with these nice 3way adj Origin8 shortpulls. I wanted to keep the bike rather vintage and same group, but both mechs broke last year, now the cassette(original) is too worn out. I still kick myself for not keeping the hub from the original rear wheel- sealed bearing hi flange.
So so sad that Suntour have stopped making those parts , they were just amazing ...but as we all know the bicycle market is tough . Nice rebuild btw , just be carefull with those rims , if a stone is in the breakpad and cut a groove into the side these rims are known to break easy because they are pretty hard anodized. Have fun !

I love those long videos man haha, To superclean those bearings you can use some isopropyl alcohol or a little of gas, it will melt the old grease and grime, then you can spin them a little and them regrease, they will work as new. I do that on my skateboard bearings and they work like new after that. Maybe even better.
Damn good tip! Need to try that next time! Haha yeah I tried to clean my skateboard bearings the other day, but I think the bearings are actually shot because they feel rough, guess that’s what happens when u run shields popped! 😂
@@garysprojects I just so happened to clean my bearings yesterday. I'd recommend letting them sit in your fav solvent for several hours, and then swish them around a fair bit to agitate and loosen any muck. I've found that if you let them just sit in solvent, some grime eventually settles in the inner races even after it's come off the bearing!
@@garysprojects Popped shields doesnt matter I think. At least that is my experience. The muck inside gets pushed out, when you dont have shields on. Also for skate bearings, after you clean them with IPA, put one drop of bike chain oil or something like that (I use sewing machine oil and it works wonders). Never use grease to 608Z bearings haha. I tried the hard way 😀Skate bearing always get destoryed when your ball races crack. They are usually plastic and until they are good, the balls will last forever.

I'm curious what storage solutions you have. I live in an apartment and am keen to get tooling around as well, but space is always an issue jajaj. Cheers 💪🏽✨🚵🏽♀️
Thanks homie I appreciate that! I usually sell them when I have too many haha. Yeah storage can be a pain when living in an apartment, some bikes I keep inside and some I keep in storage, just make sure you Lock em up good. Yeah not too much space to work on the balcony but I actually don’t mind because of the convenience!
I like all your videos mate but I’m afraid to say I don’t understand why you “cleaned up” the chain as the grease that make it sticky is put on it from the factory for a reason which is lubricate and protect the chain. That bike is awesome, I started mountain biking in 1990 and Fat Chance was one of the bikes I red about on Mountain Bike Action, too bad money was tight for me back then. BTW I had a set of those CB cranks and I still regret I sold them.
Cheers man! Thanks for watching my vids! the reason why I remove the protective grease is because it’s just that! It’s used by the factory only to protect the chain for storage & transport. If I were to leave it on it all the dirt and grim would stick to the chain from the first ride. The factory grease is also thicker where chain lube is a thinner, hope that helps you understand why. Cheers man the bike is super fun! Yeah I heard that the cb cranks are quite sought after , so probably hang onto them!! Thank you !
Ahh that would def take up the slack, although I have the same cage size on 2 bikes , with the same gearing setup and it wasn’t an issue, I think the chain could be too long, maybe I’ll try shorten the chain one link as I don’t have a spare long cage ! Cheers
With the right tools (I used a simple bike tool kit ruclips.net/user/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L that you can strap to the bike) it's simple to assemble. As a 270lb guy looking for a way to get more exercise that's easy on my feet I have been impressed by this bike. The tires ship with air in the tires, but before you ride you need to pump them up som more, but once you do you can ride with confidence. You'll definitely want to replace the seat if you're going to ride for any real distance, but that's the case with most bikes. I'm loving it and it has given me a hobby from my youth back.
nice build, just wanted to clear one thing up where you said at the drill press , you can wear googles or a mask and can wear gloves. Never ever wear gloves at a drillpress or similar things. trust me never do that
@@garysprojects really like your rebuilds, i also flip bikes and restore them. and if you have some money in the backhand i can really really recommend a ultrasonic cleaner. after i bought one, my oh my, it saves so much time and cleans way better sometimes then what i could with hands.
I hate those keyed washers in old threaded headsets. It's a terrible design and it isn't even needed on headsets that have an adjustable race with wrench flats like yours does, because you can get a wrench on both the adjustable race and the jam nut at the same time. They are only needed on headsets with an adjustable race that only has knurling rather than wrench flats so that you can [in theory] tighten the jam nut without the adjustable race tightening with it, but even then they don't do their intended job well because the tab is tiny and usually fits sloppily in the groove, so they often end up damaging the steerer tube threads when the tab twists out of the groove. In the case of headsets that have an adjustable race that I can get a wrench on, I file the little tab off the inside of those keyed washers to make them into a regular washer/spacer so that they can't ever damage the fork's threads again.

