I never knew Baepsae has this underlying meaning. Sure translation helps but thanks to DKDKTV the sociocultural context in the song surfaced. I bet even some Koreans were passive about the song’s message.

Super Asel there are actually a lot of army translators (esp on tumblr) who interprets any socio-political songs bts has (n.o, bapsae, am i wrong, etc.) or even just explaining the references and wordplays of their ever creative cypher series, it opened my eyes rlly and made me love bts even more. and it's cute how it shows that bts is not the only ones who are smart but also armys who understood everything they laid out

I've always felt a bit sad bc I know a lot of bts songs that I love have so many hidden nuances that don't make sense since I don't speak Korean and understand it within the context of Korean culture. Same here in America. There's a constant struggle between baby boomers and millenials. They are always saying, "When I was your age I had a house and etc. " A lot of them just refuse to acknowledge that times are different.
I recently did an internship for salary that didn't even cover my rent (and I went to a foreign country for it) and I taught my boss more than he taught me, that's sum bullshit

Yes, Dope is all about them bragging how they've worked hard to get where they are and that they now have the right to call themselves dope. And in the last verse, they basically get back at the fact that they had to work even harder due to the economic and social injustice put on their generation.

This song is so on point.. this is not only happening in Korean but i guess everywhere as well. Especially in India there are lack of jobs and more than 70% Youth. No matter what stream you choose you end up in IT company, with no hope of career change bc there is so much struggle, competition for employment once you lose the job its hard to get another. But our parents never understand us they still want us to do engineering, MBA. When we cant get what they ask us they call us lazy, no determination or motivation.

I just realised a beautiful irony in Baepsae. People in power and with a lot of priveledge call people "baepsae" "try hard" with the connotation of "no matter how hard you try, you will always fail" and at the same time, tell them to try harder, work harder, and that you aren't trying hard enough. It is like the horse chasing the carrot, it is always kept out of reach no matter how hard you try.

The gold spoon teacher in the lyric of Baepsae addresses Park Geunhye who was the president when Baepsae was released and Nooooryuk is her way to emphasize Noryuk in her presidential address as if she had wanted to teach people. It looked quite cringy and many young people started mimicking her since then.

Same is happening here in the states. My daughter respectfully "schooled" her baby boomer history teacher on the realistic costs of college nowadays as compared to when he went to school. He was humble enough to look up the cost to go to college today as compared to when he could "work part-time and pay for school along with the basic necessities of life." He thought offering free/affordable college education was the result of kids being too lazy to work and go to school. He admitted he was wrong.

Korean culture is so rich with history and meaning but I’m trying to learn and BTS is making it difficult bc now that I know Korean words have different meaning depending on how you use them and how you say them I’m like 😭😭😭 but I’ll deal with it bc that’s probably how non-English speaking people feel about us when we are over here using slang and they are just as confused 😂😂

I’m watching this video in 2021 and I’ve noticed that up till now everyone omitted the dance choreo meaning as well. It’s not just a sexy hip movement. It’s suppose to reinforce the song message-it’s basically “f.ck you” in dance interpretation. Not to mention that the rest of choreo reinforces other lines too. The struggles of walking against the wind, bent backs and so on. Pure masterpiece all in all.

Thank you for making this. It's really an informative video explaining the political statements about the economical & generational disparities experienced by the younger generations in S. Korea (which is very much felt in younger generations in the U.S., especially by Millennials in relation to Baby Boomers as well). Not only are BTS talented but their song lyrics are often meaningful & relevant.

it's insane how it appears that what millenials vs boomers experiences are so similar across countries. we see boomers in multiple countries enjoy a good economic environment and treating millenials today as if that is still the case for us.
Wanted to give BTS ' new songs a pass. But after listening to yours and David's interpretation of their music Ive gone back to music again with a new perspective. Sad that we're not leaving anything for the coming generations. No doubt the suicide rates are so high.

I know this is a year ago, but i just saw this comment and wanted to tell you that Korea has the one of the highest rates of suicide (especially in youth) in the world for the past 5-ish amount of years? I know some people who haven't been able to get a real job for the past 3 years despite having many licenses and a university degree, part-time work experience, etc. So, yeah. Its pretty fucking bad and really sad.
And 3 years later we're in a situation even worse than before haha, there's this saying in my country that goes more or less like this in english "you can always get deeper when you think you've reached rock bottom" and unfortunately it really is the case, if we're already the generation of hopelessness i can only say i pity the ones coming after us because i have no clue how they're gonna live.

However, because BTS is NOW my proof that the world is changing... and through the infusion power of youth, beauty, laughter, brotherhood, intimacy, kindness, courage, sincerity, transparency, voice, art, music, lyrics, song and dance... there is a new LIGHT guiding us. Like J-Hope's name and mantra indicates... I now have proof of global change and hope for our future. I have hope for the young on this planet. I have hope for humanity.... because BTS and ARMY exists, have shown up and have become a global force.

I understood from the general translations ARMYs work so hard to make what they were getting at. I mean, the parenthetical name “silver spoon” helps a lot. But I didn’t know how very similar Korea’s current economic struggle was to the issues in the US. Young people here can definitely relate. It sure is well-known among fans that BTS often addresses socio-political issues, however, looking at literal translations, international fans usually only get it to a certain extent, missing out on many profound metaphors and meanings due to the lack of equivalents in the English language. I feel like I’ve come to understand their songs on a much deeper level now, both 뱁새 and 땡... I really hope to see more of it, this really just made my day! Again, thank you so much!
This is almost scary, that these things that occur in the song and in Korea are the exact same things that I experience in Hungary. Like... We are on the opposite sides of Earth and yet these problems are familiar and relatable? I... I'm shook, I kind of thought that my country is just too messed up that's why our generation has zero hope. I'm not sure if it's encouraging or frightening that others face the same problems, but it is certainly interesting and enlightening.
