  • Mount Your Antennas, Mount Your Radio, we can Mount it all with the Super Clamp! (end of infomercial)
    (Where possible, any links provided are affiliate links):
    I found this cool Mount / Clamp at goodwill and knew it had a valuable use with ham radio! I WILL be utilizing this on a boat this summer with a vertical antenna!
    Known as the super clamp and originally used for photography and video, the super clamp utilizes a 10mm threaded stud, which could be used with antennas like the JPC 12 (amzn.to/3SYNFfW), telescoping antennas and more!
    This video discusses possible deployment of the Super Clamp, How I got it for 1.49$, and reasoning why I think it will gain popularity!
    Links to similar super clamps (In the video I discuss why I am linking similar clamps). Neither of these super clamps appear to have the m10 studs already applied. Please let me know if you know the mount I have found

    I use M10 threaded antennas from aliexpress when I am not using the JPC12 - I aquired them for 18 bucks on Aliexpress and this video will show you a review and provdide a link: • BD7IBI Telescoping ant... They were about 20 bucks on aliexpress and have held up okay, given the price.
    Some people ask about the adapters from m10 to 3/8 - I used ones from aliexpress: 2PCS/20PCS M10 Female To 3/8 24 Male Screw Mount Adapter Aluminium Alloy For V Antenna - $8.74 for 2 - www.aliexpress.us/item/325680...
    I have not tried these ones from Amazon: amzn.to/4bTEmqe
    Nor have I tried this one from adorama - www.adorama.com/fpxcp06k2.htm...

    Another Goodwill bargain you'll often find are lighting tripods used by photographers. They're well-made and often extend up 10-feet to get an antenna out of the clutter. I picked up two, worth about $100 at Goodwill for $10 each.

    • @HAMRADIODUDE
      @HAMRADIODUDE  4 месяца назад

      Absolutely! I have aquired a surplus of those as well. Even if it is just for using the tripod to hold a crappie pole, which holds a wire antenna... it works!

    Nice find and a good solution. I've used a Workman clamp mount with my WRC and radials coming off the picnic table and that setup works just fine. Clamp mounts can definitely come in handy for certain situations.

    I'm in a wheelchair, and I picked up a couple of different tripods from second-hand stores for portable work with mag-loops and verticals. Second-hand stores are great for finding good, cheap ham accessories. My mag-loops are homebrew, and free-standing on the tripods. They are quick and easy to set up in parks, and take up essentially no space on the ground. For the verticals I set up in places where kids and dogs aren't around I use a lightweight telescoping one with a homebrew loading coil that I tap for resonance with an alligator clip jumper, (I don't bother with commercial loading coils costing hundreds of dollars. That's insane. Electrons and photons are not impressed with price. Mine wound on an old pool noodle has higher Q, lower loss,) and I like to put out a few quarter-wave radials for each band I'll be trying. Down-sloping radials improve the match, but straight out, down-sloping, or random directions for radials makes little difference with radiation pattern when it comes to most contacts. A dB or so of lose due to the radiation pattern may be the difference between making 10 contacts instead of 11, (or it may be the difference between making 11 instead of 10, since an uneven radiation pattern may mean a weaker interfering signal and a stronger signal in the direction of that 1 weak station you're trying to pull in.) That's why I don't bother with setting up for a uniform radiation pattern when I'm doing a portable set-up. Being in a wheelchair I'm lazy about making things look pretty. Besides, making a bunch of contacts with a sloppy looking setup beats not setting up at all and making none. Of course, I'm not a contester, for whom numbers matter. I don't log SOTA or POTA. I don't log any of my contacts. I need no certificates, no awards. I just set up on nice days and go fishing in the airwaves. A few years ago, some ham friends gave me a plaque that says, "To The World's Greatest Elmer." No certificate will ever come close to that, no matter how many I might get. I just like to do a little experimenting, and a little chatting with interesting people from around the state, or around the world.

    Very nice find from Goodwill. Great info for the video!!! I’m surprised that the ham that had the issue with putting things into the ground or into trees (which now cannot be done at any state wildlife area or national refuge in VA, or we can lose those POTA entities from a single violation) didn’t think of a Wolf River Coil and their numerous variants… They just sit ON the ground, which is a great alternative. There’s also mag mounts for cars (and grills I’m starting to see) where other verticals can be run (including the mighty ham stick). Plus there are a few other clamps out there that work too.
    I’ve always erred on the side of caution and used a standing vertical (Buddistick Pro) or ham sticks (& a MPAS 2.0 as a vertical for the first few 7-8 months of my POTA activities) & mag mount on top of my SUV. But it’s a learning process of what works, knowing what’s available & what one can purchase.
    Again, great find & video! 73!

    My SuperAntenna clone came with a piece of bar stack and a C-clamp to clamp to tables and such. Similar but will still cost more than that clamp you found.

    Hey question, something maybe for a video, I see several videos where people show a radio showing initial harmonic spikes which smooth down after some seconds. However it’s not well explained why and why it’s not a problem !!!

  • @petersichel9934
    @petersichel9934 4 месяца назад

    Re ground plane efficiency: elevated radials need to be resonant. For radials on the ground the ideal is to have 4 wave lengths of wire on the ground. For a 20m vertical, that means about 250’ of radial wire on the ground. The exact length vs number is less important than having enough wire on the ground for efficient coupling. A faraday cloth on the ground should work well, on a table? My guess is not nearly as well. A dipole has a radiation resistance of around 72 ohms, a quarter wave vertical is around half that at 35 ohms. A shortened vertical with a loading coil could be half of that. The ratio of Radiation Resistance to ground losses largely determines the antenna efficiency. Poor performing verticals abound, but once you understand the concept, it’s not hard to setup a good one that gets out.

    You can get a M10 to 3/8-24 thread adapter at a good price and typically the next day from McMaster-Carr. It is part #92499A793. They're a major industrial supplier, so that should have almost any other connection option or industrial material you need. Even though my order was small, they were most helpful.

      If it's government, it very well will make little to no sense. I generally minimize the amount of stakes I use. Many of the activations I do I'm the one hiking the equipment in.

      @@HAMRADIODUDE I use a clamp by a different name and work the HF bands with 100 watts on SSB all day long and I'm only on the 2nd floor with a vertical antenna tilted a slight off of 90 degree angle so my neighbors above me can't touch the antenna.