oh man, you were supposed to shoot degreaser into the bb bearings and brake cleaner after and then put grease. But otherwise bodacious build!!!!!!!
Cheers man!! Yeah I as afraid if I put degreaser in it would be hard to get out 🤷🏻 since the bearings was in the frame, oh well done now 😂
Get yourself an ultrasonic cleaner, bro! They're a timesaver!
Haha How long do they take ?
You were having chain length issues because you have a short cage rear derailleur. Get an SGS long cage and it'll take up the slack
Ahh that would def take up the slack, although I have the same cage size on 2 bikes , with the same gearing setup and it wasn’t an issue, I think the chain could be too long, maybe I’ll try shorten the chain one link as I don’t have a spare long cage ! Cheers
@@garysprojects with the same chainrings combo's too? Those cook brother rings are big
Yeah the Marin was 50 I think , I need to double check !
Hey man, what camera and what video editing software did you use to put this together?
I use my phone for all filming (iPhone XS max) and Adobe premiere to edit , cheers!
Awsome
Cheers!
Frame size?
M-L has a long toptube 58-60 cm
Yes
nice build, just wanted to clear one thing up where you said at the drill press , you can wear googles or a mask and can wear gloves. Never ever wear gloves at a drillpress or similar things. trust me never do that
Cheers mate , I just looked it up good to know. For anyone reading - gloves should not be worn with rotating machines incase they get caught
@@garysprojects really like your rebuilds, i also flip bikes and restore them. and if you have some money in the backhand i can really really recommend a ultrasonic cleaner. after i bought one, my oh my, it saves so much time and cleans way better sometimes then what i could with hands.
Dang thank you mate , I have to look into that !
Yeassss!!! I actually did that in the project I’m working on now! Really serves no purpose like you said ! Better to keep the threads protected 👍👍👍
WHITE CABLE - WHITE STITCHING
Hahaha TRUE ! gotta represent 🦾
next time that you need to polish a part like this Bell, try to use somente tooth paste with the brush
Cheers man! I need to find a place to put it on the bike 😂
I will literally trade you two bikes for that…. 1980s bianchi grizzly and a 2000 specialized s works full suspension
Hahah cheers man not for sale right now but thank you
That stem is ❗️NSANE!😳🤨. I'd go with a 7000 series aluminum Thomson Elite or Masterpiece stem🤘🤘😏. Or better yet, a 5Dev 6/4 Titanium stem👍👍😁. 5Dev Titanium stems are Ridiculously expensive. I think almost
💰500.00🍁😭lol. And their Beautiful 6/4 Titanium 1 piece cranks are 💰💰2,999.00🍁😖🤯
Hahah yeah they make some nice stuff , outta my budget though 🤣🤣😭😭
@garysprojects I hear ya! I called a place out in BC, asking why the 5Dev 1 piece 6/4 Titanium cranks were almost
💰💰3,000.00🍁. They're "only"
💰1,500.00 US. Their also very cool looking 7075 aluminum cranks are rather expensive; costing $800.00 US. Your channel is cool. I learned of it on my home version of RUclips 🤘🤘
para que le rocia con insecticida?
because there are bugs inside when you buy bikes from australia :D
How are you not sponsored by WD40 😢
probably not worth it for them 😂
Good video but not a fan of the insecticide
Cheers man !
Dude, you should be sponsored by WD40 as much as you promote their product in your videos.
Hahaha cheers one day maybe
I literally saw a spider crawling in your hair. Arachnophobia much?
😂😂 time stamp please
