Great video guys. I lived in blaxland for 28 years I'm 35 and have lived in the blue mountains my whole life. I love it. Could tell you alot of history over the past 35 years. Was a great place to grow up
Glad you guys turned back and discovered the cutting for proper alignment after the western portal on the northern side of Knapsack creek, nice little surprise that me and the mrs discovered in our research and exploration approximately 20yrs ago from study of steam era photos 👍🏻
Very interesting. As an ex Mountains resident in my teen years I always heard about the tunnel, the mushroom farm and the zigzag. Now resident in WA (Perth region) I have ridden my mountain bike to both portals to explore whilst visiting family in and around the mountains. Nothing much has changed in the several times I have visited, everything just sitting there un-used. Such a shame as this tunnel could be developed into a great walking and cycling route for tourism, just like the Swan View tunnel on the eastern fringes of Perth was. Come on Blue Mountains council or NSW Department of Recreation/Sport/Tourism, just do it. What a boon it would be.
I grew up in May St Glenbrook just up from the Tunnel in the 60s. The was another Rail cutting on the other side of the Great Western Highway just up from the tunnel that was used as a Rubbish Tip and later filled in for housing I think. I think it pre dates the Tunnel.
You were lucky you didn't get booked you made an illegal right turn off the highway coppers love that spot to catch people at the end of the track pass the tunnel there used to be Glenbrook sewage treatment plant also it is of interest the east end of the tunnel there is a good walking track down to the Lapstone water tower through a long cutting
Funny you say that. I did not realise that there was no right turn until I was editing the video. Not very observant of me was it? We went twice and the second time I turned into Barnet Street (to the football club), turned and drove back. I believe we walked the cutting when we made our video on the Lapstone Zigzag.
Thank you for a well researched and very interesting documentary. I found it by accident but it has won you another subscription. More please. Keep up the great work guys.
I visit the tunnel regularly and have known about it for a while now, though I am not sure what the cutout ot the side is, I'm pretty sure though that it is the path of the top of the lapstone zig zag
The area around the eastern entrance is safe as the tunnel is bricked up, so no one can get in. The western entrance (actually the northwestern) is fenced off with "No entry signs" We entered through the gate, as you saw in the video, as it was not chained tightly. However, on a second visit the chain had been tightened. The tunnel entrance is closed by a corrugated iron wall. It is damaged but we did not try to squeeze in as we did not have torches. The land is owned by State Rail and the Local Council is looking after it.
@@markrawson7127 It was reported in the Blue Mountains Gazette on the 19th May, 2019 that a group of Glenbrook residents are pushing to have the disused Lapstone Deviation Tunnel opened up to become a tourist and cycling destination, connecting the Lower Mountains to Penrith. The Blue Mountains Cycling Safety Forum and Western Sydney Mountain Bike Club have joined the community campaign to open the tunnel.
"Editored". Should it not be Edited? interesting video though. I am pretty sure my dad took some of us to this location many years ago. He loves his rail history. I somehow remember it differently though.
Is there asbestos in the tunnel? Another video on RUclips shows someone entering from the western end and filming inside. He makes a comment about asbestos in the tunnel and is wearing a face mask.
We did not enter the railway tunnel. It was securely locked. Maybe they were doing an inspection as there are people who want the tunnel opened to the public.
It’s a shame you find it necessary to drive in the right lane constantly. What ever happened to “Keep Left Unless Overtaking”????? Poor form displaying this bad driving for all the world to see on film! Spoils an otherwise good video.

Thankyou for this history lesson. I very much enjoyed it.
We did part of this walk today and now know that we passed the eastern tunnel! Thanks for sharing. Great video.
Thanks for the video. My brother worked at the mushroom farm there many years ago and I only now realise where it was. Thank you.

Thanks for taking the time to make this. I grew up with a print of the Fires On painting in our home, it's great to see the history behind it.
Cheers.
The latest news the tunnel and old rail bed are going to open to a walking/ bike track connecting the Nepean River track through to Glenbrook shops
Any idea when ? I will continue to bring my mountain bike over from the west on the off-chance that it has happened.
This should be cleaned into.a rail trail for public use including the Lapstone zig zag. Great history abandoned on Penrith door step.
Ironic .
Environmental damage. Right next door was the sewage works, that pumped into the creek.

Thanks David. Glad you liked it. We're in the process of recording the Documentary "The Nepean" . See our day-by-day "making of" videos.
The damn lies and cover ups from the ppl we elect is sickening thank you so much for your investigative passion

Too long. I ran out of data.

Hard to make a right turn from the left lane.
